Discus Fish Tank Layouts Evolution - all my discus fish and tank layouts.
This video will show you the evolution of all the layouts of my discus fish tank, and also all my discus fish that I have had so far..
In it you will be able to see the evolution of all the layouts of my discus tank, as well as all the discus fish that I have been having in recent years.
Of course, it is very difficult to keep the same discus for a long time, that would be ideal, but there are always variables that cause us to have to change the aquarium fauna, for example, fish deaths, fish diseases, sale and purchase of new inhabitants , the fact that we want to change the colors of the aquarium and in my case, there was a time when I wanted to reduce the number of fish in order to be able to maintain a ratio of at least 50 liters per discu.
THIS VIDEO SHOWS THE LAYOUTS UNTIL TODAY, MAY 8, 2021, BUT SOON I WILL PERFORM A NEW CHANGE...
Stay tuned for the next videos ...

So awesome 🤩 really appreciate you sharing this video and I hope you have a wonderful day
Hello my friend!!!
Sorry for the huge delay in responding. I've been a bit away from social media and the PSK aqua project, but I'm slowly making a comeback.
Responding to your comment, I really appreciate it and I'm very happy you liked it, this kind of comment gives encouragement to keep making videos.
Happy new year…
-This has to be one of the best videos about Discus on YT!!!!!
-This is exactly what I've been looking for. The best layout for me for layout 5 and 11. Just jaw dropping my friend.
-My 150 gallon tank is due for delivery in 2 weeks and I'm even more excited than a teenager anticipating his/her first kiss!
-Thanks a lot for uploading this!
Hello my friend!!!
I'm very flattered by your words and glad you enjoyed the video.
I hope you got some ideas for setting up your aquarium the way you want it. 150 gallons is already a nice tank, how big will it be?
I'm curious what you're going to do, keep me posted. 😃
Cheers, my friend. 🤜🏻🤛🏻
All are good happy discuss keeping
Thanks a lot Amit!!!
I always try to make sure the Discus, and all the other inhabitants of the aquarium, are in good health...if they are well, so am I. 😊
Precisely the video I’ve been looking for. Thanks for sharing.
You are welcome my friend, it is a pleasure for me to share what I am doing with my discus tank and other things I am doing in the aquarium hobby.
Then if other people like it and feel helped, it becomes an even greater pleasure and gives me encouragement to continue.
Thank you very much for your support.
Great collection of aquascapes. I liked the one with vertical logs and an island on the right.
Thank you so much my friend!!!
I’m glad you like them. 🤜🏻🤛🏻
Really nice. Alot of work with changes
Thank you so much my friend!!!
Thanks for sharing
Hello my friend!!!
You're welcome... I appreciate your comment. 🤜🏻🤛🏻
Thanks for uploading such an inspiring video of various setup. Appreciated!
Thank you so much John!!!
I'm so glad you enjoyed it and could help you get inspiration. 👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻😃
Thank you for putting these layout videos together! Really keeps ideas flowing on what I want to do with my discus tank. I just ordered the most recent Amazonian Tree Roots from Aqua Decor!
Hello my friend!!!
I am very happy that you liked the video and the layouts.
Very nice... these backgrounds from aquadecor are fantastic.
I like your all setup
Thank you very much... ☺️👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻
Thank you for sharing, this is the most interesting Discus tank video on youtube!
Thank you Gino!!!
I'm so glad you liked the video. 😊👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻
I'm about to set up an acrylic 135 discus tank. Thank you for the video and ideas. You're work is amazing.
Thank you very much...
In this video there are lots of choices for anyone looking for ideas to make a layout. And you can keep watching the videos, because now I have a completely different one. 😃😅
For what it's worth: Only because your displaying discus of various colors, I'd love to see the tank with black substrate/sand, a plain black background on only the rear of the tank. Use about 5 or 7 of the unadorned (no greenery) Aquadecor tree trunks, spaced something like 4 trunks in the left 1/3 of the tank, none in the middle 1/3, and then 3 trunks in the right 1/3. Don't space them quite so equidistant from each other as you had early on. Maybe have two of the trunks (doesn't matter which 1/3) placed only a couple inches apart while the others are 8"-12" apart. Perhaps a handful of fist sized rocks (gray in color, darker than the silver/gray tree trunks, but not as dark as the substrate/background) to be placed in a natural looking pattern in the middle 1/3 of the tank. Keep them fairly close together but not piled up. No greenery! Normally I love greenery, especially LIVE, but my vision for this tank with these fish offers an attractive but understated backdrop the stars of the show ..... the discus.
