Absolutely fucking stunning.
ChewingSand thank you for sharing this Hazel. Such powerful, beautiful words.
I've typed and retyped my comment as I can't think of the right words for this so I'll just agree with @ChewingSand :)
I keep going back to watch it - just one more time. Stunning.
You need to broaden your horizons. This is bog-standard stink. Google Mike Skinner/Howard Marks/John Cooper Clarke. These guys have been rattling this shit off effortlessly for years.
DoctorMeatDic Do they also share an Irish message of 'this lack of bodily autonomy is killing us'? Do share
I come back and watch this every so often and every time it hits the same. So powerful.
Such an immersive video and performance, can't stop watching it. Fair play Emmet, Dave, and the actress, keep it up lads.
'and the actress'
@@brianbriggz who is she so

Fantastic. Powerful and brilliant.
PROUD To Be White Great argument.
Probably the best poetry film EVER made. I saw it twice at Zebra Poetry Film Festival--Munster 2018 and wept both times, but not out of sadness...out of joy for the hope that is shown at the end for the next generation with the young mother and her son charting a course and doing the dedicated work to change the world. Heart break? Heart MEND.
Magnificent!
Melanie Murphy so are you x
Melanie Murphy ❤❤
a womans place is at home cooking and cleaning.
This is unbelievable! More emotion than most movies could portray.
To all the guys in the comments calling this video sexist : this is just art, describing a reality for a lot of women. It is a fact, not an exaggeration, this is REALITY for tons of women accross Ireland, Europe, and the world. This piece is mainly about abortion, not about demonizing half of the population. It is a FACT that women undergo a lot of verbal and physical forms of violence, throughout their life, and it is a fact that these violences are almost always perpetrated by men...
I have a question for you : would you say that a poem denouncing an unfair bill or law for black people is demonizing white people ?? How do you solve an issue if you can't even describe it, talk about it, write poems about it? Just because some men are the cause of suffering for many women, we wouldn't be allowed to talk about these women and their experiences because some of you get all defensive ? Should I start getting mad about all these singers talking about breakups and saying how women are liars and cheaters and whatever else ? I mean that kind of is demonizing women. But of course I shouldn't get mad, because who am I to deny their experience of life ?
who are you to deny Irish women's reality ?
Could you please make a poem about the realities for fathers across Ireland please? Exclude all of the bad things though, like the lack of rights for unmarried fathers, automatic custody granted for mothers, how maintenance sways in favour of the mother, when custody is contested it still favours the mother?
Thanks x
Laura Chaignon I agree that there are huge issues with women, but these issues should not be dealt with by painting men to be vicious creatures who are the root of all evil. This will not solve the issue. The racism crisis in America was not solved by members of the black community attacking the white community and blaming them all. Maybe once women stop generalising men to illustrate their issues, it will be a lot easier to implement gender equality
"these issues should not be dealt with by painting men to be vicious creatures who are the root of all evil." ... How do you do represent male violence against women without showing men behaving badly....? I'm curious. Also maybe you are exaggerating a bit here ? That's very strong vocabulary haha "There are huge issues with women", and I'll tell you, unfortunately, as you probably already know, the issues are not falling from the sky on our unprepared head, the issues are steming from men (at least the one addressed here) ... I am sorry about that, but you can't change the fact that it's reality, it's just how things are... we "use" men to illustrate our issues, because that's the only way to illustrate them... How do you talk about sexual harrassment, rape, or anything of the sort without actually talking about men ? I'm really curious to see how you'd do that...
I have NEVER generalized men, and condemn such generalization, I truly doubt some people actually believe all men are evil, I mean he is a man himself, isn't he? I think the "generalization" vibe you get from it is because the author wanted to show that these issues aren't seldom occurances but a systemic, societal problem. And that's an important part. It's the tale of women, with a big w. Not just this woman or that woman and the rest are safe and sound. I whish it was the case obviously. He is showing men as a group (not as a whole though) in a place of power against lower class women. It is a 6 minutes video, maybe that's why it looks a bit manichean to you. Surely every woman meets a man she likes, or loves, and that makes her happy (friends, family, lovers, etc), but his purpose was not a depiction of a woman's life, but the nightmare around being unable to get an abortion. I agree, this is mostly a very negative message, a very dark picture.
To be really honest with you, I understand that this very negative depiction of men makes a lot of you uncomfortable, like a lot of other things you hear and see in the media. I would be uncomfortable too, I would be ashamed, and angry to be represented as such. But don't you think the answer here is, instead of reacting to these unpleasant feelings, acknowledge your anger, your disgust, and accept that fighting against these behaviours is a good thing, that would benefit all of us ?
