    Probably the best poetry film EVER made. I saw it twice at Zebra Poetry Film Festival--Munster 2018 and wept both times, but not out of sadness...out of joy for the hope that is shown at the end for the next generation with the young mother and her son charting a course and doing the dedicated work to change the world. Heart break? Heart MEND.

    To all the guys in the comments calling this video sexist : this is just art, describing a reality for a lot of women. It is a fact, not an exaggeration, this is REALITY for tons of women accross Ireland, Europe, and the world. This piece is mainly about abortion, not about demonizing half of the population. It is a FACT that women undergo a lot of verbal and physical forms of violence, throughout their life, and it is a fact that these violences are almost always perpetrated by men...
    I have a question for you : would you say that a poem denouncing an unfair bill or law for black people is demonizing white people ?? How do you solve an issue if you can't even describe it, talk about it, write poems about it? Just because some men are the cause of suffering for many women, we wouldn't be allowed to talk about these women and their experiences because some of you get all defensive ? Should I start getting mad about all these singers talking about breakups and saying how women are liars and cheaters and whatever else ? I mean that kind of is demonizing women. But of course I shouldn't get mad, because who am I to deny their experience of life ?
    who are you to deny Irish women's reality ?

    • @ciaranbrady4696
      @ciaranbrady4696 7 лет назад +7

      Could you please make a poem about the realities for fathers across Ireland please? Exclude all of the bad things though, like the lack of rights for unmarried fathers, automatic custody granted for mothers, how maintenance sways in favour of the mother, when custody is contested it still favours the mother?
      Thanks x

    • @ciaranbrady4696
      @ciaranbrady4696 7 лет назад +7

      Laura Chaignon I agree that there are huge issues with women, but these issues should not be dealt with by painting men to be vicious creatures who are the root of all evil. This will not solve the issue. The racism crisis in America was not solved by members of the black community attacking the white community and blaming them all. Maybe once women stop generalising men to illustrate their issues, it will be a lot easier to implement gender equality

    • @laurachaignon749
      @laurachaignon749 7 лет назад +11

      "these issues should not be dealt with by painting men to be vicious creatures who are the root of all evil." ... How do you do represent male violence against women without showing men behaving badly....? I'm curious. Also maybe you are exaggerating a bit here ? That's very strong vocabulary haha "There are huge issues with women", and I'll tell you, unfortunately, as you probably already know, the issues are not falling from the sky on our unprepared head, the issues are steming from men (at least the one addressed here) ... I am sorry about that, but you can't change the fact that it's reality, it's just how things are... we "use" men to illustrate our issues, because that's the only way to illustrate them... How do you talk about sexual harrassment, rape, or anything of the sort without actually talking about men ? I'm really curious to see how you'd do that...
      I have NEVER generalized men, and condemn such generalization, I truly doubt some people actually believe all men are evil, I mean he is a man himself, isn't he? I think the "generalization" vibe you get from it is because the author wanted to show that these issues aren't seldom occurances but a systemic, societal problem. And that's an important part. It's the tale of women, with a big w. Not just this woman or that woman and the rest are safe and sound. I whish it was the case obviously. He is showing men as a group (not as a whole though) in a place of power against lower class women. It is a 6 minutes video, maybe that's why it looks a bit manichean to you. Surely every woman meets a man she likes, or loves, and that makes her happy (friends, family, lovers, etc), but his purpose was not a depiction of a woman's life, but the nightmare around being unable to get an abortion. I agree, this is mostly a very negative message, a very dark picture.
      To be really honest with you, I understand that this very negative depiction of men makes a lot of you uncomfortable, like a lot of other things you hear and see in the media. I would be uncomfortable too, I would be ashamed, and angry to be represented as such. But don't you think the answer here is, instead of reacting to these unpleasant feelings, acknowledge your anger, your disgust, and accept that fighting against these behaviours is a good thing, that would benefit all of us ?
      Yes, there are extremist feminists (I am yet to meet one, though) but there are extremist anything. If you feel that gender issues is something you care about, go for it, talk to your friends, get involved. You know how I was saying that men are involved in most of women's issues, well it is also the other way around. what you said about divorce and child custody, these are problems that are related to women... That's why I truly believe that feminists are going to have to enter the discussion of men's rights, and men are going to have to accept to walk with feminists. It is going to be a bumpy ride, that's certain, and we are going to need a lot of compassion, a lot of love, empathy and be very courageous. But maybe we can do it. I have been to men's rights discussions in Canada and most of them acknowledged that the feminist fights were good inspiration for them. I don't believe this is a war, but a struggle, and that's very different.
      ps : If I can talk a bit more about his depiction of men, actually, I think the father of the wee boy is not demonized. I would say he is just the allegory of a generation of young men, who are doing their best but don't have the tools, the money or the choice to do so. I think this man here was shown as a victim of the abortion ban as well, utterly helpless. But that's just a poetic interpretation, I don't know if that's a good ground for debate.

    • @fartkerson
      @fartkerson 7 лет назад +19

      Counter suppression? This is not targeting all men -- I'm a man and I did not feel suppressed, I felt empathy -- this is targeting bigoted people. What are men suffering from exactly that makes them whine about women wanting to be in control of their bodies? I'm a man and I don't understand men like you with such pride that they can't even imagine what it's like to be in another person's shoes.
      Oh, so sorry to SUPPRESS you. I don't understand people who can't empathize with women! WTH. They have to go through body pains and social miseries that most men wouldn't be able to handle. Every woman has to grow up YEARS before boys do, as they bleed down their legs in embarassment. You know how they say women grow up faster than men? It's because they have to face biological reality in their youth and then continue to feel those changes as they give birth and their body changes over time and then menopause. Do you not understand science??
      How do you even justify your point of view? The Bible says so? What?! How is this counter suppression?! In high school my friends always made fun of the girls who got pregnant and had to take time off from school. Why? I never thought it was okay then and plenty of men don't think it's okay now. So, what YOU speak for all men? No, you don't. You speak for yourself. Selfish.

    To all the men commenting about men being 'demonized', sit down and listen to the poem again. Not once are 'all men' accused of being the problem. This problem is very very real, nonetheless, even if you aren't part of it. Yeah, you're a nice guy. That doesn't make it ok for grown men to catcall girls on the street. No, we cant talk about the fact that some men will openly call you a bitch because you don't want their number, because NOT ALL men do that. You can't know how it feels to be a woman in that situation. Obviouslly 'all men' aren't like this. Men like this are a small but hugely vocal minority. they create the problem as discussed in this video. Stop making it about you, nice guys. This poem was written to empower, to speak out against patriarchal constraints that, yes, exist even today. Instead of tearing this poem down, listen to the words and the message. They include everyone.
