Vocals can be one of the easiest things we have to mix on a record OR they could leave us beating our hands against the wall after a long mixing session.
Today, I'm going to help you make mixing vocals a much simpler task by showing you my go-to vocal chain featuring only the plug-ins within the new UAD Spark subscription service.
More importantly, I'm going to talk a bit about what I'm thinking and WHY I choose certain plug-ins when I'm mixing vocals.
A few things you'll learn in this video:
- My exact plug-in chain
- EQ before or after compression
- The parallel compression setting I use on 99% of my mixes and how to set it up correctly
- And more...
My hope is for you to not only steal my settings and deliver awesome vocals on your next mix but for you to learn the why behind this chain so you can begin to hear what a vocal needs and deliver professional-sounding vocals. Видеоклипы

8:48 you could also put that tape recorder plugin on a bus and send your dry vocal to it on a send and use the fader of the bus to add that coloration to the stereo out
I subscribe your channel now. As a SV ai vocals user and a UAD Spark user, your tips are very useful and helpful. 👍

Thank you for this!
Totally my pleasure! Thanks for watching!
Great video.. thanks
Thanks, Henrik!
The one thing I thought this UAD Spark video on vox could have used was the non UAD Clariphonic. It does for vocal clarity what nothing in any other plug can do - make it clearer without being bright, harsh, whatever negative word can be applied. My ear thinks everything from 5k up could be high shelved and brought back better with Clariphonic. One ol guy's .02.
Let’s go! Haha
thanks for the gems
Thanks for watching them! 🙏🏻
Pls more
Can this also be done in the kirchhoff plugins? So useful this technique. Just came across the best video on vocal production by a producer named Nick Mavromatis and I realised how it’s not all about mixing. His production on vocals is just INSANE. You should the vocal production episode in particular.
i love pushing these plugins to get some saturation, that usually results in a rather distorted mix but I dont think im overdoing it yet, when we compare to declan mckennas zeros album for example, which has an amazing and very distorted mix.
What are your opinions on this though? I feel like making every sound in your mix sauce and saturated will just make the entire mix less saucy and saturated
Love the API section. But man, I could hear that distortion. I’m curious why you didn’t pad the input down so it wasn’t overdriving the unit. Love the video. Just had to ask.
I did that video after a long day of mixing. It’s possible I didn’t hear it at that point! 😂 Thanks for watching, Larry!
👏👏👏
not gonna lie. you literally convinced me to get uad spark. i tried it a month and did not like the available compressors. now that you taught how to use them i gotto thank you.
Great value they're bringing over there! Thanks watching!
Where are the Townsend Lab plugins?!
What is the song name ?
Love these! Thanks David.
Hey, I'm having trouble accessing the "Path to pro" material. I've been emailing support with no replies. So I'll just nudge you here on that ;)
Awe, man! I’ll check and see what’s going on via email and hit you back! Thanks for the heads up!
I found you! You'll have a couple of emails coming from me now. Thanks for the follow-up, Jon!
@@TheMixAcademy Thanks. I received all the emails. Looking forward to diving back in! 🙏 Thanks for all you do.
@@JonPlettdrums right on, man! Thanks again for the support!
Hey David, I've also been reaching out via email support with no replies. Thanks so much!
What headphones are you wearing?
Sennheiser HD 650's paired with Realphones calibration. Thanks for watching!
im conviced that you need analog gear in your vocals before it goes in the daw cuz I followed step and it still sounds like shit lol
It all starts with the source... A great singer singing a great melody... Even a decent microphone in a controlled space. Analog gear is awesome but a poll from Pro Tools Expert revealed that most people actually prefer the sound of a clean preamp for vocals. I believe the top vote was for the old Digidesign MBox.
@@TheMixAcademy in that case why are artist still using 20 thousand dólar vocal chains ??? If all I need is a focusrite?
@@ezurg01 Why does one drive a Tesla? Or wear a Rollex? www.pro-tools-expert.com/home-page/2015/10/2/the-ultimate-microphone-pre-amp-shoot-out-the-results
@@TheMixAcademy I check all seems like all pream is the same