I'd like to see it 'stocked' with a dozen 'janitor fish' to keep the algae and detrius under control, and perhaps a couple clown loaches? A couple of schools of a dozen or so smaller fish. Choose them for their somewhat unique shape, swimming characteristics , and different accent colors, but don't pick flashy colored fish as you want the focus point to be those beautiful discus. Barbs/rasboras/ and similar community schooling fish would add movement and some quickness to the tank. Unlike many discus keepers, I would not put any angel fish in the tank. Again, the shape of the discus is unique and we don't want to share the spotlight with similar colored or shaped fish. Make sure your lighting is the correct strength and 'color' to make the fish 'pop'.
As you can see I've given this some thought. It's what I'd like to do with a 120 gal. tank for myself but being in my 70s precludes me from dealing with the set-up and maintenance of a tank that large.
I think you have a very detailed , orderly, symmetrical mind, but when it comes to visual design, I think it sometimes works against you a bit. Odd numbers work better than even numbers, whether it's aquascaping or landscaping. Landscapers always use shrubs and other plantings in odd numbers. It's just the way most of us perceive things that are visual. 3/5/7 trumps 2/4/6 units of anything decorative 98% of the time. For example, the last version with the 2 'islands' would be more effective if not being more or less symetrical in placement and size. I very much like the way you've produced/edited this video. Well done, and Good Luck with the search for your perfect discus 'scape.
Hello my friend!!!
Wow, what a great comment. I apologize in advance for the late reply.
I agree with your vision for the discus tank. The black background and the substrate with well-placed logs and a few rocks would really help to bring out the fish. Schooling fish and peaceful species in complementary colors would be great additions.
I really like your ideas! Minimalist decor with a focus on discus, using odd colors and numbers, can create a stunning aquarium.
70 years old... you're still young. If you want to get your aquarium up and running, go for it. Even if it's little by little, but go for it.
Enjoyed the evolution of your aquascapes. There is something I like in all of them. I borrowed your technique of using socks to hold the soil for the plants because I wanted to be able to change my placement of the plants easily. It has worked out very well for me - thank you!
Hello John!!! thank you very much ...
it is good to know that you are using this technique and even better, that it is working for you. You have nothing to be thankful for, it is a pleasure to know that someone sees my videos and uses the tips I give.
My pleasure.
Fantastic video but I noticed the discus liked the roomier style were they had more room to swim around ✌️just a thought 🙏✌️👍🇨🇦
Hello my friend!!!
Yes, it's true. I've always tried to give them as much swimming space as possible throughout the layouts.
Very Beautiful aquariums and Fish
Thank you so much Kristina!!! I'm so glad you liked it.
Beautiful 😍
Thank you so much!!! 👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻
Hey u have some really gorgeous discus . I love the one with the central island with plants . It looks minimal but sufficient on the perfect. Keeps our focus on those amazing discus ❤️
Hi Dheeraj!!!
Thank you very much...
That layout looked really nice and as you say, it let the fish be seen and be the main focus of attention in the aquarium.
Thank you for your comment and support.
esta bonito ,e o mais importante super limpo ..parabens ..
Obrigado Carlos!!! Dá trabalho, mas é com gosto. 😊😅
Man your this video is a complete guide book for how to scape a bare bottom discus tank. I also keep discus in a bare bottom tank and keep wondering in what all ways I can decorate the tank. Your this video gave me a whole bunch of ideas. Thank you. Keep it up.
Thanks Avishek!!! 👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻
Hi there buddy. By far the best layout was the 8th one. Simple and clean looking, but tank looks great atm planted and bare bottom with the socks as soil and root holders 😋👍
tbh, your 9th layout is the best.
Thanks a lot, my friend... I really like that one too, but I'm a suspect. ;)
Wow so many layouts. Awesome :)
My two favorites are: The one with the huge red moor trunk and smaller peace of the RM next to it and the one with the island in the middle.
Now while watching this video I noticed that it would not be bad if the tank was at least 60cm high, I think that then the discus would come much more to the fore with its elegant look.
However, great video!!! :)
Hello Vladimir !!!
