Used this system when I was living off my motorcycle. I could make a quick camp by stringing a tarp off the side of the bike and throwing this bag under it. Would protect from any wind, rain, or snow blowing under the tarp. Also did great in the tent.
Great video. I used your information to make my final decision. I bought the system piece meal. I paid $50 for the Bivy & $50 for the Patrol Bag all brand new. I dont plan to camp in extreme cold weather so this is fine. If I need more warmth, a wool blanket will work. To top off my system, I added a $36 Sleep Pad. So for $136, I got a great system. Thanks for the great info.

I was 21 in 1989 when Batman with Jack Nicholson and Michael Keaton came out. And I saw it in the movie theater. I was a Boy Scout as a teenager and I camped with my parents too. So I learned something about moderate camping and hiking when I was young. I haven't been camping and hiking much these days. I would have to sleep earlier and focus on doing it. I just happened to notice this video when scrolling through videos suggested by RUclips. I was searching for a video related to "modern sleep," I think possibly partly related to modern monophasic sleeping patterns compared to older poly-phasic sleep patterns. I had a particular video in mind. But I haven't found it yet. Oh! I just remembered that I was looking for a video about what happens when a night owl wakes up early. And I found it again. But maybe I can continue watching this video later. I also subscribed. Thanks!

One enterprising young sergeant used 1/4" PVC piping cut to order to place into the four corners of a U.S. Army cot. He then sold the "cages" for $10 each to his fellow soldiers. You put the mosquito "bar" (netting) over that, and the pipe "cage" allows you to sit up inside the netting area of the cot to get dressed, etc. Mosquito netting only works if you keep it 1-2 inches away from your skin!

