There's a cut scene where Zoe gives a beautiful but heartbreaking explanation why Mal named their ship after the worst experience of their lives. "Once you've been in Serenity you never leave. You just learn how to live there." Obviously referring to the PTSD of the war but also how being aboard the Serenity has helped them make new lives from the wreckage of the past.
I think one of my favourite things that firefly did was creating really interesting, scary villains that are each unique and memorable. The Reavers, the blue hands, Niska, all terrifying in their own way and each has a very different vibe from the others. Not a lot of shows can pull that off.

Episodes 11, 12, and 13 were not aired until the Sci-fi Channel brought the series to the United Kingdom, where they aired all 14 episodes in the correct sequence."
I love the way Kaylee is more worried about getting yelled at than she is at getting killed disarming the trap. Unauthorised salvage is illegal but not morally wrong. On the frontier life is tough so they take every opportunity they can.
The thing I love about Jayne is that, while his attitude is bad, the show consistently portrays him as very competent at his job. He knows his way around a ship and a gun, and while Malcolm might not trust his motivations, there’s no question that Jayne is good at his job and adds value to a crew anyway.
One thing to say about Wash in the Interview is that essentially he told the alliance about as much useful information as Zoey did. Just in a different way.
That's one thing about the reavers that was great writing is they've been mentioned twice now. We're basically terrified of them but all this has been done without ever showing one.

@@funnylilgalreacts one of the things you'll notice is that Jayne is always touching things, which was apparently an acting choice made by Adam Baldwin.

