I'm kinda shit at racing games, but I'm great at FPS games and I came up against this problem alot.
The key is to not care about winning or losing, but to care about doing your best. See if you really want to win, but you're losing, your first instinct is usually something like speeding up or making bigger plays to recover from mistakes, but one mistake leads to another (since a mistake usually leaves you in a vulnerable position, or you might not realise that you're not placed where you would normally be had you not made the mistake) and doing that will usually lead to even more mistakes.
So instead of trying to beat the other people, try to beat yourself instead. Try to beat distractions, try to beat mistakes, try to be better than you've ever been before because that is all you can aim for, and you just have to hope it's good enough. One day when you've pushed yourself far enough, it will be.
Lack of focus is the enemy. And competition can be a distraction.
EDIT: Just to clarify, you obviously need to WANT to win, otherwise you won't push yourself. You just need the mindset that you don't HAVE to win. You need to realise that being last ain't that big a deal if you tried your best then your opponents were just better. You'll keep getting better if you keep trying and keep practicing, so just look at it like you won't be losing forever, just today.
      Everyone loses when they start.

I would fall above amatures, I know lots of stuff in theory and can apply them successfuly on the course. But because I play only rally simulations, I don't memorize any tracks, I learned to predict the roads and listen to my co-driver, while using anything I can to my advantage and make up my strategy as the course progresses. Like knowing the limits of my car, when I should push hard for time, or play it safe. Something that I learned driving 90's group A cars. Skidding is real in these cars...

Amateur mindset, but the experience of a pro. I really do overdrive and push myself to the limit giving it my 110% on races, I seem to only be able to pace myself if there's not a single car ahead of me, which explains my poor consistency yet usually the fastest qualifying laps. If I can't maintain pole and as long as there's someone going faster than me, I'm going to try my best to match that person when I really should be focusing on my own pace instead.

I'm an beginner. I've just started sim racing 2 months ago, playing Assetto Corsa, with an average time of 3-4 hours a week. I'm still using mouse steering tho, my parents won't let me buy a steering wheel so I guess I need to wait for that.
But you know what? Mouse steering is not that bad. Of course you're not faster than anyone else in online races. But at least you have better control of the car compared to keyboard control. I've already learned the basic like racing line, braking point, and taking an apex in tracks like Imola, Monza, and Silverstone. But it's difficult for me to control the throttle and brake input (mouse steering doesn't allow you to control your throttle and brake input ofc). So I guess I need to wait for a steering wheel to learn that.
I enjoyed playing offline with bots and doing some laps in practice mode tho. Maybe I will focus more on improving my racing skills later when I managed to buy an steering wheel.

Aliens are aliens because what they do cannot be replicated with skill, you can try as hard as you want but if you don't understand the basic concepts they are using (at least it is basic to them anyway) then you'll never make their lap times. @@Delimon007 IMO that's where you're wrong. While yes there is an area of an alien's driving that surpasses skill, one can still reach that upper echelon of drivers entirely with their own skill. It just comes down to how much practice they have and how they use said skill.

If that were possible then everyone would be able to reach the times of aliens but that's not possible. Take it from a guy who can consistently make top 50 times in many different games, sometimes players are far out of your league. Even if I can make a top 20 time there are times where I reach the limit of my skills and cannot get anywhere near the absolute best time.
It's pretty obvious to me that you've never competed in the pro environment before, join us one day and you'll realize how stupid this statement actually is.
Reaching the top 1% of the community is not an achievement. Reaching the top 1% of the top 1% of a community IS an achievement and there are STILL several brackets of skill levels within that top 1%. You're not going to be replicating what those players are doing and it is a fools game to try to do so. People are born with different skill sets and racing is no different. Everyone has their own peaks some much higher than others. Competitive environments have never been fair and they never will be.

And for the record, you can practice as much as you want, most drivers still cannot beat me even when I stop playing a game for months and I can come back and still beat my old times which are already close to the very top of the leaderboards. It takes a lot more than just skill to reach the alien level, it's just simple natural ability. Aliens don't need to spend hour after hour after hour to accomplish a goal that they've set for themselves. The only time they WILL put this much effort into something is when they are practicing for an actual competition. Reaching alien status isn't something you can just practice for an achieve, it requires a high level of intellect, ability to predict what will happen, strong follow through, exact and precise inputs for the car even including things like blipping, curb usage, etc. It's the exact same reason why you can see the fastest drivers IRL having different brackets of skill and drivers always finding ways to get more time.
What a lot of people do not understand or comprehend is that just because YOU are improving does not mean that they are not improving as well. Once you have reached the top you are still improving and the only way you can EVER reach them is if you are improving at a faster rate than they are hence, why I'm able to go back to playing other racing games whether it be sim or arcade and beat my old leaderboard times.
It's really just not that simple and it never has been.

