    I do love your positive attitude about the immigration check. I for once, can't stand against authority flexing their power just to make a point. Just so you know, Malaysia - Thailand border is notorious for smuggling activities. Every year, assassin (yes for real), human trafficking, drug, weapon and etc cross the border unchecked and unstopped. The officer attitude is a bit stingy but I know what he have been through. Forgive and forget is a big thing.

      @Steve-Owens  7 лет назад +25

      I agree but there is always a context to every story, if you were there, you would not have seen a diligent border guard checking suspicious Luggage, I had 8 inch chef knife and set in the case that he didn't even look at. What you would have seen was Lazy Supervisor trying to look like the Boss in front of his Juniors, the clip you saw was just a fraction of his pompous manner but like you say, it's just best to let it roll, everyone has a bad day, I hope his next was somewhat better.. :)

    I still remember how I did this trip from KL to Bangkok two years ago. I travelled from KL to Butterworth from KTM train and stayed in Penang island 1 night. Next day crossed the border by Van and reached Hat Yai railway station where I stayed few hours at The Train Hotel until my second class sleeper train arrives at 6 PM. Then had a comfortable over night sleep and reached Bangkok next day morning. That was an exciting trip. You have done a great video!! Thanks for uploading- Nilan

    You touched one of my passions, Steve. Railroads. I spent a number of my younger years as an American railroad brakeman and have worked thousands of miles of both passenger and freight service. I'm ever fascinated by this mode of transport. According to Wiki, Malaysia and Thailand use meter gauge (1000 mm between rails) making it smaller than standard gauge (1435 mm). Standard is used in the UK, US and Australia (except for Australian High Speed). Did you notice a "rougher" ride on the narrower gauge? The wider gauge should provide greater stability. After standard gauge (55% of the world) comes Broad or Russian gauge (1500 mm) used on the Trans Siberian Railway. I would love to see you explore the Transib and the food of Mother Russia! I believe it's about a three-week journey across the entire distance from Vladivostok to Moscow. Keep traveling! Probably have to bring warmer clothing! LOL

    • @Steve-Owens
      @Steve-Owens  7 лет назад +1

      Fascinating Insight Milan and yes the ride is a more Rock and Roll Experience than the wider gauge for sure. Like you, I love train travel, I want to ride the Ghan on the Great Souther Rail here in Oz, it's a mighty fine journey. Hopefully I will show you it.. No Plans but it will happen one day.. :o)
      I must get you to watch this Video of mine Milan and tell me what you think ruclips.net/video/KwDFwEXdpHw/видео.html

      southeast asia mainland rail are all using meter gauge. it has disadvantages because of the narrow length between wheels. but it is too expensive to change the whole gauge size to standard size that is why we still using it. that electric train in malaysia is the meter gauge fastest train in the world although it can't be categorised as high speed train because max speed is under 200km/h. as a part of trans asian railway project which involves singapore, malaysia, thailand, myanmar, cambodia, laos, vietnam and china so it is more economical to use the existing and upgrade the line rather than build a new system.
      as in malaysia, although the main line is meter gauge, new rail line project are more likely to be standard size such as the new east coast railway where this project is totally a new line. it is more economical and easier to choose train using standard gauge for anew line because most rail system in the world are using standard gauge.

    namaste steve sir i'm your new subsciber and i love your vlog very informative its sad you faced some difficultiy at border check point they just doing theire duty i hope u forgive them i enjoyed alote keep it up have a good day

    • @Steve-Owens
      @Steve-Owens  7 лет назад +1

      When you see someone doing their Duty, you instinctively know they are doing so, when you see a boss trying to be silly to prove his power, it is also very easy to spot. This guy was NOT doing his job, that I guarantee you. but you can feel as you wish. I cross hundreds of borders and have seen good people doing their work, this was not that instance but you had to be there to see for yourself.. I don't share criticism lightly, it takes a great deal for me to do so..
      Why do you feel the need to protect people, for which you pay their salary, to do a service for the Public, if a politician, police officer or border guard who is paid out of your tax money doesn't do what they should, don't excuse them, that is the way rot sets in.. His Home, his Car, his Children's Tuition and the food on his table is all paid for from your taxes and you should expect him to make reasonable effort to police the border and in the meantime pay respect to those that abide by the rules not try to flex his power to pretend he is in someway better than you. Sorry but I do feel strongly about this..
      They did not search my Bags, I would say 100% they were making a point, Michele happened to ask them to be careful with an item which was Fragile and rather than be polite they then decided to open every bag and fawn through the items and try to make us as uncomfortable as possible, with very smug smiles and rude chatter amongst themselves, sadly for them I understand some of their obnoxious comments and I just smiled and let them get on with it. They never really showed any interest in the contents other than to be obstructive and slow and rude.... People like that should not have their jobs, the rot needs to be exposed and fixed.

    Im happy that the Customs did their job in protecting Malaysia, our country. No offences by the way...

    • @Steve-Owens

      How odd you should think so.. No offence either.
      They are paid very good money from Taxes paid by the "public" and they are servants of the public, whom pay their wages. Public meaning you and I and any one else that pays tax into that countries system.
      As such, they owe a duty of respect to all but people that break the laws they protect, nothing more nothing less.
      Their job is to protect a beautiful country and a wonderful People from miscreants bringing harmful stuff over the borders, not to try and intimidate tourists because they are having a slow day and want a bit of vile fun at the expense of others.. That is not a healthy way to work or to demonstrate "as correct" to Junior employees. So that which makes you "Happy" I find very sad

      Steve's Kitchen i am happy that they were intimidating...if the officers in your countru were 'so nice' to everyone that visits your country eventhough if they bring in drugs, will you be happy and feel safe???

      Yes I would, I don't believe in Borders, they are controlling the world like cattle, it's not anyones Planet it belongs to us all.

      He said he had Baht, but not enough Ringgit to pay for the Malaysian train so he paid for it using all the Ringgit he had & made up the difference in Baht (but the exchange rate was very bad).

    Custom in pandang besar must have to be very strict. This is because there is a lot of gun smuggling through border.

      Thanks Sonja XX 50 is about 1.14 Pounds, I did bite my tongue, I am not sure I was able to show what a hard time he gave us, just to look big in front of his junior staff.. But I suspect he may not realise just how stupid he looked, to us and them LOL :)