I totally agree with you ... There were two things I regretted when the aquarium arrived home. They were, not having had the aquarium the size of the furniture (240cm) and not being 60cm tall ... 🤦🏼♂️ Now I have to be content with what I have. 😅
Thank you very much for the comment on your choice of your favorites. 👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻
The RED MOOR TRUNK was the best among all this. The trunk with it's radiating Reddish colour and some epiphytes plants like Anubis and Buchepalandra on the trunk that can take the temperature required for the discus. Good look, pristine water and clean and tidy tank is the requirement.
Thank you my friend.
Those are some of the brightest Discus I've seen. Easily as beautiful or more than a saltwater setup. Don't care for glass bottom. Heard white sand is good for Discus
Hello my friend!!!
Thank you very much for the comment.
Happy new year to you and yours.
NIce video! My favorite 3 layouts were 5,8, & 9
Hello V Mar!!!
I'm so glad you liked the video!!!
Effectively I can't have a favorite… when I finish setting up an aquarium, I start thinking about the next one. 😅
Very good just wish we could all experiment like you(expensive)
Thank you very much, my friend...
It depends on what you think is expensive. For me, something that is used and used well is not expensive.
On 2nd thoughts number 9 is equally brilliant as it flows with the eye along the whole length of the 6ft tank. It is something I will probably strive to try and put my own touch on when i finally set up my 5 ft juwel tank.😎😃
Hello my friend!!!
it's not easy to choose 😅, I don't know which one I like anymore.
I just know that when I finish assembling a new layout, the next day I feel like making another one ... 😂
When did you plan to assemble yours? I really liked to see it.
Well as seeing as covid has made me cancel my family holiday to Greece in June I can start to cycle the tank very soon just need to find some nice big big wood from somewhere first for the anubias and epiphytes 😃😋
All very nice scapes, I'm glad you ditched the vertical logs for the realistic textured logs though 😉 id love to keep discus one day
Hello my friend!!!
As you could see, I like to vary the Discus tank templates a bit. The advantage of the Aquadecor logs is that they are inert and let me have more control in the water parameters. But I agree with you about the beauty of the texture of natural logs. 😊
Why don't you have Discus? Stay tuned for the video that will be out later today (7:00 PM in Portugal) here on the channel. 😃👍🏻
Man your this video is a complete guide for how to scape a bare bottom discus tank. I also keep discus in a bare bottom tank and keep wondering on how can I decorate the tank. Your this video gave me lot of ideas. Thank you and keep it up.
Thank you Avishek !!!
I'm so glad that you liked it and that I can help you. If you are based on one of the aquascapes, send me a photo or video for me to see on Facebook or Instagram.
I would love to see that.
@@PSKaqua I saw the video just recently. I will get the supplies and scape. Will send you over I get it ready.
cool, i'm waiting ...☺️
Espetáculo.... Um dia quando me sentir mais confiante nas minhas capacidades com peixes hei de comprar uns Discus.. abraço
Obrigado Big Man!!! Força... no que souber e poder ajudar não hesites em perguntar. Grande abraço.
i liked the last one the most
Hello Eddie!!! Thank you so much for the comment…
I can't decide which one I like best. 😅😅😅
However, soon I will make a change like I have never done in the aquarium.
I have wanted to do this for a long time and it will be done soon. 😃😋😜
Stay tuned. 👍🏻
Number 8 is my favorite
Hello Circus!!!
Thank you very much for the comment…
This trunk is really spectacular. 😊👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻
Thank you very much for your sharing. From your observations, which layout do you think all the discus look more happy n healthier ?
Hello my friend, thanks for your comment!!!
Maybe in the last two.... ☺️
Awesome ideas for setups ... can you please name some aquarium plants that were grown in your aquarium on the logs..??
Hello my friend!!!
Happy new year to you and yours... 😀
The plants I have attached to the logs are anubias coffeefolia.
If you want, feel free to explore the other videos where I show how I put plants in a bare bottom. I try to show EVERYTHING I do in my aquariums.
Looks great! Do you have 3 Tidal 110s AND a canister filter? Or are they tidal 55?
I have a similar set up with 2 tidal 110s
Hello my friend!
Sorry for the late reply...
I had 2 Tidal 75 and a 110. They are very powerful filters.
i love nature style, so i choose 5:57 but with sand/white sand for baseground ✌🏻.
