    Painter’s Tape
    Steps:
    1. Only use painter’s tape if it’s really needed. If you plan to paint the whole room, it may not be necessary. Start with the ceiling and work your way down. With a careful hand, you can cleanly paint an entire room without risking peeling any of the paint off with tape.
    2. Don’t use masking tape in place of painter’s tape. It has a high adhesion, which can peel off or chip some of the surface being protected.
    3. Read the labels on the tape to determine which one will work best for your project based on the following guidelines:
    a. Use very high adhesion tape for exterior projects
    b. Use medium adhesion tape for interior projects that will require a longer period of time to complete.
    c. Use light adhesion for interior projects with delicate surfaces (ex: wallpaper) or that will only need to be up for a day or two. Light adhesion tape is least likely to damage the surface underneath, so aim to use that kind as much as possible.
    4. The different colors of painter’s tape only indicate which manufacturer they belong to and don’t necessarily have different purposes.
    5. To apply the tape, use long sections of tape at a time, at least 18”. Press hard against the edge being protected to ensure no paint can slip underneath the tape, but don’t press all the tape down on the surface if you don’t have to.
    6. When painting, paint just as carefully as you would if there were no tape at all. The tape is really just meant to act as extra insurance.
    7. As soon as the paint is dry, remove the tape. Peel off one corner and pull the tape away from the wall at roughly a 45 degree angle to prevent damage to the surface.
    Resources:
Mauro demonstrated a variety of different painter’s tapes. He suggests simply reading the label of the tape to see where each tape is best used. The color of the tape varies by manufacturer, not by application.
Each of the tapes Mauro demonstrated can be found at home centers and painting supply stores.

Y`all in the comments are so argumentative I swear you would debate whether or not water is wet..
Video offered the typical home owner enough insight to take it as is or dig further. As has always been ToH's style. Especially in the context of 4 minutes.
For god's sake people it's just tape!...

I wish he'd talk about the stuff he used in that other video. The silicone or what ever masking he used on the lady's window. You know, the stuff that he brushed on?

I like using painters tape. I’m not a professional painter so of course my brush skills won’t match Mario’s or anyone who does painting for a living. But I do find taping relaxing, as long as it’s not against a curved surface.
And not that I’m a sloppy painter, but I like to take my time with the taping and then just get the paint on and pull the tape off after about 5 minutes. I’ve had good results so far doing it that way.
As for the kind of tape doesn’t really matter. I’ll use generic blue tape, branded blue tape or the green frog tape, which is alright. Hey, I’ve seen people use duct tape as masking so at least I’m not that guy 🤣

Do you need to clean the surface before you apply painters tape for instance if I'm going to mask and not paint the baseboard do I need to clean the baseboard from dust or dirt before I applied the tape

    • @Guardducks
      @Guardducks 5 лет назад +4

Yes, tape will not stick to dirt or dust and then your paint will bleed onto your baseboards. Trust me been there done that , found out the hard way.

Weird thing about tape is I work painting new houses and old houses and in both we use the cheap masking tape I stead of the others even in the long work projects since no matter what we always have to retouch anything we tape

    • @Melody615199999
      @Melody615199999 5 лет назад

That's ("retouch everything") because you're using the wrong tape you dumba*s.

Yellow frog tape is by far the best I have ever used. Also the most expensive. If it was cheaper I would only ever use it.

The Blue tape is supposed to be the best. I used the blue tape when I was painting walls and not the trim. I put it on and went back and pressed it all down a second time to ensure adhesion and prevent paint bleeding through. The paint bled through in spots. I am convinced that painters tape does not work.

Next time, try the green frog tape. I stopped using blue because I had so many failed projects with it in the past.

Consumer Reports says that there is a difference. The Frog Tape Delicate Surface is the winner.

Consumer Reports are as old and out of touch as a house land line.

    • @mhc121

Well land lines are more reliable and has a clearer reception so...
Just because something is old and out of touch does not mean it's useless.

Frog tape looks like their isn’t much on the roll but it goes very far.

  • @mezmez5799

I have used painters tape and encountered misery with it more often than not. It doesn't seem to matter if it's cheap or the most expensive roll on the shelf, no matter how carefully you apply and press down, I still have bleed through. I'd love to do striped walls but I can't trust any tape won't bleed based on so many failures of these products. So, what's the "secret" or tip that the promo advertised? The quality of these videos seem to be going downhill.

The surface has to be very clean and smooth and the tape pressed down very well to avoid problems. Or use this trick: ruclips.net/video/Tut4V2dC3W0/видео.html

I'm a professional painter with over 12 years of experience. I use duct tape for most masking purposes. Don't let the painting industrial complex fool you into buying anything else for masking.

    • @Guardducks

Steve Hasebroock he says they are all the same just different makers. True and false. Different makers yes, but you have interior and exterior and tape for freshly painted walls.

Its not just adhesion differences. I assume the green tape is Frog tape. Frog tape has chemicals in the glue that reacts to the water in latex paint and quickly forms a barrier and the edge along with the adhesion. While no tape is perfect, frog does outperform other tapes in terms of the quality of the clean line in my opinion, and its not cheap. I own rental property so wear many hats so I don't just paint all day, if I did I am sure I would gain the skill to paint a perfectly straight line the pros. Instead I use tape (Frog) and get GREAT straight lines. Important to make sure any tape is down firm at the line. This episode was way to brief and like other comments did NOT provide good detail.

Totally agree. Frog tape lines are much cleaner in my experience.

Uhhhh....different colors DO indicate different uses and different adhesion grades. It's not just a matter of different manufacturers.

Different tape colors DO indicate what they do and what they can be used for. Not just different manufacturing. This is all wrong. Why mislead people who aren't in the field?
