Just a little geography info... Diani Beach is in Diani (of course) which is in Kwale County. That means you went from Mombasa County wherein you find Mombasa Island -- location of Old Town -- to Diani in Kwale County 😉 which is why it felt like a trip because they're literally two different places (that happen to be relatively close to each other). Kwale County and Mombasa County have two different local governments/municipalities and are two (2) of the forty seven (47) counties that make up the Republic of Kenya.

      @@UrbanGuitarLegend There certainly are.
The most famous is probably Nyali Beach.
On New Years Day/during Christmas and the end of the year many, many Kenyans travel down to Nyali Beach (because many people will be off work\on paid leave).
Further north along the coastline of the mainland itself of Mombasa County is Mombasa Beach.
If you want a great place to visit on Mombasa Island, there is the ancient marvel of Old Town, but there is also the modern Mama Ngina Waterfront which is a beautiful attraction in its own right.

On the Swahili Coast (the coastline that runs from the Horn of Africa\Somalia, through Kenya, and down into Tanzania (basically as far as Mozambique) the different times of the year correspond to which beaches have seaweed on them, and how much seaweed is deposited (during storms and high tide and such) -- because of ocean currents and the weather patterns caused when the different water temperatures meet the prevailing winds at any one place/time along the coast. So one part might be the location that a storm hits a few days prior (hence the seaweed there), when another spot on the same coast\beach will be much cleaner cause the seaweed has been cleared by the tides cause a storm hasn't come through there recently.

There's a common saying in East Africa when asked the passenger capacity of a vehicle, "Always one more".! We used to have a little cottage at Diani. Back in the 50s and 60s, the place saw virtually no tourists, other than Kenyans on holiday breaks. Today, Diani is virtually a German colony, and beaches north of Mombasa are Italian.

Then I talked with a friend from Kenya and she was worried about me here in the US because she said she heard on the news we had monkey pox here in the US and in Canada.... 🤣- See what I'm saying... I mean news is good sometimes but....
When I went to Paris in May I checked our US Stated Department website and France was listed as RED - "do not travel" because they just had an election at that time ... I still went, lol. For Kenya we now have a Yellow... which is "exercise caution" but that's almost everywhere in the world. I exercise caution here in the US. Diani Beach\Kwale County is commonly referred to by Kenyans as 'South Coast', and is part of the mainland of Kenya.
Mombasa Island\Mombasa County and areas inland of the Island like Nyali are commonly referred to by Kenyans as being 'North Coast', and Mombasa Island is actually not part of the mainland of Kenya (hence it being an island, save for old infrastructure that cut off the channel/inlet on one side of the island, but that will eventually be removed (I believe) when the new bridges in and out of Mombasa Island are completed\officially commissioned for use returning it to being a true island).

Diani Beach was THE WORST TRAVEL EXPERIENCE OF MY LIFE. Nothing comes close to how bad my time there was. I was accosted by solicitors every 3-5 minutes on the beach. LITERALLY! On the first day, I never got to sit down on the towel I brought. I didn’t even get a chance to swim. One group of guys held my girlfriend and I hostage until we paid them a stupid amount of money to let us go. I got violently ill from food I ate there and ended up having a seizure from the effects of my extreme illness. The hotel we stayed at was hooked up to salt water. The sinks and showers were literally dispensing salt water-undrinkable even when filtered. On top of that, the showers were ice cold.
In case it makes a difference, I’m white and my girlfriend is native to Kenya.