Great review! Completely agree on the value for the price and the awesomeness of the system. Love the name Crafty Crow, I feel that spirit animal as well. Cool serendipity. Just got this bag system and cant wait to try it this weekend.
I bought a complete MSS (Bivvy bag, patrol bag, intermediate bag and stuff sack) for $140 in new, surplus condition at a gun show last weekend. I got the self inflating ground mat that goes inside the Bivvy bag and under the bags for $20 in new, surplus condition.
That's a great price. I'm looking to buy two the lowest price I've found us $232 each (used, but in good condition). I guess I need to go to a gun show. Apparently, they sent a lot of these to Ukraine, so they're harder to come by these days.
@@DDDYLNabout 2 years ago a army navy store in my town in SC, which really doesn't sell military surplus anymore, just trendy clothes. Soldiers still sell owner some stuff usually when they go awol I believe lol.anyway I was in there and know owner, some guy sold one to owner, like brand new, I don't think it had ever been used, inner and outer bag gray, not black, no bivy, vic let me have it for $85.00!! There is a unbelievable real military surplus warehouse in honea path SC, I'm sure he would ship to you, my sister and I were there and she found a mountain bag, down bag, very good condition for $30.00.
Good video brother! I’ve used the MSS that I bought probably over a decade ago at my local surp store for under $100, many many times. Still going strong. I loved it so much that I shelled out just about exactly as much as you did for a brand new one-still in the box in my closet so I have it for the future-if and when old trusty gives out. Also I wanna give a shout out to my old M1949 mountain bag-love that thing too!
They're getting harder to find these days, because the government sent a bunch of them to Ukraine. I live in an area without a lot of military surplus stores.
I’ve used this setup recently in 32-35° weather thinking there was no way I’d be cold and I will say I wasn’t terribly cold, but I was pretty damn cold and certainly was not warm and cozy by any means. This was with me also wearing long underwear op and bottom, socks, a thick flannel long sleeve, hoodie and a beanie while also having a flannel sheet and a cotton knit blanket stuffed inside the bag with me.. so in regards to temperature rating I would definitely have to say unless you are fully dressed for extreme cold such as thick wool socks and your extreme cold pants/tops, I would not take this system below 30° without proper clothing and think you’re going to be warm because you won’t be. Oh and this was inside of a jeep as well so no ground temp or wind at play either. So consider that before taking your bag out and prepare appropriately. Aside from that it’s a solid setup, and better than most everyday bags you find on the market, aside from the expensive high compression light weight top of the line stuff you can get now at REI.
REI is mostly for granola bar, spandex wearing fruitcakes, but they do have good gear as long as your willing to take out an equity loan on your house.
@@concernedcitizen2898 lol agreed on that..seems it’s become a store for the woke left wing extremists..the gear is legit, but unjustifiably expensive.
I find that sleeping inside of vehicles is worse than sleeping on the ground. I don’t know. Maybe more wind gets in than when you’re on the ground. I’ve slept in very cold temperatures in this system with a sleeping pad and a “woobie” inside the bag and although a little uncomfortable, it is totally good enough to sleep in. Adding more layers of blankets etc could definitely make this system warm enough to sleep in extremely cold temps.
How do you store your bags?? I’ve had my two bags, w/o the bivy, down to the low 20s and I woke up more than a few times having to vent. Granted I was wearing lvl 1 and 2 grid fleece. But if your bags are always compressed-you need to spend a good amount of time fluffing them up. In addition, any cold bag is useless without a good pad-and a jeep is the worse place to be in the cold-steel isn’t an insulator. Just my 2c
Thanks. I’ve still got one of the old mummy bags like you have, and was always my go to bag since scouts. Not sure which one I like better, but this one is definitely more versatile
Your very welcome. They have gotten a little more expensive, but your getting 2 bags and a bivy out of it, so still a good price when you take that into consideration
I live in Minnesota I'm 60yr old and been using military gear for over 40yrs I've been in some extreme cool weather traveling fright train..No Disrespect the Military system Had cold spot trapped between the layers, I'll went back to my Old Extreme cold it worth caring in My Large Allison Pack I just rolled up in a decent tarp
Are you talking about the old green “mummy bags” as I called them? If so, those things are great too. I finally got one way back when I was in scouts and I loved it. And your right, those old things are hard to beat too. I once camped in 20 degree weather in a hammock with one of those bags and a couple of wool blankets, and stayed toasty warm all night. No underquilt or anything
I've used my MSS for about the past 5 years. It's a great set of bags. I use it year-round and generally split it according to the weather. A little on the heavy side especially for a winter camp.
@FuknKms with the Gore-Tex bivy you don’t need anything else since it is waterproof. But I have tried completely covering my head and sealing it up as designed, and I wouldn’t want to spend too much time closed up in it. You don’t need a tarp, but you would be more comfortable with one in my opinion
i put the black bag in a regular military mummy bag for cold camping . extremely warm like that . much warmer than this type of ecws . the gore tex cover is a must for staying warm . i tried the black bag , alone , for a late fall camp . got down to around 40 degrees . i froze in that bag . no way it is rated for 0 degrees .
Funny I came across this. I just bought this system. Back in 2011 I was issued this sleep system during my infantry training. I remember we finally got settled in for the night and as soon as I got in, it started raining hard. I mean HARD. I started to laugh because I was absolutely bone dry. All through the night. I thought this piece of kit was amazing.
I found two complete MSS at a thrift store for $40.00. I just started finding all the bags & bivies individually priced of shelves. I felt like I was robbing the place.
The higher priced ones are usually the hand-picked ones in the best shaped, some of which are even overstock from Tennier (like when they’re ending a line), or had never been issued, but returned.
@@TheCraftyCrowShow yeah buddy! Oh and speaking of camping trip. Here is a name just for you and your latest experience. Camp Frustration! Jason likes it too.
Just subbed to the channel from this video! With this system was there any issues with condensation inside the bag after sleeping out in the cold? I had this issue with the poncho & liner ranger roll set up. Thanks and awesome channel!
Thanks a lot, and glad you enjoyed the video. I have got some condensation I noticed, but only after pulling my head inside the bag and breathing into it all night (like I’m not supposed to do). Every other time when I’ve kept only my mouth exposed and a gaiter over it I haven’t noticed any at all. I’m assuming the Gore-tex liner helps get rid of any that might unknowingly accumulate