Yes, there are extremist feminists (I am yet to meet one, though) but there are extremist anything. If you feel that gender issues is something you care about, go for it, talk to your friends, get involved. You know how I was saying that men are involved in most of women's issues, well it is also the other way around. what you said about divorce and child custody, these are problems that are related to women... That's why I truly believe that feminists are going to have to enter the discussion of men's rights, and men are going to have to accept to walk with feminists. It is going to be a bumpy ride, that's certain, and we are going to need a lot of compassion, a lot of love, empathy and be very courageous. But maybe we can do it. I have been to men's rights discussions in Canada and most of them acknowledged that the feminist fights were good inspiration for them. I don't believe this is a war, but a struggle, and that's very different.
ps : If I can talk a bit more about his depiction of men, actually, I think the father of the wee boy is not demonized. I would say he is just the allegory of a generation of young men, who are doing their best but don't have the tools, the money or the choice to do so. I think this man here was shown as a victim of the abortion ban as well, utterly helpless. But that's just a poetic interpretation, I don't know if that's a good ground for debate.
Counter suppression? This is not targeting all men -- I'm a man and I did not feel suppressed, I felt empathy -- this is targeting bigoted people. What are men suffering from exactly that makes them whine about women wanting to be in control of their bodies? I'm a man and I don't understand men like you with such pride that they can't even imagine what it's like to be in another person's shoes.
Oh, so sorry to SUPPRESS you. I don't understand people who can't empathize with women! WTH. They have to go through body pains and social miseries that most men wouldn't be able to handle. Every woman has to grow up YEARS before boys do, as they bleed down their legs in embarassment. You know how they say women grow up faster than men? It's because they have to face biological reality in their youth and then continue to feel those changes as they give birth and their body changes over time and then menopause. Do you not understand science??
How do you even justify your point of view? The Bible says so? What?! How is this counter suppression?! In high school my friends always made fun of the girls who got pregnant and had to take time off from school. Why? I never thought it was okay then and plenty of men don't think it's okay now. So, what YOU speak for all men? No, you don't. You speak for yourself. Selfish.
Wow, the first argument I’ve seen on RUclips that didn’t include only “Fuck you” and “Stfu you gay fag” this argument had an actual structure, great job guys!👍🏻😂
Still came back here time to time. It's so good stuff.
Amazing!
Even better than when I saw it as part of RIOT.
Congrats Dave & Emmet and all involved :)
This is the first poem that has ever made me cry. Thank you Emmet, for writing this. For inhabiting that young woman's experience, and all women in her shoes.
It's amazing
Riveting. Congratulations on a brilliant piece of important writing/filmmaking.
I've been watching this video for years now.....I love it
Hair stands on my neck and I get teary eyed every time I watch this. I grew up in one of those housing estates as a young boy. So so powerful. Ordered the T-shirt. We should all be in awe of all Mná! Amazingly performed and directed. Makes me super proud of irish playwright and creation talent.
Speechless after the power of both script and performance. My words of praise cannot do this fine piece of work justice!!
This is indescribably brilliant. I have tears in my eyes, congratulations on producing such a powerful piece.
A naive girl loses her virginity to a naive boy. But her loss is a burden far greater than the guilt-free boy. 'Young one' is a single mother now, just like her mum. I'm astonished to see / hear a man expressing feminine indignation.
Dara Dynamite speak up. We never see you in real life. ever
Dara Dynamite I literally have never seen a man like that.
Dara Dynamite Sorry for coming off as sexist, I genuinely never meant to, it's just the truth, (In my experience anyway). It's obviously different elsewhere.
This is the greatest 6 Minutes and 52 seconds I have ever watched, thank you Emmett Kirwan for everything you do I love you. Yours Sincerely Oisin.
A beautiful piece of cinema and poetry. Thank you.
this was the most powerful thing I've ever seen
A very important video. Brilliantly made, written and performed. :)
Stunning, thank you. Some women marry decent men, whilst other women raise them ♥️
Truly
Wonderful Emmet! Blew me away!! Powerfull stuff. Well done.
This was so utterly powerful, I still get goosebumps after the third or fourth time taking it all in.
I've never cried so much. Thank You Emmet...for acknowledging the pain of a woman.
found myself standing and clapping in my room. amazing, absolutely fucking amazing
This poetry film achieves so much, in such a short space of time. I will emphasise also, WATCH THE ENDING, people. The film just keeps getting better, and better, and better. Very professionally written and edited. To be fair, it's one of the most 'polished' poetry movies I've seen to date. Love it!
this video isn't sexist or anything like it its a man telling the story of some young women in Ireland and the struggles they face it never once insulted us males
I'm so sad I'm not a native speaker and couldn't understand most of this, though the feeling came strong to me
Bedside Table "Native ?" it's in English.
