  • Swimming has incredible health benefits except for two:
    1- Building stronger bones and
    2- Building strength in certain parts of the body.
    According to Wolff’s Law, in the healthy population, bone usually responds to stress by increasing its mass and Bone Mineral Density.
    In water and in space there isn’t a lot of stress to the bones. However, out of all the studies, none of them concluded that swimming negatively affected bone mass or mineral density when compared to the controlled groups.
    So why do Doctors love recommending swimming to elderly people who usually have low bone density as well?

    Solid video, but there are a lot of red flags for causation vs correlation.
    Example: flat footedness. I’m not gonna question that swimming might cause that, but there’s a LOT of ppl who were flat footed before swimming, and are drawn to the sport bc it hurts less than running sports. Same is with bone density. Yes, swimming might not be great for that, but a lot of ppl choose swimming bc they can float well - which is in part due to bone density. This is very commonly known among competitive swimmers

      That’s true! I have a flat foot and a chronic inflammation up to my knee one the same side. Swimming is the only sport where I can get my heartbeat up without putting further strain and pain on these areas. The water resistant actually helps stretching the area (where Front foot goes becomes leg, I don’t know what it’s called lol) which is usually something I need to do manually exercises for, but not when swimming.

    the only downside for swimming for me is I easily have dry skin and hair, and back acne but other than that it keeps me fit so

      Damnn no wonder I started having back acne then. I only started having back acne after spending 4 to 5 days swimming per week while training for my university competitions. And I still have it now.. it won't go away

    One should always do a variety of sports and exercises to stimulate all the bones and muscles. I'm 70, I swim twice a week, walk with weights twice a week and cycle twice a week.

    I like the honesty of this video. It teaches us what we should watch out for, because they care. It's a good idea to do multiple sports in order to avoid overusing the same muscles. Even within swimming, to do multiple strokes instead of just freestyle.

      @@sastashroud7646 I learnt to swim when I was 54, swam for a year then stopped. Started swimming again at 62 in May of this year 2022. Love it and try to go a few days a week but I'm always knackered by the time I get home.
      This time round the chlorine has given me a rash my around my neck, chest and under my breasts and i just started using sudocrem last weekend which is healing it a little but now the areas I've put the sudocrem on has become very dry. Read somewhere to use vaseline on these sensitive areas before going into the pool even asked the Chemist and he also mentioned the use of vaseline on these areas🇬🇧🇯🇲

      @@BlackMan614 Swimming is nothing compared to soccer. I started swimming so I could keep fit while injured. I've gotten so many injuries playing soccer that I've become a decent swimmer. Been at it 20 years and can't recall a proper injury. It's been a god send.

    Very nice video.
    I am making some To Do' put of this:
    1) Bones: Go do some dryland calisthenics. Pushups, Pullups and Squats are all i need to get started. I'll incorporate some weight and resistance bands later.
    2) Shoulders: Doing external shoulder strenthening is easy to do at home without equipment and everybody should be doing it anyways (no matter if they swim, play tennis or just work in an office). The channel FitnessFAQ has demonstrated how to do this: Its called the Y-W-A Workout (video: bulletproof shoulders). I am doing it every other day and my shoulders and scapula have become much stronger in external rotation.
    3) Ankle: Tibilas Raises and Calf Raises while stretching my ankles.

    For elderly, it is all about painful joints. Swimming tones muscles, increases breathing and does not pound joints.

    I'm 74 and started to have trouble with my gluteus when biking too much for decades. I decided to go swimming. I jumped into butterflies for the first time in my life. I quickly understood that one has to be careful with his shoulders, especially in backstrokes. I now use my spine and hips to slide thru the water and push the water underneath with my arms. It works! My shoulders look strong and healthy, but I noticed several parts of my body didn't use their muscles. To compensate I weightlift and row. I used to dance a lot before Covid. Now I won't as I noticed it could hurt my feet.
    LESSON: As one gets older, one has to listen to his skeleton, muscles, stomach, and intestines. I agree with this video which confirms my instinct about sports that I had practiced all my life. (I'm a former gymnast.)

    Kids who swim for years, can swim for their lifetimes, but severely struggle doing any other sport or basic recreation. Focus on elite athletic performances is a myopic athlete development model.

    So paradoxically, swimmers with imperfect technique may end up building stronger bones because we encounter more resistance with, for example, our old-fashioned breaststroke kick? Maybe this is something to think about for those of us who aren't racing but just want to stay fit enjoyably.

      There may be some truth to this, when I was a young boy and didn't know how to swim properly, I would spend all day in the river playing river tag with friends, and i swam like a dog, and I had like twice as much strength as most of my friends.

      Even though you might encounter slighly more resistance, you are still in the water so this doesn't make a big difference compare to a sport with high impacts on the ground.
      About the muscle strength i don't think that is plays a huge role as in both cases you are using all your strength to swim, wether your technique is good or bad.

    Swimming mainly trains your triceps, lats and core.It's definetly a good idea to have a balanced lifting program on the side aswel.

    Well I got a DEXA scan and my bone density T-score is 1.8. Don't think swimming will affect that so much

    I don’t think this is a disadvantage of swimming, no form of exercise helps with everything.
    That’s why unless you compete in a sport (and in most cases even then, just to a lesser extent) varying your training is the best option for overall fitness and health.

    Makes sense: underdeveloped tibialis anterior - I have a collapsed arch. I moved from competitive swimming to long distance running and have been suffering shin splints for a very long time.
    This seems like a completely logical explanation.

    Strong calf muscles cannot cause flat feet in swimmers.❌ When swimming freestyle, backstroke, butterfly, our toes are always pulled back, which is the reason why swimmers have a high lift of the foot. High instep is also a problem (that's why we strengthen the dorsiflexions), but this is the opposite of flatfoot, not flatfoot itself.

      Stretch before and after swimming😀
      Or maybe you're doing the wrong technique 😃
      Or maybe you have a small injury😃
      Advice: stretch before and after swimming and try to swim with the right technique
      You can also get stretch equipment

    My combination in my "sporty" days was swimming (3km 3 times a week) and Squash. I guess I had it covered :)
    More seriously - you always have to compare to the alternatives and their respective risks. For example many, who were running throughout their lives end up needing hip and knee prosthesis in their late 40s or early 50s. Even a slight imperfection in skeletal structure (e.g. 1 leg slightly shorter) will eventually lead to wear and tear with any high impact activities maintained over many years.
    So, your conclusion of this video should not be to replace swimming with something even more detrimental. One good choice is to not overdo a single form of sports and instead switch it up and change sports every once in a while, if your goal is to improve and maintain your health.

    Personally the disadvantages to being a swimmer is bad teeth (yes chlorine is really bad for your teeth), I’ve had a stye infection from gross pools and bad skin and hair.
    Nonetheless the advantages are wayyyyyy bigger than the disadvantages

    This video is pretty pointless, everything said is absolutely true but doesn't really present anything worthwhile. All sports lack the exercise of certain muscles and are prone to working certain muscles more. It's the same with any exercise, if the argument is you cannot only swim to gain muscle mass then yes, duh. You cant only do bicep curls to get huge...

    You're asking me to believe that going swimming for 1 hour a day will make me lose bone mass similar to people in space right now.. sorry you're full of it. For any of that to ACTUALLY matter you'd have to basically slither around allday until you get into a pool. Sorry I just don't believe you.. I'm not saying this is wrong, just more theoretical... if you are someone losing bone mass from swimming then you literally do nothing when you get out of a pool, I mean damn you probably are just leaving in a wheel chair