This is one of the TV Shows where the actors could gel/have report with each other and get past the awkwardness in 1st seasons of other TV shows. It was a real shame Fox cancelled it before people caught on. Thank you again for reacting to this!!
Yes thank you. Out of all the reactors that have watched Firefly I think you got to be the only one that has the clip of Kaylee telling the officer why his ship is more junk then Serenity.
Actually you seem to get away with showing a lot more of your reactions to both important and subtle moments in the show. I'm really enjoying that, but also concerned that you might get a copyright strike, Fox still being Fox.
Which is part of what makes him terrifying, he's got this sweet, paternal, little old man vibe, the sort who'd sing you songs in Polish until you fell asleep, but then you start listening to what he's saying and you feel that he means it and you suddenly that sweet little old man is some kind of horrific monster.
They managed to do horror so well with so little. Also Wash describing his favourite parts of Zoe is still hilarious, like how did they even get to that topic?
I can say this now because Angela has already seen all the episodes, but Alan Tyduk was trying to get the actor playing the interviewer to corpse. There is an extended scene/blooper in which he says more and more outrageous things, until the actor breaks and laughs.
Mal is Inara’s landlord essentially. She’s renting one of Serenity’s shuttles so she can make her business mobile. The servant thing was a one-off fake out. But you’ll notice other mentions of forms of slavery floating around so it wasn’t that far-fetched of a lie. The first episode lighting of Simon was definitely on purpose. It adds to the red herring-ness of his character when they’re trying to figure out the mole on board.
A tiny thing I noticed that I've never seen anybody comment on was the framing of that first meeting. When Kaylee introduces Simon, the shot shows Mal and him on the opposite extremes of the screen, implying how great the distance is between what types of people/character they are, and possibly enemies. The audience is supposed to see the great divide, the great difference between them.
@@sld1776 Exactly. They allow indentured servitude and slavery, and don't really care about living conditions on the outback moons. They want the power of an "Alliance" without the responsibility.
Yeah, Jane is generally fearless in the face of any danger. But every time the Reavers are mentioned he becomes visibly terrified. It's an effective way to communicate how horrifying they are, showing that the toughest guy on the ship is scared shitless of them. (Kind of like how every time they needed to show that a baddie was strong in Star Trek TNG, they'd just have them kick Worf's ass. :P) Also, the Reavers are definitely human beings. No one is really sure of their origins, but they appear to be early colonists who went insane in the isolation of space and started committing atrocities. How they can have a functioning society or even run a spaceship, I have no idea. But they do somehow. As for why Mal knows a lot about Reavers, I assume that he's dealt with them before, or at least heard stories or witnessed their aftermath. He's been flying for a good while now, so he's already seen plenty of stuff I'm sure. Hey Angela, have you ever considered reacting to Farscape? It's another sci-fi show from around this same time. It's EXTREMELY weird, and kind of slow at the beginning, but it becomes absolutely great, and one of the best sci-fi shows ever. Just curious!
The pilot episode was reshot. Joss Whedon replaced the original Inara and Fox wanted the tone to be lighten up. So you noticed the changes. The entire interrogation scene with Wash (Alan Tyduk) was entirely improved. The entire scene was released on the blooper segment on the DVD set. Totally hilarious. Definitely worth the watch.
Mal is a pirate with a heart of gold, Jayne is first and foremost a mercenary. In the post series novels River loves the relationship Wash and Zoe, the love makes her feel good. The "reaver guy" in hiding reminded me of Newt in "Aliens "
Favourite quotes in this video; "If I mess up, it's not like you'll be able to yell at me." "May have been the losing side. Still not convinced it was the wrong one." "Fox were so stupid!" 😒
Standouts in this episode, for me: the interrogation (brilliant, the way they tell us so much about the characters just by the way they act in interrogation), River and Simon’s different reactions to being out in space, and Mal’s way of distracting most of the crew while they deal with the booby trap.
It's a good introduction to the characters. The whole episode is just pure world-building. The Alliance, the war, the reavers, and basically every character talks about their relationships and shows off their personalities.
That is good filmmaking... letting the viewer discover the truth, not just TELL them the truth... it connects the viewer to the scene, the characters, and the Story.
With each episode you will learn more about the members of the crew. The movie at the end wraps up some things but not all. I love this series and it sounds like you are becoming one of us. a "Browncoat".
Yeah, Mal is an awesome character. A little prickly, a big heart, and an impishly playful wink of the eye. So glad you are watching this, Angela, it’s totally your jam!!! Stay awesome!
My main issue is his communication problem that starts showing here. There was _zero_ need to get Simon anxious by not telling him about the plan to hide him and River. Out-of-character, the likely reason is fake drama, which is bad. In-character, the likely reason is that Mal doesn't like to be questioned on his, which is also bad. Either way, don't want to spoil anything, but this _will_ lead to a completely preventable _major_ problem at one point... Just telling someone about the plan instead of letting things escalate _really_ badly - and in that situation, it won't even "just" be Mal, but several others who could have communicated.
@@Wolf-ln1ml idk, fake drama (at least the one in that scene) is/can be pretty entertaining... why is it bad, again? ( Besides that being his name and all, as River already told us... ^^ )
@@irrelevant_noob I guess it can be entertaining, depending on what one expects... I've never seen Firefly as a show where I'd expect fake drama, so I don't find it one bit funny - and without any humour, it's just bad writing.
Mal being her servant was made up. It was the explanation for Mal and Zoe making up a story and being there in the first place. She needed to explain who they were and why they were lying without actually admitting to them being thieves.
Inara was totally making up a story to get Mal off the hook. Also funny Worldbuilding considering what he’d be doing to rack up a debt with a companion. They explain that the arrangement is mutually beneficial, giving Serenity more respectability while giving Inara freedom to travel.
@@shanegraham2500 Also as a companion she is a trained lier, trained to make you believe whatever you want to believe or whatever she wants you to believe.
I think the reference there was more to the common arrangement of indentured servitude for "common" people wishing to leave Europe for America during the Colonial period. Passage on a ship was ruinously expensive, so people without means would indenture themselves to established Colonials, usually for a period of 7 years after arrival. As you can imagine, this was not an arrangement without abuses, but for many, being indentured in the Colonies was the only alternative to prolonged starvation at home, if disease, mercenaries, being a Lord's unwilling cannon-fodder, or bandits didn't get you first. There's a lot of that sort of dynamic in the 'Verse, between the barely-subsisting low-tech outer worlds and the much wealthier and more sophisticated Core (don't think this is a spoiler of any kind; you kind of get the gist comparing Serenity's "tiny rust-bucket" appearance next to the massive and shiny Alliance cruiser. Plus, it's been mentioned and shown continuously. Interesting similarity to China's massive wealth inequality, amongst that of other places). Interesting take, thanks! It's possible that Mal's "servant" might have run-up debt to a Companion in trade, but I don't think any Companion would allow the issue to reach that extreme, and I'm not sure anyone else would believe that, either. Companions are like geishas or high-court mistresses; extremely well-trained in what they do, which is far more than only sex work. For example, much too savvy in business to allow the kind of situation you're suggesting.
Ah spooky season came early this year! 😈 They did a great job of making the Reavers terrifying without showing us a true Reavers yet. The survivor becoming one was scary enough. 😨
@@funnylilgalreacts Yeah, that was a major point for the writing team of the show. We see it a bit in the pilot episode, but basically they use a variation of "The Worf Effect", that being showing how dangerous the baddies are by seeing how they effect the tough guy on the team. In this case rather than physically beat Jayne like how Worf constantly got his ass kicked on Star Trek TNG, the mere *idea* of the Reavers is enough to terrify the man we have established doesn't scare easily. If any of the others are scared of something, that's kind of par for the course, but show Jayne or Zoe be scared of it and we know this threat is the real deal.
Monsters are always more effective in anticipation than execution. This is why Jaws is so great, we really dont see the shark at all for the first half of the movie...
@@Sillydogification It also worked really well for the first Friday The 13th movie. We didn’t get to see the killer until the very end of the movie, and then it turned out to be a little old lady who was totally insane.
Jayne is possibly one of the most complex characters of the bunch. I feel like he represents an unfiltered Mal. Most of what he expresses make sense. He hates Simon and River because their presence is a constant danger to the ship. Even Mal expresses frustration at times with the situation Simon has put them in, it's just that Mal is a good leader so he keeps his Jayne side in check.
I don't think Jayne's all that complex, really. He's a practical guy that doesn't think with his heart and doesn't think more than a few steps in front of him (if at all). I agree that Jayne hates Simon and River because they're a perceived danger to the ship. If Simon was paying good money to stay on Serenity, though, I think he wouldn't have a problem with them. To Jayne, I think every course of action is a simple risk vs. reward calculation, with emphasis on the immediate. He doesn't think far enough ahead to see that having an actual doctor on board could save his life someday - even if said doctor is yet another mouth to feed AND is also wanted by the Alliance. He just sees the immediate risks and no immediate reward, and deems Simon and River an unnecessary risk to the ship.
@@Tantalus010 100% agree.. jayne is a very straightforward egoistic dude.. he does what he thinks is best for him (short term).. not much complexity about him.. i still enjoy him as character, his assholery adds some tension to the crew and it would also be boring if everyone would be a noble good hearted goody two-shoes.. his behavior is always good for some head shaking, sometimes outright "disgust" and from time to time even for a good chuckle

