I first heard them a couple of years ago, but becoming a huge fan didn't take very long. They are all amazingly talented in their respective fields.
They draw on a wide range of influences, usually all of them play together although for some numbers they split the band into various elements, all electric, all acoustic or various combinations.
The vocalist is also an excellent pianist and a Kenbu dancer (fans and katana).
What else can I say, I think they are bloody fantastic.

They are amazing! That was a first for me, never heard of them either. All the instruments were great: I love me some slap bass! The vocalist is really good and so is the backing vocalist!
    Thanks Barry!

First of all merry X-mas to you all ! WGB is a Superband of the highest order and their live shows are second to none ! All 8 members are handpicked by vocalist Yuko and they are all masters and teachers of their instruments. Now if you wanna go deeper in Wagakki i recomment 3 different songs who will show you what they are all about. #1 "Kyoukasuigetsu" + "Tsukini sakebuyoru" live from REACT tour 2019 ruclips.net/video/aWlMc-pbDc8/видео.html . #2 "Ikusa" + "Hakushu Kassai" live from Dai Shinnenkai 2018 (New Years concert) ruclips.net/video/Kli0M-dmoeo/видео.html . #3 "Tengaku" live from Dai Shinnenkai 2018 ruclips.net/video/kSJNMQrrgvo/видео.html . Friendly little advice ... if you wanna cover more Wagakki make sure you use CC W or Frank Garcia YT channel. They have everything and some more from Wagakki and never ever get blocked. Enjoy your ride with a top 5 live act worldwide !

Welcome to the world of Wagakki Band.
They have 100+ songs for you to play with. They have 6 albums 2 EPs, several live albums and singles.
Officially started in 2013, but they have been going since autumn 2012.
The first instrument you wondered what was is a Shamisen. It has three strings and is played by Beni Ninagawa.
Then you have a 25 string Koto played by Kiyoshi Ibukuro.
Shakuhachi (The Flute) is played by Daisuke Kaminaga.
Wadaiko (drums) is played by Kurona.
Yuko Suzuhana - vocals, founder of WGB
    Machiya - guitar, vocals, arrangement
    Asa - bass
    Wasabi - drums
I think the song "Guernica" is about the German terrorist bombing of the Basque city of Gernika in April 1937. The bombing was carried out on behalf of the nationalist rebel force during the Spanish Civil War. An estimated more than 1,000 people were killed, an unknown number were injured, and the city was virtually razed to the ground. The German force, called the Legion Condor, was in Spain as a contribution of National Socialist Germany and was under the command of the Spanish Nationalist High Command under Francisco Franco.
Pablo Picasso created a painting "Guernica" which gives an artistic representation of the event.
Try Homura, Senbonzakura, Hakushu Kassai, Or the collaboration with Amy Lee Bring me to life.

Don't worry about knowing the instruments -- just enjoy. Long, flat zither is a koto. Stringed instrument is a shamisen. Vertical flute is a shakuhachi. In addition to regular drums they also use Japanese taiko drums. Lead singer Yuko Suzuhana blends rock with Japanese enka-style singing. All difficult and this band kills. Wagakki Band is one of the few to blend traditional Japanese and modern rock well. Check a song called Senbonzakura. Don't need to know Japanese. Just enjoy.

8 well crafted musicians with love for tradition and modern. They want to preserve the culture and make it accessible to the younger generation and also introduce Japanese culture worldwide. What else can be said ? You can see it their music.

Nik, get ready for a quality infused & deep rabbit hole. Yes, these guys almost always those same instruments, & the compositions use most of them all the time. They do split into smaller sub groups too, & show off more styles. They play fast western type stuff & slow ballads . They even play Jazz w/ those Japanese instruments too ! Check out the jazzy " Synch-ronicity", & "Starlight", in which, both include Yuko doing her awesome job on the piano. Deep hole that even Lex will enjoy !!!

