How do you prevent botulism? I’ve read to make sure the leaves and flowers have no moisture and completely dry but I see people doing oil infusions with fresh herbs. I’m a bit confused.

I have found that by using oregano olive oil and added to any salve can increase shelf life significantly.

Olive oil goes rancid quite quickly usually 6 months unless you keep it cold and dark, usually the oil and rubs/salves use grapeseed, avocado or fractionated coconut oil vs olive oil. You can use just about any oil but how long will it last before going rancid depends on the oil used.

After the birth of my daughter I did a sitz bath of calendula, comfrey, and lavender to make tea bags for the tub. It was HEAVENLY compared to the Epsom salt I used with my oldest 3.
Vitamin E or Rosemary Oleoresin Extract will help extend the shelf life of the oils (fats).

Several years ago our naturopath told me to combine my calendula oil with a goldenseal tincture and spray it on my son’s arm, where his scratching had infected his eczema. It worked like a charm and it’s my tried and true for healing any skin irritations now. Thank you for sharing so much in your videos and on your web site.

You can buy the nylon mesh coffee filters at any big box store, I like the V shaped ones as it aids in getting the liquid out. Plop the stuff into one of those, it's a very fine mesh, does NOT absorb any of the goodies, and you can then take a spoon and press the herbs to the side of it to wring out any remaining oils to recover them.
Goto a dollar store / salvation army etc, and get an old coffee maker for a few bucks, it comes with the strainer AND a basket to hold it in to make it even easier and cheaper for you.

I've seen the oven used as a double boiler, placing an oval roasting pan in the oven with about an inch of hot water, then add your jars of herbs and oil; oven on the lowest setting. I use my crockpot on low or warm with my jar of herbs and oil and a couple inches of water.

I live in the Midwest, I had it most of the time it is sunny window, but there is not been a lot of sun this winter. Is that too long or is it still good? Should I throw it out? Ok, 2weeks is not enough time to extract everything out of the herb(s) being used. It takes a minimum of 6-8 weeks for maximum extraction of the herb(s) used. And you "ALWAYS" press the herb(s) you used, to get the remaining amount of oil out . Even if you have to use a fine mesh screen afterwards then do so. And even if you have some particulars of the herb(s) you used left in the oil , that's fine, It doesn't matter if there is still bits of herb(s) left in the oil.

I put my herbs and oil straight into a jar and put the jar on a metal candle diffuser, with a metal ashtray in between. It works brilliantly. Nicely warm but not hot. Works perfectly for me . Candle burns for about 4 hours, perfect ❤❤❤❤

Thank you for sharing with us you seem so cheery and I like the fact that anyone can do this as you are doing it in your kitchen. I think people should learn this it's an old Homestead thing a regular thing that people did way back long ago and we should not be so spoiled to rely on farmers to rely on pharmacies and health food stores for all of this that we can certainly do at home and teach our children and our friends and save money and know what's in the product

Y’all are gonna think I’m crazy but I sometimes actually save a few of Mary's videos to my ‘Watch later” list and start playing them, using my earbuds, when I’m going to sleep. (I flio my phone over so the light from the screen doesn’t distract me). They play continuously till the last one finishes and soothing voice is better than my sleep app. Of course i watch the videos later when I’m awake bc they’re so informative. I’ve often wished she had a podcast, even a video podcast, so I could then use my sleep timer option and podcasts play even with the screen is off.

Great video! Love the herbal series. The only thing I do differently when I make infused oils, is I never steep them in the sun as I feel it can draw strength from the herbs. I keep calendula/comfrey salve on hand at all times--such good salve. Looking forward to more in the herbal series. God bless!

I really appreciate your channel. Calendula belongs to the same family as those other great Vulneraries Arnica and Bellis perennis. The special kind of wounds indicating its use are lacerated wounds and suppurating wounds. It is the homœopathic antiseptic─it restores the vitality of an injured part, making it impregnable against the forces of putrefaction -John Henry CLARKE, M.D.

You give the best tutorials because you are a stickler for details. I like your idea to put something in between the oil and cover to absorb moisture. I worked with spring dandelions today for 5 hours to preserve them for 3 different purposes and am thinking I should have dried them first before adding oil to them. Another helpful tip you gave was how to test the consistency by putting a little on a plate then in the freezer for a minute. Also, for handmade salves without preservatives, it might be a good idea to wipe the container and lid with alcohol first and use a spatula when taking some out to avoid introducing bacteria into it. I've never made oils or salves before and don't want bacteria or mold.