Hello my friend!!!
That was one that stayed the longest... the fact that I didn't have sand was because I was into keeping the barebottom, but it's true that it always looks better with sand....
By the way, have you seen how I have been keeping the aquarium after those layouts?
@@PSKaqua no,cuz i just found ur video in my search result for aquascaping theme 😜
Ok... but if you like a natural style on aquascape, take a look there if you want. 👍🏻🤜🏻🤛🏻
They're all very cool but I like the second Redmoor wood and the island ones best- especially the last one with more plants. The school of Cardinals helped too for me. Can I ask if you think the Discus have a favourite and which helped bring them out the most?
Hello my friend!!!
Thank you very much...
Of all the ones in the video, maybe the ones that made the discus come out the most, were the last ones. But in all of them they have particularities. The best thing is to imagine yourself a fish and think about how you would feel safer and more protected.
However, the layout that I have had the most success with is this one that I have now.
all of it is amazing deco.. wonder what plant has been used..
Hello Kamarul!
Thank you very much...
From what layout would you like to know what plants were used?
@@PSKaqua on 3:28.. the island ones..
@@KamarulAzlanAhlengChai These plants are anubias (rock-attached) and the largest is an echinodorus.
In the end you remove the sand. I guess cleaning the huge tank a hassle if you have substrate.
Hello my friend!!!
No doubt that the tank without substrate is much easier to clean and keep clean.
When I have substrate I try to vacuum the surface of the substrate to keep everything clean. It is an extra hassle...
That's why I also have a lot of planorbis snails that help a lot and clean all the decaying organic matter very well.
Ive gone through the same pain with keeping gravel and sand in a 6ft tank. ive now removed it all and went barebottom to be able to keep better water quality for my fish
Hello my friend!!!
It is true, it is amazing the improvement in water quality without sand or substrate.
I am currently with sand and the work to keep it clean is much more than when I had bare bottom.
But I know I have to have that work and for now, I am not sorry I went back to sand.
@@PSKaqua I do prefer the look of sand but eventually fish will get sick. When ever I removed it I could really tell how dirty it was as the water was dark brown
@@matty00866 that's the bad thing about having sand, the debris builds up and will inevitably degrade the water. So I try my best to reduce that debris by siphoning every week.
I like to 9th and 10th setup
Hello my friend!!!
Thanks for the comment... I'm a suspect because I like them all, but I understand what you're saying. Because they are "more different", they stand out.
Once again, thank you.
Do you prefer bare bottom to sand? Was the sand hard to keep clean?? Debating whether to add sand to my tank now. Thanks!
Hello my friend!!!
If you ask me if I prefer bare bottom or sand, of course aesthetically I prefer with sand. It is much more natural and more pleasing to the eye. But of course bare bottom is more practical.
If you are thinking of putting sand, I advise you to have a good cleaning crew, like lots of corydoras and plenty of snails... they will keep the sand clean.
Do you recommend more open water space rather then lots of decorations? I’m deciding to go with discus tank in the next few months can’t really find much on what they prefer. Love the log setup you had that looked like trees that was my favorite by far
Hello my friend!!!
Thank you very much for the comment. 😃
I recommend that fish can swim with plenty of space, however, I personally don't like to see them on 4 glass walls without any decoration at all.
That's why I've always had it with decoration. When making your setup, take into consideration providing shaded areas and with refuges. Usually large plants like echinodorus, giant vellisnerias give that kind of refuge. If you can get one or more logs try to get them to create those kinds of zones.
@@PSKaqua I planned on putting 5-7 Amazon swords I already have In the tank and one large decoration and keeping the rest open! Thanks for the advice
@@tracemiller1519 Very well thought out. That way you give them room to swim and to retreat when they need it.
Amazon swords are spectacular plants and very good to be in a Discus aquarium. Well chosen.
I'd like to see the aquarium later. 😀👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻
@@PSKaqua yea that’s kinda what I was thinking, one larger decoration and a handful of plants! Thanks for the reply
@@PSKaqua yes and the Amazon swords seem to be the only plants that will last more then 2 months in my tank and actually grow 🤣
What is your filtration setup? Thought I saw a cannister filter, 3 HOBs, a UV/algae filter and maybe some others?
Hello my friend!!!
