      I love that you mention your camera... My big beef is that there is yet to be a publicly recognized Spectrum and we are also labeled blind, along with the organization's supposedly in place to support the vi Spectrum folks..... cameras actually open up possibilities like never before!

    • @JuanAlcazar
      @JuanAlcazar 6 лет назад +1

      I think that's the tricky part of it all. It definitely is a spectrum and the fact that no two VI people see exactly the same makes it even trickier to form a spectrum label.

    Totally with you on #1! I think the next time someone tells me that I’m lucky I couldn’t drive, I’m going to reply with “Wow, thank you for volunteering to be my chauffeur! I need to go grocery shopping this afternoon, so just pick me up at 2 o’clock, and then tomorrow I have a dentist appointment at 10 AM, so I’ll be waiting for you at 9:45.“
    One that’s at the top of my personal list is “Can’t you just get stronger glasses or have surgery?” Oh, gee, wow, I NEVER would have thought of that! And to think, I’ve been dealing with this my whole life! I’m so happy you came along and made this suggestion because this just never occurred to me, my parents or the dozens of doctors I’ve seen in my lifetime!! 🤣

      I can understand where you're coming from. The only positive thing about us not being able to drive is not having to pay car ensurance, gas money, repares, or even buy a car, although I do know some visually impaired people who own a car but just don't drive it. But in return we either have to take Uber or Lyft which is vry expensive, or have to take paratransit busses that often suck, at least here in Cleveland they do. So it's a give and take.

    Thank you so much for your videos.
    My Mom has RP and is struggling to come to terms with it. She’s staying with me whilst on lockdown. She normally lives independently in her own flat
    She said earlier , I don’t know why I say I’m watching the tv because I can’t see a thing . I told her that it’s a figure of speech and that I’m sure most blind people say , I’m watching a movie or the news.

      The crazy thing is that even people who have been around blind people for decades, like otherwise awesome and supportive parents, still make this mistake! I think that, in my case, it's because I do have some useable vision and sometimes they just forget.

Now, I'm visually impaired and my daughter has generalized anxiety disorder so all of this was a struggle for both of us. When we asked the woman in the office how to get to the art building, she said "there will be a group of kids heading there. Just follow them". What? Lol there are a good 1,200 kids on campus. She gave us these directions not once but again the next day. So frustrating!

One time I was in a disability’s office and approached the receptionist with my cane and asked her where the restrooms were. Since I live alone and therefore independently, and don’t have a lot of other sighted people around me going to appointments I must advocate for myself. Every once in a while, I will have a medical driver bring me in or para transit and they will ask them personal questions about me and I’m like excuse me, they are my driver they don’t know anything about me.
    And yes, the land of its over there.

(Sorry, I didn't see you there) "Yes you did, what are you blind". (Actually I am, I said I was sorry). Or the can you please read to me the menu, I am visually impaired. I get number 5 a lot lol!
    Whenever I’m out with my family like in social gathering, people start asking them questions when I’m right next to them.
    They ask things like:
    How did she become blind?
    Was she born like that?
    Or,
    Can she go to the toilet by herself?
    Or,
    Does anyone have to help her have a bath or a shower?
    Or,
    How can she use a phone if she can’t see?
    And these things really annoy me because:
    A. They’re being discriminative towards me because technology is so advanced now that anyone can use a phone no matter what disability they have.
    B. They’re asking too many personal questions.
    C. I have the capability of speaking for myself.

    • @CaylawithaC
      @CaylawithaC  4 года назад +1

      That is really frustrating. And what intrusive and ignorant questions

  • @MagicalAuroraDream
    @MagicalAuroraDream 5 лет назад +1

    Yes, right on, Cayla! These are all irritants to me as well. They don't super offend me or anything but they do ruffle my feathers.
    Even people familiar and supportive and knowledgable of blind people, like parents, can make some of these rookie mistakes. My dad still says sometimes, after over two decades, "It's over there" or something of that nature. My response is typically along the lines of "Define over there?"
    I've had family say I'm lucky I don't have to drive myself, that it's a real pain in the butt. However, it's definitely limiting, particularly in a rural or even a small city type setting. I typically don't think a lot about my inability to drive, but I do sometimes get envious. I dream of a day when I can own and operate my dream car, a cute little Volkswagen Beetle. I'll take self-driving cars as they come, but a modern, selfdriving beetle would be ultimate!
    Also, it does kind of get me when people with very good vision complain about vision loss as if it's such a big deal. My mom has gone in the last 3 or so years to picture perfect vision to somewhat poor close-up vision, needing some of the strongest over-the-counter reading glasses. To her, it's kind of a big deal. Now, she perpetually needs her readers at hand and, while she doesn't often complain, she does sometimes, especially when she notes how quickly it happens. It might be insensitive of me, but sometimes I think, and occasionally say, that least she has an expert at hand should she need one! 😄
    My WORST blindness irritant, by far, is when people don't talk directly to me. This happens most often at restaurants with family when the server asks someone else at my table what I would like to drink or eat. However, I always just play it cool and say something like "Oh, I would like..." insert food or drink here. Fortunately for me this doesn't happen much. I always just figured people treated me as a non-entity like that because they figured blindness could be equated to intellectual disability, though I can totally agree with your possible reasons as well, Cayla. For some people, it might be a combination of the Helen Keller effect, awkwardness, assumption of intellectual disability, and the other reason you mentioned.
    I've never quite gotten the "you can't see that?" question, or haven't quite noticed it. I try to be calm about blindness-related things and let them roll off my back because I figure that I need to take these instances and try to use them as teaching moments and modeling moments that, hopefully, people will remember. Even if they don't remember, it's better than them remembering me as that rude blind woman..