I love watching you puzzle all this out. I really want to tell you all the things, but I figure you're going to get it as you go, same as the rest of us. This first episode was trying to misdirect you regarding Simon. Since we didn't know who might be trouble, they tricked us into mistrusting him so that we'd be blind-sided by the agent.
Loving your reactions to Firefly! Jayne is an awesome character, all uber-aggressive and in your face, and yet gets scared with reavers (which is totally understandable). Keep up the great videos!
I do love the fact that the Alliance is all wearing Starship Trooper armor. Always thought that was a funny little, "We have some money but, it was easier than making new uniforms for the show." vibe. XD Which they certainly fixed for the movie. God I love this show.
I remember re-watching The Expanse episode with the interrogation scene on the Donnager and being absolutely convinced that they’d cut out Shed’s scene. It was such an odd reversed déjà vu feeling. Like I could’ve sworn that I’ve seen Shed interrogated and him gushing about all manner of inappropriate topics. It wasn’t until I rewatched Firefly later that year that it struck me that what I thought was Shed’s interrogation scene was in fact Wash’s. My screwy brain had merged these two plotlines into one.
Jayne will always have that "love-hate" vibe but he will surprise you with his humanity at random times. Tom Scavo is how I will always know that actor. Of all the residents (in and around) Wisteria Lane, the Scavos were my favorite to watch.
This is one of many episodes that highlights the vast array of genres this show can handle. Last week we had a good old-fashioned train heist, this week it's a full on horror movie in space. It also does a great job of re-establishing the threat of both the Alliance and the Reavers, since during the initial broadcast they didn't have the pilot episode to serve that purpose. I'm loving your reactions so far, you provide such detailed analysis and it's clear that you're taking everything in. You've well and truly earned your brown coat.