At this moment I don't have the HOBs anymore. I am now with a Fluval FX6 and an internal filter made with a decoration...
A sump and wave maker would make filtration so much easier
Hello Truthfactreality !!! I fully agree with you, and I would like to have a sump, but the aquarium furniture does not allow one. 😞
10th layout for me
Hello my friend!!!
I'm suspicious, because I like them all, but yes, the 10th one is cool…
I noticed you are using a white background. Which Discus colour is best suited for a white background?
Hello my friend!!!
The background has a matte film and a rgb led strip.
For a white background I would put discus with darker colors like turquoise blues and reds. Also a group of reddish discus would look good.
The yellow ones I don't think would look very good on a light background.
But it all depends on your tastes.
what plants did you use in the 4th layout?
Hello my friend!!!
Sorry for the huge delay in responding. I've been a bit away from social media and the PSK aqua project, but I'm slowly making a comeback.
Responding to your comment, basically anubias coffeefolia.
what kind of light are u using on this tank?
Hello my friend!!!
It's a 180cm RGB light rail that I bought, if I'm not mistaken, on Amazon a few years ago.
For the price, it does a good job.
I'm not using it at the moment because I don't have any plants that need RGB light.
I'd like to take this opportunity to wish you an excellent 2024. 🤜🏻🤛🏻
Tiveste ai uns selvagens pelo meio?
Sim... uns Tefé e um heckle.
Lindos... mas era muita promiscuidade junta, tive que me decidir. 😅
Did some discus died as you keep changing the deco?
Hello my friend!!!
No, no fish died in any change, or derived from the change.
What happened to your angelfish? I noticed it was getting less and then they just all disappear during the duration of the video.
Hello my friend!!!
Nothing happened to the angel fish, at least while they were with me.
I decided at a certain point to reduce the amount of fish, because they were too many for the gallons I have in the tank.
I was selling some discus and the angelfish I ended up selling as well.
I'm curious as to why so many layouts? Doesn't it stress out your discus?
Hello my friend!!!
That is an excellent question and makes perfect sense. However the major changes were made over a long time in between. There were others that were minimal changes that did not harm the welfare of the discus at all.
Hi, where are you buying your decorations?
Hello Mr. Phantastic!!!
The natural logs I bought at local aquarium stores and the fake logs I bought at Aquadecor.
@@PSKaqua thank you for replying. Your tanks are beautiful
Where can I buy the logs please
Hello ncnguyen !!!
The logs are from Aquadecor backgrounds ... if you look on the internet you will see their work, they are spectacular.
If you need help contact me to see if I can help you with anything else.
hi , why u decided to remove all soil & sand?
Hello my friend!!!
When I used the big log, it started to fall apart and left lots of pieces all over the aquarium making it hard to vacuum everything up, and even got the sand dirty. As I had already thought about trying a bare bottom, this was the opportunity to do so and I removed everything.
@@PSKaqua my discuz tank also have white sand , but many stool ,how to clean up ?
@@siowhaohao3910 Doesn't it come out with sand suction?
I wish you and yours a great year 2022.
What filteration are you using for your Discus?
Hello my friend!!!
As my main filter I have a Fluval FX6, but over time I have added more and more ways to increase the biological capacity. For that, and if you notice in this video, I put 3 Seachem Tidal, 2 Tidal 75 and 1 Tidal 110.
Right now I have a 3D background where I put some pumps behind and that allows me to have even more capacity. If you watch my latest videos you'll understand how it's installed.

6 discus dead?
Hi Nazrul!!!
Sorry, but I didn't understand your question....
@@PSKaqua you started with 11-12 discus and ended with only 6 left in the tank? Did the others die?
Hi@@NiaVazz !!!
No, none died... in fact, there was one that died, but because it jumped out of the aquarium once I forgot to close the lid... 😩
When I decided to have more discus it was at a time when I had time to change the water every other day to balance the organic load that was generated by so many fish. When I was no longer able to do this, I decided to reduce the number of discus. My tank can have up to 9 discus (taking into account the ratio of 40 liters/discus), but I prefer to have 6 large ones at most and have fewer problems with the water.
@@PSKaqua oh sad to hear one jumped. I didn’t know discus could jump. Beautiful landscapes :)
@@NiaVazz Thank you very much... 😊
Yes, they can jump and they do it very often...if you don't use a lid, you are bound to have it happen.
