    I love something that usually goes unremarked in this episode. The focus is so on Inara and Kaylee and how different they are as women, their strengths, their gifts, and how they interact with people, but I've yet to hear anyone mention the third woman in our crew, Zoe. In this episode we see her being a solid officer to Mal, a disciplinarian to Jayne, a loving wife to Wash, and an intelligent crew member in general. At no point do ANY of Firefly's women get pigeonholed into cliched 'female' roles or forced into pseudo 'male' ones, they all get to be feminine in their own way. I love this show so very much.

    You've probably noticed by now. The jobs change each episode, but the long-term story is River. You'll get some answers eventually.

    • @hkpew
      @hkpew Год назад +12

      I'm not sure I agree with that. I don't disagree that River is A long-term story being told, but I don't think it's THE long-term story - there are several others. Besides River, there's the relationship between Mal and Inara, the relationship between Simon and Kaylee, the dynamics of Wash and Zoe's marriage and their future family plans, Jayne's reliability and loyalty (or lack thereof, as the case may be), the problem of the Reavers, and Shepherd Book's mysterious past. Those are just the ones I came up with right now off the top of my head and could quickly describe in a non-spoilery way - I can think of a couple of others and I suspect there are more. Not only that, if the series hadn't been cancelled it's likely that even more would have been introduced, at least some of which may have already been planned. All of the ones I listed are at least touched on in the movie. Most have something of a resolution, although there's no way in just one movie to really focus on and satisfactorily resolve all of them and at least one quite intentionally doesn't get resolved at all.

    It's always amazing how this show can be so relatable. I was in Mal's shoes once, speaking out quick because I thought I was being clever, and instead I was just a -- Well, you know. Spent a little money, and a lot of effort to apologize by doing what the gal had always wanted to, spending a weekend in the mountains with nothing but the stars and the sound of the lake. We eventually married, and still are. The lesson? Be a Mal... but be a Mal who THINKS a little bit...

    One thing I'll say I respect about Mal: he's honest to a fault. He calls it exactly as he sees it, to the point where it becomes a detriment in a lot of circumstances. This episode is a *perfect* example of that. He point's out how impractical it would be for Kaylee to get the dress, and insults her in the process. He blatantly states his distaste for Inara's profession - insulting her in the process too, seems to be a pattern - but will adamantly defend her independence as a person in spite of that dislike. Which in turn gets him in a duel almost to the death.
    That hardened rogue with a heart of gold is an awesome trope, and Nathan Fillion did an amazing job with it as Mal!

  • @tvix6737
    @tvix6737 Год назад +11

    River's story developes but she is intentionally an enigma. We saw glimmers of her story in the the first episode but she is the puzzle character with each episode showing us just a hint more. Of all the characters, hers is the most nuisanced because the seemingly irrational outbursts become clearer and relevant if you pay attention. The cans were a connection, a symbolism to her story.
    Firefly is a must for rewatching because there is so many "missed it the first time" moments.

    I love how just the act of getting a job is a big victory for Mal, even if he nearly dies in the process. It shows how much he values his independence and ability to go his own way, without a fascist government constantly breathing down his neck. Every day he gets to keep doing that is a win for Mal.
    I also really love how he's able to gain the upper hand in the duel when he's allowed to fight his way: dirty and scrappy. There is no finesse in Mal's fighting style. He's the hockey player who'll pull your jersey up over you head and start punching you in the face while you can't see. But Mal's style is effective, and it's what's kept him alive all this time. But it's a great visual metaphor for how Mal doesn't belong in that world, and how he thrives when he is not bound by their stuffy rules.

    This episode highlights the differences between the social classes in the Firefly Universe. You will notice that Badger is very focused on his social standing and he is the catalyst that ties the story together. Mal's feelings for Inara combined with his disapproval of her career choice is also a strong component to the story.
    *In the scene where Mal insulted Kaylee:*
    Kaylee is very vocal about Inara's glamorous lifestyle as she admires the dress. Mal is noticeably uncomfortable. He even complains that the bag he is carrying is too heavy - wanting the crew to all move on. When that doesn't work, Mal insults Kaylee. Inara's glamorous career really hits a nerve for Mal - even to the point of lashing out at adorable Kaylee.
    At this point we can see the 'heavy bag' isn't heavy at all for Mal. All we see is Mal's regret for insulting Kaylee while Jayne stands clueless (lol). As you pointed out, Mal chose Kaylee for the Shindig mission (instead of Zoe) as a form of apology. Mal even makes certain Badger pays for Kaylee's dress (which most likely will later take from Mal's share and not Badger's brokerage fees).
    *"Sad little king of a sad little hill"*
    Somehow, the "unstable" River knew how to handle Badger better than the rest of the crew could. Badger was so charmed he didn't even want to hold River at gun point. The crew was too shocked to take advantage of the diversion. NOTE: Mark Sheppard (Badger) worked with Summer Glau (River) extensively to make certain she could copy his accent perfectly for her scene with him.

    I enjoy the contrast here of the old school versus new school aristocracy. Sir Warwick Harrow and Sir Murphy (the older gentleman that helped Kaylee out) are quite different to Atherton. Both older men have several medals for military service which Atherton is pointedly lacking and seem to value character above all, which they both seem to be able to sense in a person. Atherton possesses the veneer of a gentleman but underneath that he possesses no Chivalry at all. Look how he treats women compared to the older men!! Look how Atherton treats Duelling, like it’s just a game, which is in contrast to Sir Harrow who clearly takes it very seriously and is disgusted by Athertons behaviour. Atherton is New Money really. A man that earned his fortune and position through selling goods to the Alliance. Atherton even wears clothes that are like an Alliance uniform in contrast to the older gentleman that something that resembles wear older dress uniforms. The Old Aristocracy earned their position through hard work and military service and the New Aristocracy are dependant on the Alliance for their position. There’s also a great production note about the crowd of men surrounding Kaylee that says they’re all Gentlemen Farmers and highly value hard work and technical skill above all. It’s just interesting World building.

    Another tidbit in their costume design: GENERALLY, they did the opposite of the standard western show where the good guys keep their hats on. In Firefly, the bad guys tend to wear hats (like Badger and Patience and her crew ). Jayne (so far) wears the occasional hat only for practical reasons, but our crew does not wear hats.
    It's a subtle touch to the design of this Goram Shiny show.

But that's definitely a close second after that part at the end when Inara looks Mal in the eye and says "Besides, why would I want to leave Serenity?". One could argue that he didn't include her feet in that description, or one could count her feet as part of "her legs".
    One could even argue that "everything above it" included her mind, since Wash did indeed love Zoe that much. Though I'm not entirely certain Alan Tudyk put that much thought into his ad-libbed attempts to make Doug Savant break into laughter. 🤣

    This is one of my favourite episodes, and definitely my favourite of the lighter 'fun' episodes. It's an excellent palate cleanser after Bushwacked.
    How can you not love seeing Kaylee in that dress and having the time of her life? She may be a grease monkey, but that doesn't mean she can't like pretty things.
    Then of course, the Mal/Inara tension simmers along nicely and we get some more insight into Mal's character. He may not respect Inara's profession but he respects her and treats her like a person, not a possession.
    The River/Badger scene is great too, apparently Mark Sheppard coached Summer on how to do the accent. Oh and don't worry, River will make more sense as time goes on.
    Finally, the "mercy is the mark of a great man" line is one of my favourite Mal moments in the show.
