I really love when you make this type of content, would love a part 2 Do you have a list of game recommendations floating around? Has someone made something like a community spreadsheet of their favorite games/conversion mods by year?
"It breathes more life into the games. They feel that much more immersive." EXACTLY. It's more than just the screen size, it's the aspect ratio. It stops feeling like you're playing a game and more like you're looking into another reality through a window.
@@MisterUrbanWorld In general retro games are at whatever aspect ration they were created at. However, retro PC games often have some sort of mod that enables altering the aspect ratio. Playing classic games in 21:9 is some wild shit, man.
I personally love the black bars. It reminds me of an arcade game with the monitor surrounded by the usually black bezel that forces your full attention on the game. Imagine edge to edge gaming and how it fights with your busy background.
When I first got my widescreen monitor I was still playing Quake 3 Arena, Call of Duty 2003 and UO, and also Return to Castel Wolfenstein. And those were easy to get playing in widescreen. I found the set up on widescreen gamerz and all I had to do was go into the .cfg file for both single and multiplayer using ether note pad or word pad (which ever you prefer) and change the resolution to the monitors native and change the mode: -1. Wolf had a weird crashing issue when it played cinematics and I found going back the a 4 : 3 Res allowed it to advance to the next level and then saved the game then go back and change the .cfg and continue in widescreen.
Thank you very much for going into such detail with these classic. I had a dual-monitor 16:9 setup but now I'm looking to streamline my setup - a single 32:9 monitor seems great!
3:10 AKSHUALLY you can't see enemies in BG ahead of the time no matter the resolution you're playing at. The "field of view" that shows enemies on the screen is a fixed radius around your character.
With regards to wanting to have more height resolution I think 49 inch with 32:10? 5120x1600 would be like having 2x 30" 2560x1600 monitors. That would be the perfect monitor imho. I hope they produce it in the future.
Yes that'd be great. But for now, it's best to get a 49" (42" preferred) 4K Monitor which would be equivalent to having 2 of 32:2 monitors stacked on top
dude... quite honestly... what i want right now is for you to sit in front of one of those 4x5 CRT monitor setups that security rooms have... and play games on that... INCLUDING fallout 2. no joke!!! that would be insane.
I play world of warcraft classic and diablo 2 on 21:9 and now I want to try in 32:9. I'm glad you still putting out fun content, been following since 2012.
Yea. I didn't see how you did super ultra wide with baldurs gate 2? I did the same thing as you. Edited the Baldurs gate lua but it had those black bits on the edge. Have you figured out a workaround?
There are DirectX 11 renderers available for Unreal Tournament and Deus Ex plus some other Unreal engine games. I've only tried it with UT which looks amazing with a few glitches here and there, no idea if they'd work better with ultra wide though.
Surprised you didn't try any racing games like Trackmania nations forever, dirt 3, carmageddon max damage etc. Xash3D should let you run half-life 1 & its mods in pretty wide resolutions so worth checking that too.
32:9 seems too risky to make the jump from 21:9. It took me years of deliberation to switch from 16:9 to 21:9 and it's not all rosebuds due to compatibility issues. I do enjoy it for FPS games though.
Hello, I can't get my Fallout 2 to take up the whole screen space, I set my res to 3440x1440 or 5160x2160 and the image is surrounded by black bars (UI is fine across the bottom, albeit a bit small) could you please inform me how you got it configured? Thanks
My CoolerMaster MM520 is starting to die. I had a Xornet, Spawn, and now this MM520, loved them all. My problem is, when I move it fast, like flicking around to move in FPS games (low sens), it freezes, then catches up all at once. Which is super annoying. Obviously there's no fix, and though I've had mine for 2 years, I've seen people say it started in as little as a few months. So buying another one is off the table. That said, for people who like that form factor, what would you recommend? I love the ring finger rest, thumb and pinky areas, and overall size (though I don't mind smaller, bigger would be mehh). Any ideas? Thanks bro, been following you since the TD days!
Tek Syndicate Can't get Dark Messiah of Might and Magic to run on Windows 10. Apparently the biggest enemy of this game on Win10 is tabbing out. The problem is, that my monitor at startup of every game does this thing with the monitor recognition as if you would change the input. So basically it is as if I would automatically Alt tab out of the game while launching it. So it gets stuck immediately. All the PCGamingwiki stuff does not work to fix it and I tried also every tip on forums. It seems to run well enough on Manjaro though but only through Wine, not out of Steam, which annoys me. The loading times are horrendous on Wine. 2-3 minutes when starting a new game. I hope some day GoG will create a Win 10 compatible version. I never played it, but always wanted to.
I miss 4:3 and having height to my monitor and thus games. This is my field of vision qph.fs.quoracdn.net/main-qimg-677aeb9e90c716f487e25214822d114d-c (62° by 70°) and I really notice not having a upper or lower area to my monitor. I would appreciate you giving 4:3 gaming a try before extolling ultra-wide as a virtue. If you need it to be wider just get a bigger monitor. Like back in the day I had a 52-inch 4:3 that was still as wide as that monitor but it also had the height aspect of 4:3 and because of that lack of border it felt a lot more immersive than wide screen aspect ratios it had a pixel size of 320x280 but that's how it was I would love to see a 8k 4:3 monitor. It would look like 3 of these displays stacked on top of each other.
Well since 4k Is a 16x9 format which way would you want the display to be 4k vertically or horizontally I assume you would keep the 4k pixel width and then you could enjoy about 700 pixels or about 6 total inches of monitor worth of letterboxing everytime you watch a movie that came out after vhs died plus you would still lose about 2 inches of width
@@ellis90009 Widescreen has it's place for movies shot in wide format. This video is exclusively dedicated to gaming and I meant it in that context with some implied use in software applications too but not movies.
Thx for video. great stuff. I just got Samsung CRG9 49 inch 5120x1440. So far only was able to try Morrowind and it works great with FOV 100. Also tried Everquest 2 and works great but dynamic field of view should be disabled. If you have time to check FO3, FONV, FO4, Oblivion and Skyrim would be great :)
Also tested WL3 and works great. The Outer Worlds works also and with FOV of 95. Pillars of Eternity while working fine, has a problem of having important UI elements at the left corner which makes it unpractical as you need to move mouse and your head a lot for everyaction...

EXACTLY. It's more than just the screen size, it's the aspect ratio. It stops feeling like you're playing a game and more like you're looking into another reality through a window.
Nothing tops VR for immersion, but I'm interested in a curved monitor, but was told retro games wouldn't work, so I'm researching.

There is a widescreen mod for the original version of Baldur's Gate, but I am fairly certain it doesn't work with the enhanced edition.
Today I started playing Amid Evil. It looks purdy with chunky pixels on my 35" ultrawide monitor.