I got a $50 coleman 0° synthetic north rim bag, a $50 nemo switchback closed cell foam mat r-value of 2, and a $50 wool/alpaca mix blanket that's big but thin so I can fold it in half and still have plenty of room under it. I camp in a hammock and have been down to 28° and sweating. A bit heavy at around 8lbs with the hammock and tarp and also looking into an underquilt so about 10lbs all said and done but my whole pack with everything is only about 15-20lbs compared to the old days when you couldn't go camping for under 35lbs worth of gear
Been debating an underquilt / overquilt setup for my hammock too. But a setup about like yours is what I’ve used in my hammock before and been really comfortable
@TheCraftyCrowShow yeah I also wanna upgrade the pad to the klymit hammock air mat but at $200 it's a hard no for right now. I want the underquilt because of the wind on the sides I've noticed it's only when you get heavy winds and don't have proper coverage you feel the cold. Also looking into a bigger tarp. Ik the weight is going to be an issue but sleep is pretty important
I have a cheaper inflatable mattress and don’t notice a huge difference between the thin iso mat and it. But the inflatable is much easier to pack. I broke down and bought the Warbonnet traveler hammock. Not one of their fancy models but it is a double layer hammock, and it is way easier to sleep sliding that may between the layers because it stays put. Might can look into that as an option before you spend the big money on the klymit pad.
Ok, I guess I’ll be the movie guy, it’s from Batman Jack nicklson says this to everyone before he kills them. It is still my favorite of the Batman series
So I have sit and thought on this for a while and can’t come up with anything other than a waterproof shelter and increases the temperature rating of the sleep system. Curious to hear your other purpose, so please let us know
@@TheCraftyCrowShow We had a similar type of bag cover on the sleeping bags when I was in the Army. It was made of a light tarp material . The newer system that you have is a much better one. Im sure it serves a duel purpose as well . Duel purpose in combat equipment is a force multiplier. This equipment is a great idea for those who prep for whats coming down the road at us all. Every one in your family needs one.
@@lewiskevin1 I agree it’s definitely a multi-purpose item for sure. And it being military, it’s made to last even if it’s being abused. I’m not sure how old that old military mummy bag is that I have, but it’s still in great shape after years of use.
Liked the video. I’ve been in the Army since 1994. In the reserves now. The MSS is far superior coming from the days of a sleeping bag wool blanket and a shelter half. When we go to the field we have the Litefighter tent which is okay but not a four season tent. You can buy an add on that will winterize it. I still carry the Bivy cover as I can throw my ruck, assault pack and boots inside and it is completely waterproof. Mainly because the tent can’t hold the stuff in it. If you haven’t tried the Litefighter tent, you should.
The Bivy and 1 (yes only ONE because you will HATE carrying it) are a great budget sleep system. I still have 2 and I’ll never get rid of them. Right now they are relegated to my boys until they move on to something nicer when they get older. I have slept all the way down to 8degF in the bivy and black bag with an inflatable sleeping pad and my winter cloth layers. GTG. The biggest drawback is it’s heavy and bulky. That system took up most of my backpack but it did it’s job and at the time it was all I had to not freeze at those temps. Love these! Now I use the snugpak SF bivy, SF1 bag (similar to the patrol bag but lighter/warmer, TS1 liner and a Hyke & Byke center zip down bag to match. That whole system weighs less than the MSS with the same philosophy of use. I have never used it all together, rather, I mix and match what I need depending on the worst case conditions I expect. Cheers! 🤙🏽
Amazon or eBay are two sites you can look for them. I bought this one from a store I found just by doing a google search. I’m sure there are many places out there, just gotta shop around for a good price. And I don’t know for sure, but I would think a lot of them would import to Mexico
A few caveats from a U.S. Army officer who's slept everywhere from Fort Bragg, NC to Fort Irwin, CA to Iraq and back in the last 20+ years: 1.) There is a not-shown green stuff sack for the summer-weight patrol sleeping bag as well. 2.) There is a compressible pillow (cameo colored or blue/green pattern) available. 3.) Get the poncho liner. Not the "new" one, but the old cameo one. Get four or five. These heavily-knit sheets with shoelaces on each corner are more like thin quilts, and when used as a bottom bedsheet on a cot or air mattress lets you use either sleeping bag on top as a quilt with a footbox. When used with the entire three-piece sleep system, the poncho liner adds about another 10 degrees F of warmth, and slides around so you can use it to keep your neck warm, etc. They also make great quilt top covers for beds at home. The sleep system was U.S. Marines before it was U.S. Army, which explains some differences in colors on the Internet.
That’s some great info, thank you. Got a few military guys at work that bring their poncho liners as blankets and still swear by them. I have also thought about using one of the bags as a top quilt for my hammock camping. But I need to find me a poncho liner or two, just because I’ve heard such good things about them
I got the two bags I need the bivy and the stuff sack then ill have it all just can't find the bivy in good condition and in woodland camouflage but I'll find it one day but the one I really want is the sleeping bag and bivy that was used in 1978 all I see is the bivy
They go for $200 in Canada. I picked up just the green patrol bag for $40 at surplus store, and recently another one for $8.99 at Value Village. Both patrol bags look brand new, no tears, no markings. If you are like me and own two patrol bags, they will work together. If you own all three, then you have more temp options: green or green+green, or green+black. Any idea what insulation is used in them? I got Gen III level 7 pants for cheap just because the army changed the insulation they use in it. I have a Canadian Army bivy but would rather have the USA ones as they are better designed than the simple envelope design of the Canadian ones.
Awesome deals on those patrol bags. I honestly have no idea what the insulation is in them, but if I find out I’ll let you know. Or maybe someone here will be able to tell us