    • @CaylawithaC
      @CaylawithaC  5 лет назад

      Jade Scribbler yes I agree that well intentioned and people who are well educated about blindness can still make some of these mistakes. My family and friends still occasionally do some of these things. And What a coincidence that your dream car is a cute little volkswagen beetle, that was always my dream car as well

    • @MagicalAuroraDream

      Cayla with a C That’s so awesome! I don’t know why but I just find them the cutest cars ever. They’re little while I’m rather tall, but I just can’t help loving them. Maybe it’s the cute and distinct fenders; that’s part of it.
      I build lego as a hobby to help me relax and save my sanity through my undergrad psychology program, plus the models are often adorable and have such awesome tactile detail, and they have a model beetle. I’ve not purchased it yet, but I will, and I’ll have to settle for that for awhile yet :)

    The main thing I hear that I hate the most is, "It's not MY fault you're blind! Said after they get annoyed because I couldn't see what they meant when they pointed and said "It's over there." I then tell them it's not my fault either but that fact rarely matters. I just wish they could have my eyes for a day.

    Yes! Sighted people complaining about their slightly less than perfect vision has got to be one of the most annoying things ever. A lot of my friends say stuff like “lol im so blind”... um no you’re literally not. Or “I’m totally blind without my glasses” well lucky for you that as soon as you put them on you have perfect vision! Wonder what that’s like

      🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣
      If they think it is much easier to be blind and not have to do things like drive.
      After you say that to your friends and family, you should say it's harder than you think right?????
      People don't realize hey this is much easier for Andrew because he is cited and Molly might not be able to do this the way Andrew did, because Molly is blind.
      🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣
      It is just a scenario that actually makes more sense than most people think.

    I can definitely agree with all five. I will say that out here in the professional world, I have run into people asking my coworker things that I know. Example they come to the office my coworker is not there I tell them he is not here at the time but how can I help you? they just say oh I’ll come back when The other guy is back, later they stop by the office when we are both there they end up asking the question to my coworker and most of the time it is a question that I know the answer to and sometimes it even has happened that my coworker doesn’t know the answer and he refers to me and I end up telling them the answer to their question or concern. This is very annoying and I have actually confronted some of them but they are so defensive and all I say is that I’m just letting them know if they have any questions about my blindness I am a very open person. It’s pretty difficult at times though but at the end of the day it’s their waste of time so after a while in certain cases I just let things go. But if it is something that interferes with my ability to complete certain tasks then I will advocate for myself and confront the person in the most respectful of ways but usually people get pretty uncomfortable LOL

    • @CaylawithaC

      Life Beyond Vision that’s so frustrating. I had similar problems when I was working, people just didn’t take me seriously or think that I knew anything. Plus, since I look so young, everyone just thought I was a teenager, so that really didn’t help with the whole people not taking me seriously thing.

    My husband does the “it’s over there” and “you can’t see that??” all the time. I realize I’ve only been a VIP for 18 months and it’s been an adjustment for him as well and he mostly is great about it. However- ANNOYING. As for driving- I’m 49 and drove until 18 months ago. I miss it. My options are relying on others, Uber, or taxis. Losing that independence sucks. Being able to drive is a choice as you said, but it’s also a privilege that is taken for granted until you can’t do it any longer.

  • @bluetech7753
    @bluetech7753 6 лет назад

    Hey Kayla it's me Sam, I'm also visually impaired have been practically most of my life completely blind and right eye a little more than halfway blind in the left eye. I really don't like it when people tell me that as well it's over there specially at grocery stores. I can usually find items on my own but it does take me a bit longer than a normal sighted person would I also wear glasses so at first glance I also don't look blind to certain people. I don't consider the inability to drive being lucky it does limit our independence substantially sure there are bus routes taxis and Uber but if you have to do that all the time it gets expensive probably a lot more expensive than owning your own car. Not only that you have to give yourself an extreme amount of time to get to your destination when using any kind of public transit. Walking is another option but if it's a long distance from point A to point B walking can be a little tiring and sometimes it's just not feasible in bad weather conditions. Employment can be difficult to obtain most employers want you to have personal Transportation that is one of the first things they will ask you in an interview how are you going to be getting to work? Also talking about employment some employers are reluctant to hire visually impaired people because they feel that it's a liability issue which is the reason why some visually impaired people usually just live off of Social Security because you can get benefits if you're legally blind and of course there are some blind or visually impaired people that actually do work as for the ones that work they are the lucky ones. Anyway thanks for sharing great video.

      R.O.P is a potentially blinding eye disease that causes the eye and the blood vessel to detach away from the retina.
      As for the eye inflammation from the Juvenile Rheumatoid Arthritis, uveitis and iritis can occur. Sometimes patience may develop cataracts or glaucoma.

      My 6 year old daughter's visual acuity fluctuates a lot, but in a perfect environment of the ophthalmologists office, her last measurement was 20/25 and 20/30. Her vision is way different in bright sunlight, especially when going from indoors to a bright sunshiny day. She trips and falls a lot and bumps her head all the time. I was just told that she has no peripheral vision. My understanding is that having no peripheral vision can make it hard to travel, especially when alone. My daughter was just given a white cane and she's going to be getting O&M training and will be taught how to protect her head and stomach when she falls. I'd think that if she has a cane, it's just fine for you to have one too. Maybe look online for your state center for the blind or which organization handles that for your area. You may be able to get O&M training too so you can properly use a cane. Best wishes!