i think that i'm a amateur in psych, since i looked up a lot about cars and racing in general, and even tried to apply it and look for a engaging way to connect with the Racing Genre, but my soul is from a beginner who don't really like racing that much, i pretty much stood in FH4 since the start and i love to max and speed test cars performances, the glow in racing for me is not to stand in the podium and things like that, i like to see the cars passing each other, and if i like one car i don't bother to look it from behind for a while before i ram into oblivion and quit 10 seconds later to build the car i'm into rn, don't get me wrong about this ramming thing i don't really play online, and when i do i usually don't even touch the other cars unless extremely necessary (which i think is a really nice quality to master in my crazy driving style) or if it's an accident, i have this beginner thing that i'm trying to get rid of that is I LOVE FAST CARS, but just when you're laying 120mph with just a 2 second press into full throttle and i find myself in a pretty embarrassing close turn, it's quite impossible to not use the walls as a "guide me daddy" thing, and since i'm mainly focusing on straight line performance i don't really practice cornering that much, this video made me realize how stupid i look by not cornering or focusing on being steady instead of "i have only 2 buttons, one go on the other one go on too but the other way around"

As an amateur myself, I think the faster way for consistency is going faster and faster till the limit.. then gradually modulating. I mean, free practise to the limit, optimise your routines for timed qualyfying sessons, then "modulate" for races. Remember, we learn from our mistakes more than from our achivements.

I am a very competitive sim racer (Not completely a pro but make very less mistakes and have decent experience), unfortunately my steering wheel broke, it shifts up two times when I press the pedal once and keeps giving full left input even when I am turning right or not even turning, after a lot of convincing I finally convinced my father to get a new steering wheel for me since I have been using that steering wheel for 11 yrs, I will get it when I reach my weight loss goal, so now I exercise in my playing time to reach my weight loss goal faster 😄

I'm playing casually every once for a while and consider myself inbetween beginner and amateur. I know a lot of techniques but I do not have much knowledge of racetracks. After one hour of warm-up my pace becomes fairly consistent and I realize all my mistakes. I am a slow driver but the fun of driving is for me more important than being fast.

I'm an amateur, since I know pretty well how to drive in races, but I need a steering wheel, pedals and shifter to improve myself. I arrived to a point where it's difficult to improve with controller, I need more sensitivity. I still have to improve on how to setup the car and how to recognize setup issues, but I know well when I do some errors on driving. I started playing racing games like 15 years ago, but in the last times it isn't that easy to improve. Even because I don't play enough too.

I think I would place myself between amateur and pro'. I know most of the tracks and I have done countless battles on Gran Turismo but there are times where I would give in the pressure and others where I feel mentally as solid as a rock just hunting for a better laptime and improving my driving line during close races

Happy to discover I'm at least an amateur. Unfortunately I put in as many hours as a pro, though. I instinctively want to blame my skill level on the fact that I use a controller and not a wheel; especially when it comes to cornering and tire management.

If there’s one thing I’ve noticed a couple of times during some races I partake in is that I get greedy depending what car I’m driving. And when I race, (mostly on the turns) I get so greedy that I take the turns too fast or attempt to hit the apex flawlessly. My great uncle says he gets greedy too, but he knows a lot more about racing than I think he does. Other than that, I don’t really call myself a pro on certain games when it comes to online. I might say that only to the A.I. But I’m not perfect, so I still restart or make mistakes. So I’m still in a learning process.

“Your goal is not to win. Your goal is to go faster. “
“Sometimes you deal with traffic, sometimes you are the traffic.”
When you’re up against a driver that you need to push hard to pass, you have a chance to get faster. Leisurely follow them for a lap or two; observe.
Where are you faster? That’s a passing opportunity.
Where are they faster? Can you replicate it or adapt it to your driving style?
This approach helps many people keep cool and collected, excited even to see a faster driver in their side view mirror. This translates to less incidents, more races finished, and subsequently more races won.