I bought mine a few years ago. It had only been used on one outing in Texas. The guy that sold mine to me (on eBay) bought five for his family. He said that his family didn't like the idea of feeling like they were sleeping in coffins. So after I bought it the guy refunded me $10 because he couldn't find the compression bag and I got the entire system for $117 including shipping. But he bought them brand new. Could had I afforded more than one bag at the time, I would have bought 2 or 3. But turned out the guy looked everywhere but in the boxes for the compression bags. It would have been $127. So I got a steal at nearly $120 for practically a brand new sleep system. I added a fleece liner and a liner that's like a sheet, sewn 3/4 of the way around looks like a rectangle sleeping bag. But thinking about taking the stitchings out and sewing it into the fleece liner. So it keeps everything clean... And I bought a refurbished Klymit memory foam camp pillow, to add to my sleep system. It really was a great investment on my part...
Nooooo, not light at all. The entire setup is probably around 10-12 pounds. It would definitely take care of you with the weather starting to turn colder and being unpredictable this time of year, but it definitely isn’t light if your planning on hiking. But if your fit enough and that weight don’t scare you for that big of a hike, then I don’t think you will regret having what it offers.
Not totally sure on the measurements, but I’m 5’11 and 380 lbs. it’s kinda tight, but still works. But I think I’m pushing the max comfortable level. Hope that helps
Not that I’m aware of. I think it’s a “one size fits most” kinda deal. I’m 6’ 0, and fits pretty well. You might have enough room to get in there. Hopefully someone your height can comment and let you know for sure though
Lol, there wasn’t any drive ins close to me when it came out or I probably would have too. Loved that movie though. Watched it I don’t know how many times on VHS
Just a warning to anyone who has not used a bivy before. your body produces a HUGE amount of moisture as you sleep. its unreal. If its raining and you have to close yourself in. there is NO amount of ventilation that will pull out all the moisture you produce and just the amount of moisture from your breathing will actually turn the dome over your face into a terrarium. It will RAIN inside your bivy from the moisture coming out of your lungs. thats ok if you can dry all your things the next day. I once was caught in a rain storm that lasted 4 days. I didnt have a way to dry out my sleep system. so good fabric can be wet and still retain heat. So for a night my bed was soaked, I was warm and wet. it was a bad nights sleep but I was able to sleep and I avoided hypothermia easily. just sucked. so in good weather I love sleeping outside. no tent. just my bag. In bad weather, a bit of rain, kinda cold, be away from services for a week. you need a tent. Hands down.
perhaps for you and the climate you are in that works for you. glad to hear it. yet as anyone who has ever slept in a car can tell you, the body puts out a HUGE amount of moisture and a bivy sack will trap that and you will get wet. @@Ukraineaissance2014
I would advise to just search around to find the best deal. You might get lucky and find a gently used one off eBay for way cheaper than one from a store.
Midwayusa sells a in home copy that is pretty close to original. It’s new and I’d say 90 percent of the original ones quality. They sell for 200 and often will go on sale for 150. I own both the midway and I have a new unissued one that I’m sure I paid 350 for back In the day. The midway one is nice but yea it made in China 🇨🇳
Great video brother. I got my system for $90. I actually set mine up in a different configuration. I go patrol 1st, heavy bag 2nd then Gortex cover. Dress it up just like layering my clothes. Lighter layers closest to my body then work my way out. Works for me. Never hurts to invest in a REALLY GREAT PENDLETON WOOL BLANKET. Bought a queen size chief Joseph pattern Pendleton blanket. My wife guards that one but talk about WARM. You could sleep in Antarctica with that thing.
Pretty good logic on that. I honestly didn’t know which bag went first and just guessed…lol. And I would love to get a big Pendleton blanket. Expensive, but well worth it in the long run
You look like you have a large upper body. I'm about your age, and of course I know the quote. I want to buy one of these, but I'm a former powerlifter. I'm only 6' tall, but I have a giant rib cage. I wear a size 48 jacket. I tried on the largest mummy bag at REI, and I couldn't fit in it. My upper body is about 60" in circumference. Will I be able to fit in the whole system when it's all put together, or will I not be able to move my arms?
A minor mistake people make is the bag orientation. the intermediate/Winter bag goes inside the patrol bag, not the other way around. The people who claim getting cold at 30 degrees I lay you 10 to 1 are laying on cold steel of a vehicle with wind freezing said steel and or have their bags layered improperly....or are just on the ground using no pad. I don't care how cold you sleep, there is no way in HELL this system will fail at 30 degrees without user error. Maybe if you strip first?🤣
-2 in celsius looks a little bit not like a test temperature. SImple Alexika Tundra sleeping bag allow me to sleep in comfort - 12 celsius(inside tent, but with no special clothes). Its intresting to test MSS in Russian winter, but unfortunately it's not an option to buy it on the e-bay or amazon with shipping to Moscow right now.
Agreed that the temp was not the lowest, but that is the average temp in winter for my area. I wish you were able to get one to try in the Russian winter, because that’s a true cold weather test we would all like to see! If you could stay warm there, you could stay warm anywhere
Yes if you have all 3 bags together AND you're in the military extreme cold weather clothing system. These are all survival ratings so whatever the rating, add about 20 degrees to find the comfort rated temp.
Ahhhh, hasn’t thought about the clothing that’s supposed to go with it. But a big focus I have this year is trying to dial in my cold weather clothing. So far though, this system has worked exactly like I hoped it would.
Sorry it took so long to reply. I just measured my chest and it’s around 56, and my belly is probably 58 at the largest point. The individual bags aren’t bad by themselves, but once you put the whole system together it gets a little tight. Not uncomfortable tight, but still a bit snug after I get my arms tucked in. It might be good to try and find one you can try out first, just to be safe. Hope that helps though
I had one of those old M 1949’s for years. The MSS seems to have a little more room than the 1949’s do to me. So if you can fit in one of those, you should be good. MSS is a side zip, and I wish it had the front zip like the 1949. If you can only get one bag out if the MSS, I’d get the black one. Cold weather bag with the most room
@@TheCraftyCrowShow Good info. Thanks. I doubt I would ever need the whole system, but I thought one bag plus the bivy, to be on the safe side. Is the intermediate bag (black bag) plus bivy the same as black bag alone? Is bivy the limiting bag? Or just all the layers inside the bivy? I guess field bag is smallest, then intermediate then bivy? So maybe skip the field bag? Thanks again
I think it would be fair to say they go from a littke smaller to a little bigger. And the thickness of the bags when all together is definitely one of the limiting factors. Getting the intermediate bag and the bivy would probably be your best bet. If I hadn’t got the opportunity to get the entire set, that’s the route I would have went too
Used this system when I was living off my motorcycle.