I keep this collection of links handy for people who're just diving into the deep deep ocean of Japanese rock. Gotta start with Wagakki Band:
ruclips.net/video/bVZiM2vEVsM/видео.html (Homura + Akatsuki no Ito)
ruclips.net/video/90QRPSZDzsA/видео.html (Rokuchounen to Ichiya Monogatari) They started out covering vocaloid tunes
    ruclips.net/video/LQ27aPBukdM/видео.html (Kishikaisei)
ruclips.net/video/8SNV8s8FJBk/видео.html (Synchronicity) Yeah, jazz! Cool, huh?
ruclips.net/video/hk1GtYK7BJM/видео.html (Bring Me to Life, collab. with Amy Lee)
ruclips.net/video/xup7x7r38Q0/видео.html (Yoshiwara Lament) written by bassist Asa
    ruclips.net/video/BgJnyblunrE/видео.html (Hangeki no Yaiba)
ruclips.net/video/wRaP6TmKTQE/видео.html (Senbonzakura) [back to vocaloid (Hatsune Miku to be precise) cover, their usual closer]
    Personnel:
Suzuhana Yuko - band leader, lead vocals (she also plays keyboards, teaches trad. Japanese poetry recital, and is a fan dancer and sword dancer)
Ibukuro Kyoshi - koto (married to Yuko; they have a baby daughter)
Ninagawa Beni - shamisen (she took over vocal duties for some shows around the time of Yuko's baby's birth and a bout of illness last fall, IIRC)
Kaminaga Daisuke - shakahachi (extremely difficult to master bamboo flute)
    Kurona - wadaiko (Japanese drums)
    Asa - bass, occasional vocals
    Wasabi - drums
Machiya - guitar, lead and backing vocals

The music of this band is really great and the singer is good, but I have "problems", listening to music and don't understand a word. In Spanish or French you can at least understand the title and pick up one or the other word, but Japanese .... no chance. And so I listen to single songs once in a while, just like the Love Bites and Baby Metal and Band Maid reactions, but that's it. Most of the fun is watching the musicians ...

    Well,
Either many folks are Christmas shopping or sleeping, but for once I'll be the 2nd or 3rd commenter to my shock that more are not chiming-in about the reaction and band.
I may have heard about these guys but don't remember the name. I bet most Asian countries have their own (Folk) "Metal" bands that play traditional instruments and sing about their history. As 1 that sticks out from Taiwan "Chthonic" (pronounced: _Sonic_ ) though they play western instruments, with various guests that play traditional instruments and are a combo of Black Metal, Death Metal and Prog Metal.
But this was VERY cool music and the stage show is impressive (like something out of Blade Runner). I was looking up the instruments because I used be heavily into Japanese Folk music, so they are; Koto (Zither-like flat harp), Tsugaru Shamisen (3-string-like banjo), Taiko (traditional drums), Shakuhachi (bamboo flute) with Guitar, Bass and Drums. So by wiki they are considered "Folk Rock" & Metal (so take that with a grain of salt), but they do sound Proggie. I love the combination of sounds, and I have a thing for anything Asian sounding (or Oriental/Persian, Middle Eastern/Arabic). I would presume there are more bands like this in Japan, and probably featured on any musical show that is hosted by guitarist "Marty Friedman", as he has played with VERY traditional female vocalists and hosted many TV shows.
Wiki also says; Their music videos for the songs "Tengaku" (天樂) and "Senbonzakura" (千本桜) have attracted millions of views on RUclips. They have played live in Asia, Europe, and the United States.
So they are as popular as can be with International fans (I guess as popular as we are with Progressive Rock, Prog Metal and Metal subgenres go). They MUST have their hard core fans, so I hope they find this channel 🙂.
    - Thanks for this Barry, and my _reaction_ was like yours Nick, very intent in listening and watching :).
I sure HOPE _more_ folks watch and try something new and out of the norm. It certainly needs more views.