I love watching new viewers puzzle over Jayne. There is a really really good reason why is is afraid at times. The "why" of Jayne will come, and it is amazing and heartrending and, in its way, quite beautiful. The answers also come with a very cunning hat.
I'm rewatching this show and then catching your reactions afterward as this just gives me an excuse to watch Firefly for the...I don't know-th time. The cast brought these characters to life and did such an amazing job with this show.
One thing a read a few years back that JW had planned but the show was cancelled. If you remember in the first episode when Serenity flew past their first reaver ship, they showed Inara open a box with a needle in it. Later in the series JW was gonna kill Inara off by having her eaten by reavers. The needle was full of poison. So when the reavers ate her they also would die. If Inara was going out she was taking reavers with her. Such a bad ass move. 👍🏻
Soon as you reach the point where you're incredibly angry that there isn't more of this series, you'll have earned your brown coat. Not sure if you're there yet, but you will be.
Enjoying your reactions! For those comparing Amos and Jayne: While both fit the broad trope as "the muscle" they are very different people. Amos is much more introspective and Jayne... the opposite. Jayne is a simple man while Amos is infinitely more complex. Jayne has way better unintentional one-liners. Amos has darker origins and lower humor quotient. Both great characters for very different reasons.
Mal is not indentured. He would never offer himself up like that. The doc had to learn how to suit up to go out in space. Great episode. Oh, that's what a reaver looks like. As we say here in Texas; Y'all be safe.
Great reaction. Glad to see you're really paying attention, remembering details, and connecting to this show in a big way. Very much looking forward to seeing what you think of where it goes from here.
Loved this show. Was at a con in Dallas with Nathan and Alan. Kid as if there was one show you could bring back what would it be. Could have heard a pin drop as they looked at each other.
As always, Angela, your reaction was so delightful! I think I said this when you were watching _The Expanse_ , but you're such an intelligent, intuitive, observant reactor! It's a pleasure to see you notice things that I didn't see for the first half dozen times... if I noticed them at all! Thanks for another enjoyable one! 😁
“Can Book keep a secret?” 😄😄😆😆😅😅😂😂😂🤣🤣🤣🤣. Oh man, I was taking a drink when you said that, nearly killed me. By the end of the series you’ll have a better idea why that’s so funny.
About the Reavers... If I remember correctly "They got to the edge of space and looked out into the vast emptiness beyond and were driven mad." I've kind of been obsessed with 'the edge of the universe' since then.
I completely forgot that this episode was next. I was thinking that the next episode was "Shindig" for some reason. You have some really good insights and theories about this series. I don't think answers can be given for most of your questions though. They'd be spoilers. I'll be waiting impatiently for the next Firefly reaction! I'm having a blast going along for the ride with you as you become a Browncoat. 😄
You picked up that River seems to have been able to hear the screams or whatever from the guys mind. Meaning she's likely picking up some background noise from everyone's mind all the time. When she was outside the airlock, in space, it was finally quiet.
The writing with this show is so exceptional that there continues to be unpredictable twists and turns throughout the entire season. In an interview I saw some years after the show aired, they said that Joss Whedon generally didn't like or allow spontaneity with the lines, but Wash's interview was pure off-the-cuff riffing that was so entertaining they decided to use it. And the actor playing the Alliance captain had a terrible time trying to keep a straight face through it.
yes, whedon is known for being very picky with lines. if he writes a contraction that's what he wants to hear and if he writes it without a contraction he doesn't want to hear one.
Inara just made up the story. Just like she said that Zoe ran off with Mal. Love the hat talk. Jayne wears many hats. Jayne being afraid is a method that shows the threat is very bad. This was mentioned in the commentary. I knew the actor from Desperate Housewives. I like the interrogation scene. It really is a good way to build characters. When the interrogation scene happens in The Expanse on the Donnanger, it really reminded me of this episode. This episode was a great haunted house episode. Great reactions, Angela!
@@dissolution9843 She hasn't seen it, so telling her a piece of information and then stating it is revealed in the commentary is a spoiler, and should not be discussed, specifically because she has requested/stated that she does NOT want to know or be told things outside of the episodes she's seen. @@StevesFunhouse The way that Angela is picking up on Jayne, the big tough guy, being scared is not a spoiler in any way. Serenity came from the Valley, just as Alamo is used to remind us the reason we fight.... It reminds of the valley, and actually reminds us of how Mal feels betrayed by the Rebels, though dedicated to their cause.
I'm really enjoying watching this with you. It's been years since I sat down to watch the season. I'd forgotten about this episode. Watching you jump was making me jump even though I should've known what was coming. The cast is stellar. I can't think of many shows that are on this level, honestly, as far as making it so easy to connect with and care about every character. Such great writing went into this one.
It was just a good lie she told to help them out - Mal is a browncoat; he's no one's servant. Love that Niska made such an impact after so little screen time..and your assessment of him is very accurate. Once again, thank you for reacting to this show, always love a chance to re-live time with these characters.
Jane's about as sharp as a bowling ball. He's as loyal as an unpaid "criminal" attorney. But in a gun fight he's the best friend you could ever hope for.
Oh, Book can keep a secret better than anyone there. One might call Book a master of secrets. (Read the comic series 😉) "It might have been the losing side. Still not convinced it was the wrong one." Is what I tell people when they ask me about working on both Berie campaigns.
You will grow to love Jayne I just know it. Also I would love to see the show come back but with like prequel seasons like when all the new worlds were getting going, or like a few decades back from this time line. There is already so much world building happening and its only episode 3.
This reaction, like the others, was a real treasure. Since you're still puzzling about Jayne, one thing to think about-especially since we didn't get a second season-is the question of WHY he's the way he is, and in particular why he's so greedy. I'm not spoiling anything to say he cares a lot about money... but we never see him spend a dime of it. He seems pretty selfish most of the time, but keep that question in mind. Because there's only one season, we never get much picture of Jayne's backstory compared to the others. There's only one place, I think, where we find out where Jayne's money really goes... and no matter what he does and who he's willing to hurt to get that money, it means something more to him than a fat bank account. Keep an eye out for it, because that one or two lines near the end of the series gave me a whole different perspective on him, no matter how awful he is to people on-screen.
Yeah, I think if we'd had the chance to see more about Jayne's backstory and family, we'd see him in a new light. You can tell that over time they'd have peeled back the layers of his tough guy persona.
It's remarkable how well this show holds up even now. Also can't help but imagine what the Reavers would have been if this show had been made today with the kind of budget genre shows are getting and the lower content restrictions of shows on streaming services.
I read a great essay back in 2010'ish about how the crew of Serenity represents aspects of Mal's character. Once you really get to know the characters it makes a lot of sense.

