We raised five daughters in the church and jeans were NEVER allowed (by my husband and my rules). They’re all grown/married/parents now, and they themselves still abide by the dress code they were raised with. Even though it’s not the norm, it can’t be denied that your behavior, attitude etc is affected by what you wear. I may be ‘old fashioned’, but I personally stand on the principle of reverence when worshiping the Lord.

We must dress in a way that demonstrates the importance of church to us, but we must also be welcoming and not discourage people from joining for worship if they are in anything less than a suit. A balance needs to be struck, but i do think most churches don't have high enough standards when it comes to attire these days. I particularly think those leading worship or preaching should wear sunday best

I used to wear dresses and wore my best. I’m a senior on SS and I don’t have the money to dress up like I used to but I’m unable to go to church due to my disability, live alone, and don’t drive. Now, my best would be slacks or jeans, with a nice top. I think God understands that. I think rather than not go, I would be happy to see people that wore sloppy top and shorts. Doesn’t mean you aren’t saved. ♥️🙏🏻 or that you don’t need salvation. A friend of my late husband wore cut-offs and T-shirt to his funeral (in a church) and I was just so happy to see him come, despite what he was wearing.

My wife and I lived with my father and my step mom for a while and they attended church - it was a wacky church without proper leadership and theology - but they wanted us to attend with them while living there so we did.
We have never owned fancy clothes so we went in nice jeans and nice shirts. My father was very upset at us and kept telling me, "You're going to church in THAT? Go put slacks on or something!"
While at first I thought he was just seeking to revere God, I realized very quickly that at their church, all the couples would have contests about who was dressed the best. The women would wear more make up than a clown with outrageous and immodest clothing, and the men would try to wear their most expensive suits to try and outdo the other men. It was all about appearances and my father was ashamed for us to wear regular clothing. I believe you go to church in what you have and you don't have to dress fancy at all. God doesn't look on the outward appearance of man, He looks on the heart. A homeless person can walk into church and be saved that day, and he won't be wearing a tuxedo, would he?

There's a saying here in Australia that the only people who wear suits outside the city are real estate agents. What of the Bible telling women not to adorn our outer selves with beautiful things fits with this "Sunday best" concept of clothing. The Pharisees would quite agree. This concept of caring about wardrobe is a man's tradition born about a lack or inability to control aspects of another's life. A man should care about his appearance, every man did in the Bible, but the extent usually went as far as appearing to be caring and providing for his family. This dress style emphasis is completely superficial and unbiblical. It's a pretty cut and dry case. If you're convicted to do so, do so. But the more convictions you have the weaker your faith is. Paul says so in Romans 14. An important passage people forget about. As he also references holding one day more sacred than another.

Why is it that everyone who thinks men should wear a suit and tie to church always compares it to the other extreme of looking like a slob or an unmade bed? The real question we should ask is what is appropriate attire for church.
The basic Biblical idea behind what we wear for church is that we are showing honor (1 Pet 2:17). The traditional view is that appropriate attire is what one would wear going to stand before a judge at court. For men (in the West) this means a conservative suit and tie. This is a not a fashion show to parade ourselves around and be seen. We dress with honor, respect, and reverence, not to stand out.

If you think you're audience with God is only at church on Sunday then you must be missing the presence of the spirit in your daily life. Do you get up in the morning and do your devotions in a suit? Do you not think your devotiona are important? What about when you pray? These expectations and rules are silly and it places burdens on people that neither Christ nor the Apostles taught. However, You should never present yourself as a disorganized slob in representing Christ anywhere.

How about we get up a couple hours early and pray ask God to reveal our sins to us so we can confess them before we walk into church. How about we pray and ask God to make us receptive not only so we can hear the word being taught but also so we can minister to the people around us, how about that? I don't think showing up the church cled scantily is appropriate not saying that. I mean we are in God's presence everyday so why don't we just wear suits all the time?