I'm definitely classified as an amateur I've been playing on and off for 5 years, frequently for 3. I have impeccable pace, awareness, and reaction as long as I see somebody else's time at the top. Normally I carry great pace but I screw up as I am not motivated, the only times I drive impeccably is time trials, and racing against someone else.
I think the weirdest thing is that when I screw up in a race I manage to save it, and come just short or match the last lap. I'm never able to replicate the result outside of a race. It's frustrating to try to improve but not be able to match my own pace in a race while in a private practice on my own. I drive Nordschleife about 90% of the time that I race or practice.
I seriously can't solve this puzzle. If anyone can help me figure out whatever problem whether mentally, or physically, or both.
I tend to zone out in a race and then realize that I've set a fastest lap or moved up a position. But I can't do that on my hot lapping in practice.

Id consider myself an alien. Its been quite some time since I popped a GT disc into my ps3, but when GT 6 was still online, I was consistently setting record laptimes in the top 50-400 every week without much practice or playtime at all. I drive professionally now, but not on a track. Although the way I drive my rig would make you think otherwise.
Oh, and fun fact: ive never owned a steering wheel for GT. Id did all of this with a controller and a few hours of time per week. I never made it into the GT competitions, simply due to the fact that they guys that spend 80+ hours a week on the game knew every exploit on the track. But I always gave them a run for their money early on in GT5, and its something I'll always remember.

A very well put together video there👍 I guess I'm somewhere between Amateur/Pro levels, because whilst I've been playing all sorts of racing games throughout most of my life actually, as well as knowing most tracks well, along with track respect for others and such, there's still a lot of people I know who are (annoyingly) faster than me😫😂

I feel I fall in this weird in-between, I prefer open world driving games way more then track based driving because I like the freedom of choice and I really dislike very tight tracks, I much prefer flowy fast tracks like the nordschleife, so I play a lot of games like fh4 and the like, but I've recently gotten into iracing, and I know how to and can drive the car fast but I don't know any tracks so that makes me slow.

I feel like I'm in between a beginner and an amateur. I can drive without major assists like TC and ABS, but I couldn't turn off racing line for any tracks unless I've spent a ridiculous amount of time on them. The Nordschleife is the only track I could drive without racing line. Also, my consistency is that of Pastor Maldonado. I can be "fast" but I also have the tendency to make mistakes and crash. But it's not like I'm not trying to improve myself though!

I do not consider myself anything tbh because I only play and hour or two each months but I used to play a lot in the past (15-20 Hours a week).
But there’s only one advice that I can give just: Take A Break.
I used to Take a break between a week or a month and come back. (Not because I was bored)
Every time I did that I came back better, idk if it’s the same thing for the others.
I’ve done this quite a few times where I thought I wasn’t improving at all so I changed games or just stopped playing.
    Guess what?
I always improved after a break because it gave me time to assimilate everything I learned, and rest as well.

I personally believe i'm somewhere between an Amateur and a Pro in my skill level, I have the pace, the knowledge, the racecraft, the experience, but I'm slightly more inconsistent than I's like to be, and I am a bit prone to making mistakes out on track, say the odd lockup of the brakes, or the odd spin, but I can recognise those mistakes and improve upon them.

I'd say I'm comfortably a high-amateur or (very) low pro. I have the experience of a pro and would like to think I understand racing theory and execute it very well, but I absolutely do not have the consistency or the stress tolerance of what you define as "pro" yet. It really depends on the day for me. One day, most likely after I graduate college I will most likely see some real improvements in my racing skill.

After playing alot of project trackday (it's a roblox racing sim, in a stretch and because my laptop cannot handle even the racing sims that come first in the pc). I manage to learn quite fast in tracks that I was not familiar, I also understand how to brake in different car models, how you control that specific car and such.
Because of my facination about how cool racing sims are, I tried playing gran turismo on the psp. I also have the gran turismo on the ps1, but I like the cockpit view on the psp.
Let's just say that with what I learned in the game, some of it transferred to gt. I am currently beating rank A drivers after 3 days of driving sarthe 223 and the old one with no corners on the fast straight.
I know I know, roblox and old gt games won't make any difference and I would just be lower than the beginner class, but hey atleast I tried. Maybe someday I would get the real stuff and be a beginner or amateur on it, but not today.
I hope you all have a great day.

From the perspective of someone who has been playing with sims since Grand Turismo first came out for playstation, I have to say this: If you can't complete a race in first, without track offs, unsportsmanlike contact, or dive bombing corners and using a shady pass-and-block maneuver on your way out of corners racing against AI, you have no business racing against other people.