She keeps associating Jayne with hats and I just... It... He... I can't wait.
She started it almost immediately ..... lolol.
Lol
They managed to do horror so well with so little. Also Wash describing his favourite parts of Zoe is still hilarious, like how did they even get to that topic?
To be honest, they probably could’ve just said to him “tell me about your wife…“ And he probably would’ve started with the peach 😂
"The legs, definitely the legs. You can write that down". Wash is hillarious.
Wash is just good at telling War Stories. Amirite?
@@Aeroldoth3 Indeed. In that one moment, Simon represents everything the Alliance stands for, opposing Mal's independence/borderland cowboy.
That scene shows that indented servitude is legal in the Alliance. What kind of enlightened society is that?
anyone explain to her that the shaky cam was on purpose?
@@sld1776 Exactly. They allow indentured servitude and slavery, and don't really care about living conditions on the outback moons. They want the power of an "Alliance" without the responsibility.
Yeah, Jane is generally fearless in the face of any danger. But every time the Reavers are mentioned he becomes visibly terrified. It's an effective way to communicate how horrifying they are, showing that the toughest guy on the ship is scared shitless of them. (Kind of like how every time they needed to show that a baddie was strong in Star Trek TNG, they'd just have them kick Worf's ass. :P)
Also, the Reavers are definitely human beings.
Counterpoint, Jane does use all of his brain cells, you just have to realize that he's only got a handful.
And sometimes they have to share...
Mal is a pirate with a heart of gold, Jayne is first and foremost a mercenary. In the post series novels River loves the relationship Wash and Zoe, the love makes her feel good. The "reaver guy" in hiding reminded me of Newt in "Aliens "
“It’s so strange to see Jayne scared of Reavers.”
Yeah, it’s almost as if he doesn’t want to be raped, tortured, and eaten. 😜
And in that order, if he's very lucky, lol.
Don't forget, having his skin sown into their clothes.
Yeah, not a good start to your day.
if jayne gets scared or all rational, you know you´re in deep Sh.t !
A thing like that will wake you up! 🤢🤮😁
That you call Jane an asshat is more appropriate than you can even know. Really enjoying the reactions, hang on, you're in for such a ride.