Bedside Table yeah ye mad thing it's in English 😂😂😂
I'm not a native ENGLISH speaker
I like how surprised y'all are :p
To be fair, a non-Irish English speaker could have difficulty with it. Partly due to accent but also slang.
Fucking hell!! This is out standing work? Well done it's about time it's all said.. Irish Film Bord is the way there !
I'm actually speechless this is absolutely brilliant ❤
Brilliant and great that it's a males perspective but still do understanding of the reality of the situation. Amazing, powerful!
Gripping angle and delivery, you had me for the entire piece. .....that’s hard to do to a 54 year old man of the world.
I like how their tackling REAL topics in life and how a little boy could make ALL the difference
Absolutely amazing
Amazing.
I'm IRSH and i think this is absolutely true now we just need one for homelessness , to show ppl like this one that it needs to change put we done now lads
this is excellent. it isnt anti-man or anti-life, its against ignorance, double standards and crudeness.
“Anti-life” oh PLEASE. pro-choice isn’t anti-life. Pro-life, however, is by definition anti-choice and you fuckwads don’t care about the children after they’re born. Kay why ess
Outstanding.
So powerful. Fantastic work!
Well, that brought a tear to my eye.
Well done, Emmet! Very intense and gripping.
Strong message, beautiful performance! Thanks for this. Hopefully, it will change some minds.
Jaysis Christ what a performance! What a piece. Wonderful work
“In awe of all mnà”, and the break in his voice with the following “heartbreak” as he realises the enormity of the struggle that women like this face daily.
Breathtaking performance.
To all the men commenting about men being 'demonized', sit down and listen to the poem again. Not once are 'all men' accused of being the problem. This problem is very very real, nonetheless, even if you aren't part of it. Yeah, you're a nice guy. That doesn't make it ok for grown men to catcall girls on the street. No, we cant talk about the fact that some men will openly call you a bitch because you don't want their number, because NOT ALL men do that. You can't know how it feels to be a woman in that situation. Obviouslly 'all men' aren't like this. Men like this are a small but hugely vocal minority. they create the problem as discussed in this video. Stop making it about you, nice guys. This poem was written to empower, to speak out against patriarchal constraints that, yes, exist even today. Instead of tearing this poem down, listen to the words and the message. They include everyone.
Wow!! This is so powerful. Incredible poetry!
Absolutely amazing!!❣
My god! My hairs stand on end straight. What a freaking dilivery!
this is FUCKING DEADLY. Emmet Kirwan... You are the Next Seamus Heaney. Better than Seamus Heaney. A big Dublin 12, Crumlin Road Thank You from an Irish Immigrant across the pond. Who had to cross that other pond. Once. Who had the money and the daddy to pay for it. Though he too was from D12. You nailed it. Love from a Paddy Woman in the U.S.A. YOU FUCKING ROCK.
Unbelievable!!!! Masterpiece!!
thank you for spreading this message, absolutely amazing!!
Wow. This is incredible.
What a masterpiece
Met Emmet at kaleidoscope in Ireland this year.
He preformed this song and a few other ones, me and my dad where in absolute aw, I stuck around a little bit after his set was done and got a picture with him.
An honest, friendly outgoing genius who embodies what an Irishman should be.
Very unfortunate that he's not as known as he should be but regardless of his celebrity status, he's an absolute legend.
Intense .. pure genius. Felt every word
incredibly powerful.

Irish Young women / Mother's have it hard in these times and so do the young Fathers and Most parents of young kids in General. We should be very careful about what we take and interpret from all forms of media and how they portray stories of Young mothers and fathers. A Very well written and Spoken piece.
Thanks for the recognition of both me and my 'bastard childrens' travails and for making me and them feel so much better and stronger regarding our validity as quantifiable and qualitative members of a modern Irish society.
The only ones that matter are the ones that love and support you. (systematic issues aside) And there are plenty of Irish citizens, both male and female who do. Fuck the haters. Never take criticism from someone you wouldn't go to for advice.
this is amazing..
Perfection ❤️

Amazing and powerful! beautifully written, performed and filmed. well done! on point as well.
Just wonderful. As a stand alone performance it would be brilliant. Having written it as well it shoots further skywards. Real ideas on real issues in a flowing , melodic , touching , topical delivery with a clear message of book length in such a short time frame. Angry young man with much to say and many to say it to. Write on and make a difference.
Very powerful piece of work....wow!!
Love it.- Brilliant 'Heartbreak'!
Heart aches, in both right and wrong places. Great work of art and politics.
