How does Discord make money? There's a lot more to Discord than you'd first think, here's why.
Discord's business model is strange it hardly makes any money, it doesn't sell a fee or sell user data or so it seemed.. Discord is an evil business and this video will explain everything bad about discord and why discord is bad. Discord is trash because it is damaging society by the way it makes money.
This is the dark side of discord. This is why this video will be exploring the dark of discord and discord's business model and how discord makes money.

So yes, if you move to the Netherlands, you will be able to log into Discord and your data will be shared with Discord Netherlands Inc.
Tencent also owns a SMALL share in Discord. Most credible sources claim between 2 - 5%. Nowhere near the 38% Moon pulled out of his ass. AKA Tencent can't do shit other than complain. They can't make changes in Discord. This is sensationalized hot garbage.

"Discord combined calling functionality from Skype with Servers" - I'm really surprised how the description of Discords early success completely misses a mention of TeamSpeak. The fact that Discord incorrectly calls chat boards "Servers" makes it obvious that Discord was actually meant to be a more user friendly version of TeamSpeak. It filled a niche in that regard, which tremendously contributed to its success.
It's all IRC
Discord's own terminology originally called them "guilds" not servers. Until recently it was only the users that called them servers
@@Ehal256 not the original poster, but I can see why they say that Discord "servers" aren't servers. It's because they aren't- the chat boards aren't sorted according to the server handling the chats
@@Ehal256 yeah, but here we mean text and voice chat servers. TeamSpeak was a way bigger deal than Skype, with REAL servers that you could buy or run from home if you could afford it. I remember switching to Discord from Skype and TS3 back in around 2017, the first thing that brought me there was free group chats. TS3 group chats, I mean, servers, were paid and usually (at least in my local area) kinda toxic, and Skype wasn't relevant anymore - not only everyone switched to Discord real quick, but also the group chat plague that I lived when I was 8-10 happened - random people adding everyone from their friends list to random chats to spam their inbox, and it's not a thing anymore on Discord. I've always called these chats 'servers', because that's the terminology I got used to as a kid - I was only 10 when I stopped using Skype, so you know..

Slight correction:
Discord does use encryption. However, it doesn’t use end-to-end encryption.
This means that while it is encrypted, everything you put on Discord (the app) is readable by Discord (the company).
He already said
That they did have some security
But it was stored in the discord data base
Another correction: while end-to-end encryption is available in the Facebook Messenger app, it is a special mode and not the default. Messenger is very popular in my country, yet I don’t remember ever seeing anyone use the encrypted mode (it has black bubbles).
It was added just for marketing an illusion of security on Facebook. Like the video’s creator unknowingly does. If you cared about security, you probably wouldn’t be using Facebook anyway.
even though it's a messaging app, doesn't mean it's always private
there's so many cases where other people accounts get banned because they posted something terrible or joining some sensitive political server.
Even if it was E2E encrypted it doesn’t stop them from having a back door like *coughing* *coughing* WhatsApp. And for them to have a single way encrypted and stored decrypted in the database means that if anyone hacked into the database like with an SQL attack it lightens the work for him and he can then directly access the message. That’s the point that he meant, or at least I think so.

I know the title is an exaggeration but I’m gonna point out what I consider to be the most evil business, Nestlé decided to turn a profit by telling African, South American, and South Asian parents that their(Nestlé’s) baby formula was better for babies than breast milk was, which caused tons of babies to die in the 70s.
well, nestle always impresses by being blatantly evil. i mean "we do not think water is a human right" is pretty much as "comic book villain" as it goes.
i wonder if this was already the "toned down" version, after their PR team looked into it or if their PR team was not included in the discussion. the latter would indicate incompetence, the first one is scary.
From what I had heard, they had given products for free for about a month, to which point the mothers wouldn't be able to produce milk anymore. Then they began to charge for the milk - basically forcing them to buy from Nestle or let their babies starve.
Ofc it is evil, it is a french country /j

It's just how pretty much all social media works. Discord isn't more "evil" than say TikTok, another company Tencent owns, and companies such as Facebook and Twitter collect way more data than Discord does. Yes, this data collection sucks, but Discord doesn't really stand out as particularly bad entity compared to all other companies doing the same thing.

