Desiree is my niece. I was 15 years old at the time when this tragedy struck. Losing my sister, my brother-in-law, and my 5 year old niece all at the same time was devastating to say the least. Desiree shared the initial podcast with me and I was excited to hear about the reunion. Watching this video brought me to tears. Brought back a lot of memories and emotions. I didn't realize Desiree remembered so many details. I never asked to spare her any pain of reliving that horrific time in her life. Hearing how my sister and the others passed played so differently in my head all these years due to the limited information we had. I have no doubt God steered these wonderful captains in her direction so she would survive. He had and has a purpose for her life. She is a special woman, wonderful mommy, and a great wife. I'm so proud of her and proud to call her my niece. Love you to pieces Des.

I could see that this podcast brought some closure to the captains and Desirae. And it sounds like it help to answer some questions for you also. I agree with you that God stood those captains toward her vessel. It had to be divine intervention.Once again, thank you so very much for leaving such wonderful comments. I hope that we can all get together sometime in the very near future.

Hi Desiree, I’ve seen you posting on some comments here so if you happen to see this message I’m so sorry this happened to you. Your bravery has touched me so much! What you had to endure, what you had to see happen around you. So young and you were put into such a situation that would be terrifying and heart wrenching for even an adult. Trying to save your uncle at 9 years old? Makes me sick to even think about it. To have to tie your relatives to the boat, and describing your mother’s passing tied me and my wife up into knots. The despair you must have felt when you swam away from the last remnant of safety from that boat into open water and nothingness. Breaks mine and everyone else’s heart to imagine that feeling. NO ONE deserves this to happen to them, much less an innocent child that wanted nothing but a normal childhood with parents and to feel safe. That was robbed from you and I’m so saddened by that. The times you must spent alone afterward wondering why this happened to you. Forced to grow up and be brave when you had every right in the world to be scared out of your wits if need be! You deserved to have your mother there to comfort you during that time, not to have to bury her. My heart hurts for you.
What a bittersweet rescue this must have been for your little self. How your life must have changed so drastically from that moment on. I can tell it’s still so painful for you too. You must have to tuck something like that away and not get it out unless you have to. I hope this reunion did help heal your heart a little.
I’m so happy you seem to have your life pieced back together as much as you can. Stay strong angel, with your bright smile! if there’s anyone that’s supposed to be alive and with a purpose it’s you!!! Thoughts and prayers from Tennessee.
    P.S.
Your story touched me so much I played this for my sister and her husband on the way to vacation. There we were, a truckload of adults in tears driving down the road listening to you reveal who you were to these guys! Such a sweet moment. There is no replacement for what you’ve lost, but I hope there’s a part of your heart that’s mending knowing you’ve touched so many people’s lives with your story. It’s your story girl! You lived this and made it out on the other side. No one else can say that:

Please believe I would give anything to have the right words to say to you that would actually help. That’s like hoping a drop of water puts out a fire.
Keep moving forward, look to the family you’ve made when times get tough. Look at the joy you bring to the people around you. The life you created! That’s a direct slap in the face of the situation that tried to rob you from this world!
Things happen to people that don’t deserve it, and you got one of the most unfair doses of that I’ve ever seen. You’ve paid a whole lifetime of sadness dues in one day.
You deserve nothing now but true peace and happiness. Your family knows you loved them and they loved you. It’s ok to not be sad about them if you ever catch yourself in the act of doing so.
It’s ok to let some of that pain go if you ever get the chance to. Can that ever be done? I’ll never know but I hope you can find a way. If there’s someone who can it’s you. A survivor in every sense of the word. Never ever feel guilty about enjoying your life!
P.S. if talking about it helps then i hope you do so.

Keeping it real I just have to say, Desiree is a complete badass of a person and woman. What kind of obstacle could anyone ever challenge her with that she wouldn’t just shrug off and annihilate? Her son is destined to be a strong man.