Great review! Completely agree on the value for the price and the awesomeness of the system. Love the name Crafty Crow, I feel that spirit animal as well. Cool serendipity. Just got this bag system and cant wait to try it this weekend.
Read the tags, they state temp ratings. Green bag is 30 degrees, the black bag combo with clothing is -50.

Thanks man. And I’m with you on the M1949. That was my go-to bag ever since the Boy Scout days, and kept me warm many nights
They're getting harder to find these days, because the government sent a bunch of them to Ukraine. I live in an area without a lot of military surplus stores.
Great video. Thanks for sharing.
I have to say the army sleep system is one of the things they got right. And the reference is from Batman
Batman, exactly 👍. Glad others remember the best Batman movie
Looking to see who knew lol . Tim burton one
😂
Just my 2c
Had a old surplus down filled mummy bag years ago. Warmest bag I ever had.The new system is great. Good advice and video.
Thanks. I’ve still got one of the old mummy bags like you have, and was always my go to bag since scouts. Not sure which one I like better, but this one is definitely more versatile

You can never miss with a Michael Keaton and Jack Nicholson Batman reference.
I have 3 MSS’s, Used them for 7 years in the army. They’re heavy but bullet proof.
Lol I just ran across this video and the intro had me rolling... Gained a follower lol
I've used my MSS for about the past 5 years. It's a great set of bags. I use it year-round and generally split it according to the weather. A little on the heavy side especially for a winter camp.
Do you have to put a tarp over yourself when it rains?
Lowest bidder still has to meet military specs. Thanks for your video. Will be getting this system next month.
Great review