Favourite quotes in this video;
"If I mess up, it's not like you'll be able to yell at me."
"May have been the losing side. Still not convinced it was the wrong one."
"Fox were so stupid!" 😒
Standouts in this episode, for me: the interrogation (brilliant, the way they tell us so much about the characters just by the way they act in interrogation), River and Simon’s different reactions to being out in space, and Mal’s way of distracting most of the crew while they deal with the booby trap.
I still love the contrast they showed between Simon's reaction to space and River's reaction to space.
"Fox was so stupid!"
Yep, got it in one.
Great reaction. I love the interrogation scene. It shows off the crew's personality.
It's a good introduction to the characters. The whole episode is just pure world-building. The Alliance, the war, the reavers, and basically every character talks about their relationships and shows off their personalities.
One of the great things about this show is that each of the main characters has his/her very strong, very distinctive personality and background.
That is good filmmaking... letting the viewer discover the truth, not just TELL them the truth... it connects the viewer to the scene, the characters, and the Story.
Jayne grew to become one of my favourites.
This show......it deserved at least 4-5 seasons!
With each episode you will learn more about the members of the crew. The movie at the end wraps up some things but not all. I love this series and it sounds like you are becoming one of us. a "Browncoat".
"it was on sale"
@@scambammer6102 Very cool reference.
@@Wolf-ln1ml so the "you're out of time" from episode 1 wasn't funny? ^^
@@irrelevant_noob There was no actual danger and Mal _intended_ to mess with Simon. Neither of these are true here.
I like to call him a Proto-Reaver, the madness has him but he hasnt fully mutilated himself into a weapon yet.
Mal being her servant was made up. It was the explanation for Mal and Zoe making up a story and being there in the first place. She needed to explain who they were and why they were lying without actually admitting to them being thieves.
Every time I'm having a bad day I watch one of your reaction and your laughter makes me feel better, thank you for that 👍
Inara was totally making up a story to get Mal off the hook. Also funny Worldbuilding considering what he’d be doing to rack up a debt with a companion. They explain that the arrangement is mutually beneficial, giving Serenity more respectability while giving Inara freedom to travel.
Not to mention that Inara actually pays rent to Mal for "her" shuttle/living space, so Serenity has at least a small income.
@@shanegraham2500
Also as a companion she is a trained lier, trained to make you believe whatever you want to believe or whatever she wants you to believe.
That's true, also I should add that indentured service is totally a thing in this setting, so it was a very plausible story.
I love that 3D Tetris light behind you. Almost as cool as the Rocinante.
She's singing the theme song!! That's how it starts..... 😉
You know you’re hooked when you listen to the theme song 30 times 😂 welcome to the Browncoats, M’lady 🙌🏽

