- When two players set out on their NBA journeys at the same time, their narratives have a way of remaining entwined well after their rookie seasons have passed. Victor Wembanyama of the San Antonio Spurs and Chet Holmgren of the Oklahoma City Thunder are no ordinary rookies, both because of their phenomenal physical measurements and because of their immense feel for the game and talent to play it. Literally came here to say the exact same thing. I was so not ready to hear his voice, but as the tears well up, I am grateful to have ever heard such a special person to begin with. To this day, I still remember hearing his last pod on NBA University with J. Kyle Mann. Wow, thank you for that.

man I miss Tjarks. I listened to him on the pods just since lockdown started, and I hadn’t even been listening for that long when I heard the news. He had not only some of the best analysis but an amazing sense of humor and a really funny, distinct voice. RIP
as a french dude, i've watched a looot of US content around wemby and chet, and this one clearly stands out. Perfect nuancing of their statlines given their two teams, how they differently score and impact ball games, good takes on what they can evolve as players and a most importantly a deep appreciation of those two future/actual faces of league. great video thanks

I have a feeling seeing Chet Holmgren as a spurs fan is going to feel a lot like seeing dirk back in the 2000s. I’m gonna hate his guts… but respect his game… when he retires… lol
Chet is definitely amazing but he is almost 2 years older than Wemby. Also all Wemby's life changed during the draft , he has to adapt to a new team, new country, new culture, new basketball and he is doing more than all right. Wemby has a really good mental strength. We will have good years watching them playing against each other.

I love Wemby but I think the media coverage of him compared to Chet’s has been a bit biased due to Wemby’s game being more colorful lol. Fair enough, but what gets lost in all this is how GOOD Chet also is! I think this post does justice to both players without being too much bias 😂. The crazy thing is, Wemby has more obvious room to grow, and more time to grow as well. He's spotting Chet a whopping twenty months and an entire year around an NBA team, and he's still basically tied with him in impact metrics. This is the difference between an All-NBA fixture and a perennial MVP candidate.
Why do people think Chet being so injured that he had to sit out a year is somehow a benefit?
5:46 This is the underrated piece of his game, as you said. It can be deceptive because of his fluidity and abruptness, this is the freakiest thing I've seen him do. He's moving like Steph curry off the ball, but with the goat catch radius. It's going to be over once he dials in the decisions and chemistry with his teammates.

Every fan needs to be treating the basketball gods right because if these two have long, healthy careers we could legitimately be looking at the next great individual rivalry in league history. They both have the potential to be that good, and they clearly don’t like each other all that much. There are so many ifs, but what started as tongue-in-cheek hyperbole now feels possible: they could be the next Magic v Bird, the next Wilt v Russel.

Chet and Wemby have similar builds but their plays are vastly different. Chet is spreading the floor and hunting for mismatch. Vic is scratching and crawling in the paint to position himself and attack whoever it is in front of him.

Maybe you're right, but I can't help to imagine what Wemby would be doing if he was on that Thunder team instead of Chet -- and I can't in good conscious say that it wouldn't be drastically better then what Chet is doing
I think the year off Chet took with NBA shooting coaches is really the only difference in the now vs rebuilt decision. I'm pretty confident that Wemby's shooting is going to take a huge leap in year two after a full year of NBA coaching -- which makes Wemby the clear better player

@letanefonotiiii4287 You don't have to imagine. Chet has significantly elevated the competitiveness of OKC this year. They are on track for ~ +17 win record over last season, which many believed was a year they over-achieved. Whereas, San Antonio are somehow even worse than they were last year, where they were already one of the worst teams in the league, despite the presence of Wemby.
Chet impacts the floor simply by his gravity as a spacer, even without the ball in his hands, which in turn elevates the play of his team mates. Chet is the more complete player at this moment. Not everything is about numbers, but of course some numbers matter more than others.
But Wemby, while still very raw, has more than demonstrated that the hype was real.
