I worked as a pro painter and thought it was crazy to spend $15 for a 2 1/2" angled soft bristle brush but it lasted 7 years and got better with age. It would have lasted longer but it disappeared!
This Old House I definitely prefer just cheap wire brushes to the brush Combs most of them have a wire brush as well but it seems like the wire brushes just cleaned the bristles better for me I'm pretty rough on the brushes as well so they get abused and as long as I clean them myself they're still good the next time
That's why I always use water based paints. Just soap and water. Fill a bucket with some soap and water, and swish around for a minute or 2. Throw the water out, I throw the water in my grass. I do the same thing a couple more time until the water is running clear dripping of the brush.
Let me tell you. I bought a set of Purdy brushes 3 sizes 22 years ago and they are the best homeowner's tool I ever bought . The bristles are still straight and same quality as when I bought them and the brass middle piece is still in pristine shape. The wood handle has paint leftover from the 500 times I used them but who cares. Every time I take them out to paint I smile. Just buy Purdy paintbrushes and they will last forever. I believe I paid $30 for a set of 3 sizes. Purdy brushes are the best hands down. Even the paint cleans out easily with water. Oil paint you will need to clean with mineral spirits or thinner. The bristles on the brush never fall out or weaken with use. Incredible brushes.
I have a few key brushes that are good quality for years. I clean them well each time I use them. In the long it cost more to purchase cheap brushes then good quality ones.
Are hitech, PX, tusa, painters helper, proven (something, forgot the name) paint brush and rollers any good? The sell those brands(along with some cheap ones, like trisonic, which are crap)for like under 5 bucks.
Use just rinse under a faucet until the water is clear and clean in the brush, and bang the on an edge to shake the excess water and hang them to dry. With rollers, you wash them with water until and stroke them with your hand and brush to make sure to remove all the paint, and the you can hang them from a wire to dry. Cleaning thoroughly is the most important part of protecting your equipment, and you don't want buy this stuff over and over again.
To clean a brush grab some Gojo and some Murphy's Oil soap. Rinse the brush and add some Gojo. Grab the tips of the bristles firmly in one hand and rotate the brush as if you were painting a circle. This works the pumice cleaner into the bristles. Rotate a dozen times and rinse. Spray some Murphy's on the bristles. Repeat the the grab and rotate for a dozen times. Rinse. Repeat this until the water runs clean. With the gojo use your fingernail to scrap any excess dried boogery paint prior to the grab and rotate. A Purdy brush can last nearly a decade using this cleaning technique. I've been painting for 20 years and it is very effective. For non-synthetic bristles you can ressurect some really bad brushes by putting them in a a mason jar filled with Simple Green and leave them overnight to soak. In short: A pumice cleaner, Murphy's Oil Soap, and Simple Green will keep a well made brush in action easily over a decade.
You definitely should have talked about brush maintenance when I use latex paint or any kind of water soluble paint I use a bucket of water to rinse the brush and do not rinse with the hose or run it under the faucet. change the water until it's clear and then wire brush any paint left on the bristles. You don't need to fill the bucket completely about a quarter full is plenty you would think that feeling a bucket uses more water but it actually is a lot less I usually dump it in a hole in the yard if it's got a lot of paint if not I just dump it on the ground doesn't seem to bother anyting. Check deep between the bristles to see if there is any paint left if you rinse it with a hose or under a faucet you may think it is clean it's not but if you immerse it in water you will easily see a milky change to the water or solvent . you shouldn't leave the paint brush in water for extended periods of time if you're using an oil or other based paint I pour the solvent into a small container just big enough to fit the brush in and rinse until clear solvents like paint thinner and lacquer thinner or acetone remove paint a lot easier than water so you don't need to use as much brush any excess paint off the bristles with wire brush always cover their bristles afterwards with the original cover. If you don't have the original cover make one out of paper or cardboard it just helps the bristle stay straight. If you do that your brushes will last forever I have had them for years and I use and abuse them. Also I always prefer Square tip and as wide a brush as I can get it just holds more paint and covers better.
I use a high quality brush for painting walls and making look neat. I use a cheap one for roof coating and dirty jobs and throw them away when I'm done. I like Wooster, but my stepdad like Purdy. They are both great brushes. My roller are usually a purdy or woodster also. Blue and purple in the paint section. Clean up use for a life time almost, and never throw anything away that is still good.
I am panting someone’s whole house , I not sure if I should just get a 4 inch brush and do the walls 1 brush the whole job , save all the money and I will dip the brush in the can . No tray
Hey guys! Your missing out on this new innovative paint brush called the gooseneck! This is the only brush you will need to paint! Stop wasting time with all these other brushes! This brush will take care of you!
Would be nice to see a video explaining to all viewers the benefits using this new innovative super light paint brush extender. 2 1/2 Richard gooseneck flexible paint brush extension! Cheers! I really liked that liquid tape on the inside window. Clean finish. First time I see this!
Clean your brushes with a wire brush and some soapy water after each use and they will last for years. It doesn’t hurt to have a brush spinner to spin out the excess water, but you can spin them by hand if you know how. I know guys that smack them out on their boot tips but that will loosen the Ferrell’s after a while.
Well I don't get it---this guy says using the natural hair brush in water based latex paint will not harm the brush. In THIS OLD HOUSE video the pro says using a natural hair brush in water base paint will RUIN IT--.52 Second mark: ruclips.net/video/NHNkHZetbOA/видео.html
Not helpful, he should have went over soft vs. firm. And going over exterior, vs. interior, then what to use to paint a door vs. painting around a door, trim etc.
Exactly the opposite. A China Bristle or synthetic bristle brush is much easier to clean with turps or mineral spirits than trying to clean a brush used for latex. Also, it's knowing when to clean a brush during the work day.
as a latin myself I'm kind of bothered by the rough accent of Mauro and his difficulty with his communication skills, good thing there's Kevin to guide the situation, Still very informative tho.
I bought an expensive one before and I absolutely loved it. You can wash it so many times and it still holds up. Def worth it
I worked as a pro painter and thought it was crazy to spend $15 for a 2 1/2" angled soft bristle brush but it lasted 7 years and got better with age. It would have lasted longer but it disappeared!
Pt 2, how to properly clean them? Thx
Bob Lablah I think he was just trying to funny, dude
Rinse them out with warm water throughly and use wire brush to clean dry paint out
Wire brushes are no good. Try a brush comb instead! Also we are doing a segment on this soon so tune in/check back here in a few weeks.

Just the video I was looking for. Thank you guys.
What about brushes that are recommended for "stain". What is the difference between a brush used for staining and one used for painting?
Hi, most black hair paint brush as applying paint and starting to paint walls or wood. Hair seems to comes out while painting

I've used china bristle brushes many times with latex paint with non-disastrous results. Works just fine. What are they trying to say?
china sucks basically! lol