I love that quote! I have it on my favourite mug! 😀
Ah spooky season came early this year! 😈
They did a great job of making the Reavers terrifying without showing us a true Reavers yet. The survivor becoming one was scary enough. 😨
The few words that we've gotten about them have been enough. BUT Jayne being scared means everything.

"I'm watching my favorite episode of Firefly"
"... oh, which one?"
"all of them"
Jayne is possibly one of the most complex characters of the bunch.
Jayne’s dumb, but he’s tough
He likes to shoot stuff
He don’t give a damn what you think
Spends his days turnin’ wrenches
His nights chasin’ wenches

Oh! He’ll happily kick in your teeth.
‘Cause he’s too proud to live

I love watching you puzzle all this out.
I really want to tell you all the things, but I figure you're going to get it as you go, same as the rest of us.
This first episode was trying to misdirect you regarding Simon. Since we didn't know who might be trouble, they tricked us into mistrusting him so that we'd be blind-sided by the agent.
Loving your reactions to Firefly! Jayne is an awesome character, all uber-aggressive and in your face, and yet gets scared with reavers (which is totally understandable). Keep up the great videos!
"Looked like a thing to me" - one of many firefly lines that made it into my normal conversation. This show is famous for its one-liners.
Agreed. One of my favorites is from the previous episode
"Why don't we ignore each other until you go away"😂
I do love the fact that the Alliance is all wearing Starship Trooper armor. Always thought that was a funny little, "We have some money but, it was easier than making new uniforms for the show." vibe. XD Which they certainly fixed for the movie.
God I love this show.
the show spent money on chinese translation. the movie didn't. so both have their shortcomings.
This is one of the best horror episodes of any show ever. So many great jumpscares, but none of them feel unnecessary.
Jayne will always have that "love-hate" vibe but he will surprise you with his humanity at random times.
Tom Scavo is how I will always know that actor. Of all the residents (in and around) Wisteria Lane, the Scavos were my favorite to watch.
Doug Savant was also on "Melrose Place".
Another reason to keep River and Simon on board is because the Alliance wants them, and Mal hates the alliance.😂
and they need a doctor
Also: It's the right thing to do.
I feel like that's the long and short of Mal's reasoning.
@@LadyDoomsinger Honestly you could justify taking them in purely based on self interest. You get a competent doctor for cheap and he won't be inclined to leave or haggle.

*Rewrites comment 50 times to avoid even the hint of spoilers* Yeah, so uh... this is a pretty good show. I think you're going to like it.
🤣
Omg, I can't wait to see you watch the rest. I love watching you experience Firefly. It's my all time favorite show
"Jayne doesn't use all his brain cells." - most accurate statement ever.
I think River liked being in space because she was "cut-off" from all the others. I little peace and quiet goes a long way.
That look on thr commanders face when the blood hits him is priceless. Lol
Mal is not indentured. He would never offer himself up like that. The doc had to learn how to suit up to go out in space. Great episode. Oh, that's what a reaver looks like.
As we say here in Texas; Y'all be safe.
This is by far my favorite reaction to the series so far. Amazing.

