This was really in-depth. Thank you. It made me feel even better about my new choice of switching to discs. My planner journey in case this interest anyone:
Over the years in this order I, similar to you, did: bound notebook (trying to go as tiny and cheap as I could for purse-lightness but gradually have settled into loving half letter which does still fit in a big enough purse though heavier than I'd like)...then traveler's notebook which seemed like the holy grail...then rings were a big upgrade...and now discs since I finally realized their major pros and fell in love. I feel so excited about discs.
To be very custom and for the creative fun of it, I do my own inserts (for now on graph paper though may switch to dots...eventually will try designing on computer too but it's fun using my hands and pen). My style incorporates bullet journaling and has sections in dividers. Still experimenting and trying things out. I get ideas from my own head and from looking at inserts and printables by various shops and brands. I focus much more of minimal enough function than beauty for this - not into stickers, drawing, lettering, stickies, bunch of moving parts, etc., as I'm very artsy and that'd distract me from the functions. Except no one's dividers or covers are quite my style so am getting into DIYing those, if even just simple cardstock in colors I like for now (Michael's has tons of options). I use Zebra highlighters in colors I like in functional way. It was distracting having colors and notebooks not my style enough so I'm getting stuff looking more like me without it being a big, distracting art project.
On a very tight budget, I can basically DIY all of a disc planner, cheap hacks like making covers out of Dollar Tree cutting mats, and Staples can laminate stuff and loan me their paper cutter. Metal discs can be an upgrade later but plastic ones are so affordable for now. Except the big investment I can't seem to find a good way around (the hack of scissors and hole punch takes too long) is think I do have to buy a disc puncher. Leverage's big one is better than ARC's according to a video comparing them closely. Disc-o-Rama by We R Memory Keepers is I guess an option too though more limited. The plastic one by Leverage just is more limited than the big metal one. Not sure I'd wanna bother with the little one-punch disc punchers (time-intensive and doubt the quality is great) though I saw one with pretty good reviews but extremely long shipping time. Happy Planner disc puncher has too many cons for me and I heard TUL (spelling?) one may be similar to that.
P.S. Some of the cons of discs said in this video aren't true...it just takes looking around more at options out there like of covers and sizes. Can also cut things down to whatever size and diy stuff.🙂

@@MomYePlans Ended up just buying $6 pack of 50 lined Martha Stewart pages at Staples. So now my cheap diy first discbound notebook is ready! Good enough for now!

I love journals that lay flat. Using your hand to hold one side of the notebook open ends up sort of annoying me.

I personally prefer traveller notebook. I think it's the feel of the notebook, i would choose traveller notebook over rings or discs

I know this an old video but it's really helpful. I am in the middle of a dilemma, I bought the Franklin covey compact full system, but then found out about the Midori Travelers notebook and ordered all the inserts and supplies, lastly I ordered the A6 Hobonichi Techo. the Techo is too small will return that. The Franklin covey is a good system but so bulky and expensive, not sure I can return it if I don't decide to stick with it. I am leaning towards keeping the Travelers notebook. it's soooo cool and you can do so much with it. Your thoughts? I have seen your recent videos on the GTD and Franklin Covey, so your a good person to comment on the different systems, Thanks !! Stay Awesome!! :)

So I find the systems very different! Franklin covey is very structured and time based, I find this system best for work or people who structure their day based on time ie, you have meetings, specific things that need to be done at certain times etc. If you’re someone who really just has a list of to dos to get through in a day I think Franklin covey can be a bit much. Travelers notebook I love for traveling because of its compactness but for actual scheduling and planning I personally find it hard because there’s not much flexibility to move things around. Hope that helps!

Notiq also makes pocket size covers for disc bound planners (5 discs)

I use a mini binder from Russel Hazel. I also have an A5 and A6 from Michael's and Hobby Lobby but I do not like the way they are rigid and don't lie completely flat like the mini binder. Also, the pages at the back of those binders curl in. I would like to try a disc bound planner but I don't know if the regular copy paper or loose leaf paper that I cut to size for my binders would stay on the discs. It seems that you would need only premium paper. I use a traveler's notebook fro journaling.

Oo yes I hate when planners don’t lie flat as well! So you can definitely find planners that do lie flat if that’s the only thing you don’t like! AliExpress has some very affordable floppy type planners if you want to try it out or most leather planners will lie flat :) regarding discs, you can absolutely just use copy paper which will stay in the discs! It’s best to at least have a thicker cover page but absolutely the inside pages don’t need to be premium paper. I have many inserts in my discbound that are just in regular 20lbs copy paper! Hope that helps!