I can't say it's not bad, it really is, but calling Discord the most evil business in the world is an overstatement to say the very least.
I mean, Tencent is automatically more evil since the entirety of discord's evilness is from tencent in the first place, but tencent just collects user data to manipulate the planet. It's f**ked, but it's not Nestlé's divert the water supply of an entire town and then sell them that water back when they have severe drought.
And Nestlé's not bad compared to cigarette companies, which tried to obscure information on cigarettes causing cancer by spamming the research field with unrelated tests, thus willingly giving cancer to huge populations.
They aren't that bad compared to plastics companies, which in turn avoided using recyclable plastics by making resin identification codes. RICs are designed to tell you what type of plastic a given plastic is. They also happen to resemble the recycling symbol quite a bit. This in turn caused recycling to become harder as people thought non-recyclable objects were also recyclable, making already terrible pollution even worse.
They, in turn, are a f**king joke compared to General Motors, a company that, almost entirely thanks to Thomas Midgley Jr., nearly destroyed civilization itself...Twice.
I'm not kidding, GM is the reason leaded gas exists, which was the largest cause of death for decades, taking the lives of millions and is still the main contributor of lead in the atmosphere, despite being banned 5 decades ago. It also caused an entire generation to be severely mentally stunted.
That's nowhere nearly as bad as the second time they f**ked the world, in which they used CFC. Otherwise known as the gas that single-handedly caused the near destruction of the ozone layer, being exponentially more damaging than any other cause of the damage done to the ozone layer. It's also why the ozone layer is no longer an issue, we banned CFC, and that caused the ozone layer to change from being erased into slowly healing. Thomas Midgley personally invented both of those compounds, but he's not a business, GM is. They did all of this knowingly too.
I feel like causing two global-warming level cataclysms at a rate exponentially faster than global warming are kind of incomparable to giving information to a company working for a government trying to take over the world. It's bad, but the worst they can do is create a dystopia, they aren't ever going to end civilization for short-term profit.
EDIT: People down in the comments are right, DuPont's also f**ked, they didn't ever almost end the world but did so many extremely evil things that its too much to count and probably add up to GM.
Tbh I would prefer the end of the civilization to living in a dystopia. You would have no freedom, no rights. We aren't that far though, they're just good at hiding it
@@chillslime6673 You can kill yourself in a dystopia if you really hate it, and dystopias aren't dictatorships. To create a true dystopia, the leader also has to give up a very decent portion of power. That, or you leave your dystopia to a revolution that will eventually come.
Not to mention the eventual death you will face unless you find a way to make yourself immortal, but in either case either you will eventually get bored or your successor will not be as good a dictator.
1984's or fahrenheit 451's or the brave new world's dystopias all rely on some form of societal self-law enforcement that makes even the leaders lead f**ked up lives. Hell, the majority of officials in 1984's government straight up wants to end the government. Their problem is that someone made an indestructible system that makes itself keep going, at the cost of everyone's happiness, including whoever made the system.
China wants full power to itself, not a dystopia. They'll build a dystopia if necessary, but the dystopia they build would be easy to dissolve.

Not everything mentioned in this video was entirely factual, but I think it hit some good points. One thing Discord did do well is reset the standard for instant messengers and they’ve all improved because of it, both proprietary and open source.

Blaming discord for Jan 6 is like blaming 4chan for any relatively recent shooting. Yeah they might've used it that doesn't mean they wouldn't have done it had the platform not existed. It's a damn chat app they could've just as easily used telegram.
Yes. There are some good points and interesting information in this video, but that connection is a far stretch. I wish this video would have been made more professionally.

The fact that you think that January 6 was a result of manipulations at Discord as opposed to being a false flag operation by the FBI is quite troubling.

I just watched a video about how Shell poisoned the farms and ruined the economy of the Nigerian people, while keeping them under brutal military control. It’s almost insulting saying that discord is the “most evil business in the world”. The January 6th inclusion was kind of forced too. Calling it “world changing” is kind of dumb given it was a strictly American event.

It's more like a conspiracy theory when there is no actual proof that Discord is sharing data with Tencent.
How?! Do you even have a concept of how internet works? What is a server (not a discord "server") where data is stored? Same as "Cloud" platforms. Its a physical "computer" with bunch of hard drives which stores data in directories same as you store your own data locally on your hard drive. Its not hard for shareholders to get to data that is stored on servers which Discord uses.
@@snoop3539 i do understand server and discord has access to all of our chat history, but, read my sentence again.
@@snoop3539 being a shareholder doesn't come with credentials for access to raw data in storage. Or to the systems (databases) they'd be needing to look into to find out WHERE in storage it actually is.
@@snoop3539 Yeah it is a physical computer, so you just need to send 1000 chinese agents to raid all Discord's servers somewhere in America, each one with hundreds of 1TB, extremely fast flash drives and copy all the data so it would take only about three days to gather few petabytes. No one would notice.
"Its not hard for shareholders to get to data that is stored on servers which Discord uses." EasyAntiCheat is a product of a company 40% owned by Tencent and it randomly uploads files and memory segments to their servers.
Every game that requires it is a game you should never play.
Probably no one will read this but as a developer here’s what I think:
- I’m not convinced how the founder’s previous actions with regards to personally identifiable data (PII) is important in this discussion. A few years back this was absolutely not as important as it is now. In fact, complying with data best practices is a non trivial engineering effort which most startups dont have the resources to focus too much on.
- pretty much every startup starts by growing its user base before looking to make a profit, using investor funds to do so (as an example - notice how google maps only started adding ads recently ?)
- a surprising amount of messaging apps are not encrypted. Facebook’s messenger is NOT (unlike this video mentions), there is an option to use encrypted messaging but no one I’ve ever met uses this feature in the messenger app.
- Tencent / China gathering worldwide data is a genuine concern, maybe this video should’ve kept a focus on this instead of focusing on discord. Perhaps it could also mention the legality of moving data from users living in country X to China