I've just gotta say, your laugh is infectious. Love your reactions
"Can Book keep a secret?" she says! Hahahaha!
Frick'n love this show! Your enjoyment is great to watch.
As I recall, Wash's "this land" scene with the toy dinosaurs began as improv in his audition for the role.
yes, whedon is known for being very picky with lines. if he writes a contraction that's what he wants to hear and if he writes it without a contraction he doesn't want to hear one.
You're a delight! Glad I found this channel. Firefly was one of my favorite shows
Inara just made up the story. Great reactions, Angela!
and yet, she hasn't seen "the commentary". So, why are we talking about it again ???
@@StevesFunhouse It's relevant. The commentary discusses a scene that was viewed this episode. It's supplementary knowledge that's not a spoiler.
@@dissolution9843 She hasn't seen it, so telling her a piece of information and then stating it is revealed in the commentary is a spoiler, and should not be discussed, specifically because she has requested/stated that she does NOT want to know or be told things outside of the episodes she's seen. She even has a person who tries to curate the comments to keep spoilers out of her view, but they can't catch everything.
Even if she indicates that she would LIKE to know such information, that doesn't mean that she wants you to tell her. Unless she specifically requests some additional information, telling her ANY extra information is a spoiler, because it cannot be gleaned from the content she has seen. "Supplementary" literally means additional/extra (i.e. it wasn't originally included).
However, there is nothing wrong with discussing the scene itself. So the ONLY thing I had a problem with was the mentioning of the extra content and that this was how you knew.
@@StevesFunhouse The way that Angela is picking up on Jayne, the big tough guy, being scared is not a spoiler in any way. The commentary just discusses the filmmakers way of making the audience feel the threat of something more. The way Jayne was in "The Train Job", when he wanted to ditch Zoe and Mal to make the drop off, is the same technique. So not sure why you think it's a spoiler.
@@artboymoy Some people are just THICK I guess. I have no issue with HER, but I DO with mentioning the commentary, because she has NOT had access to that ... yet. You are giving her information that she does NOT know, BEFORE she can experience it for herself. Think about it !!!

This is a journey of discovery, not a forum where you put out a question and everyone tells you the answer.
Serenity came from the Valley, just as Alamo is used to remind us the reason we fight.... It reminds of the valley, and actually reminds us of how Mal feels betrayed by the Rebels, though dedicated to their cause.
Everyone who loves sailing bluewater can connect with the "you can't take the sky from me" line.
Wash's interrogation was basically: give Alan free reign to crack up Doug Savant.
I'm really enjoying watching this with you. It's been years since I sat down to watch the season. I'd forgotten about this episode. Watching you jump was making me jump even though I should've known what was coming. The cast is stellar. Love that Niska made such an impact after so little screen time..and your assessment of him is very accurate.
Once again, thank you for reacting to this show, always love a chance to re-live time with these characters.
Adam Baldwin loves his character. He is quoted as saying "Sex, Violence, Thugery.....Jayne."
Jane's about as sharp as a bowling ball. He's as loyal as an unpaid "criminal" attorney. But in a gun fight he's the best friend you could ever hope for.

@Mrs_funnylilgalreacts well you seem genuine🧐
Oh, Book can keep a secret better than anyone there. One might call Book a master of secrets. (Read the comic series 😉)
"It might have been the losing side.
The crew playing basketball on the ship was a cool scene. I used to work on a buoy tender and we'd always play basketball in the hold.
Can't wait for u to watch next one.
I read a great essay back in 2010'ish about how the crew of Serenity represents aspects of Mal's character. Once you really get to know the characters it makes a lot of sense.