@TheCraftyCrowShow yeah I have the double layer just don't have a blow up mat...I'll see if I can borrow a buddies to test it out.
That double layer helped me a lot, so that’s awesome you have one. Before that, I couldn’t keep anything under me….lol
I would also encourage you to take a look at the CARINTHIA DEFENCE 4 SLEEPING BAG. Military grade and ready for just about any weather.
Use you Bovey the patrol bag and a woobie and you can get down into the 30s and still stay pretty light

Great system. The BIVY has another purpose. Can you guess what it is ?
So I have sit and thought on this for a while and can’t come up with anything other than a waterproof shelter and increases the temperature rating of the sleep system. Curious to hear your other purpose, so please let us know
@@TheCraftyCrowShow Unfortunately...... a body bag.
@@lewiskevin1 I would have never guessed that one. How in the world did you find out that use?
I have heard some things about it, but haven’t researched it yet. Might look into it though. Thanks for your input and for your service
I recently purchased the Litefighter 2 tent and the cold weather kit option and I'm really enjoying it so far. It's a very well-made tent.
Cheers! 🤙🏽
This an awesome sleeping sistem, where can I buy a sistem like this? and is it possible to buy it in Mexico or import it, Greetings, great video
Amazon or eBay are two sites you can look for them. I bought this one from a store I found just by doing a google search. I’m sure there are many places out there, just gotta shop around for a good price. And I don’t know for sure, but I would think a lot of them would import to Mexico
A few caveats from a U.S. Army officer who's slept everywhere from Fort Bragg, NC to Fort Irwin, CA to Iraq and back in the last 20+ years:
1.) There is a not-shown green stuff sack for the summer-weight patrol sleeping bag as well.

Thank you. Hope it helped answer any questions you might have had
Definitely was a good investment at that price! And sounds like you have a great setup going
batman. i have a 30 day hike coming. Is it lite and will this work...
Im a big guy....will this system suit bigger persons? What is the girth measurement?
Not totally sure on the measurements, but I’m 5’11 and 380 lbs. it’s kinda tight, but still works. But I think I’m pushing the max comfortable level. Hope that helps
Do they make a long size? The last military bag I bought was too short, I’m 6’3.
Not that I’m aware of. I think it’s a “one size fits most” kinda deal. I’m 6’ 0, and fits pretty well. You might have enough room to get in there. Hopefully someone your height can comment and let you know for sure though
Jack Nicholson... Batman great movie I seen it at the drive in lol wow I'm old

Could you provide the link to this sleep system?
Hands down.
I just use a goretex bivvy bag, and the bivvy bag in this video is goretex. Problem solved
perhaps for you and the climate you are in that works for you. glad to hear it. yet as anyone who has ever slept in a car can tell you, the body puts out a HUGE amount of moisture and a bivy sack will trap that and you will get wet. @@Ukraineaissance2014

Hi m8 where to buy it
I would advise to just search around to find the best deal.

Ok. I'm fat. About 60" in chest and belly. How snug is this bag?
Sorry it took so long to reply. I just measured my chest and it’s around 56, and my belly is probably 58 at the largest point. The individual bags aren’t bad by themselves, but once you put the whole system together it gets a little tight. Not uncomfortable tight, but still a bit snug after I get my arms tucked in. It might be good to try and find one you can try out first, just to be safe. Hope that helps though
@@TheCraftyCrowShow thanks for the reply. Sounds like my old M 1949. Pretty snug for a fat guy. Doable. If you aren't claustrophobic..
