    Pretty good video.
I got my Ba in music in 2013 and got my MBA in 2014 because at that time, everyone had a BA or BS, and I needed to set myself up to stand out and got a masters.
Now we are getting to a point where everyone almost needs a masters.
I would say if you’re gonna do anything? Double major? Make one of them business. It’s such a fluid degree. Marketing, accounting, HR, sales, IT, MIS, economics, etc.
You can almost do anything with it (in terms of landing a job).
With automation, you almost have to choose a career that will 1) get you decent money 2) won’t be phased out.
Anything that requires you to be with people + has a demand for? Go that route.
Go into IT. So many people (like myself) know Jack squat about computers and information systems.
There will always be a need.
Business, go into operations, or accounting, or HR where you’re leading a team of people.
I work in accounting, and I’m having to learn put myself ahead of the curve with coding because soon high schoolers who know how to code and know that language can easily beat me out of a job if I don’t ever learn it or adapt my skill set.
So I say always aim for a degree that will land you in a place that will always be at the epicenter of adaptation and innovation so you can earn a decent living and always fine tune your skills.
Thank you for coming to my TedTalk

Great vid. To be honest instead of double majors I look at it as "enhancement majors". That is, any second degree which improves your overall ability to do work in your first degree. These are majors that are common to most industries so you can "get in" and enable you to lobby for the job you really want. Business, Information Technology, Business Analytics and Education fit the bill pretty well IMO.

Shane, i'm in favor of marketable double majors but even more in favor of getting a single undergrad followed by a grad degree in the secondary topic. The reason is that double majors tend to be perceived as "more of the same" whereas grad degrees are necessary for many upper level positions that an undergrad would not be qualified for. I think that getting lots of education in one's chosen profession is a very good idea though. for me, it has helped tremendously to have a broad education in terms of job security, mastery of the topic which helps to reduce stress in the workplace, and advancement. however this only holds true if the skills are marketable and being applied in the workplace. if those hold true then you'll soon be recognized as the resident expert.

I did a double degree in IR and linguistics and I have to say although it's a great dream, it's kind of unrealistic. I genuinely think it'd be a better idea and open many many more doors for you if you studied economics or statistics in addition to a foreign language instead (multiple languages, really, and something more niche than romance languages). Literally everyone who wants to work in government or international organizations has the exact same degrees and speaks the same languages. Unless you go to a top university and have amazing internships you won't stand out, it's a degree that's not specialized enough to have a lot of good options. With economics you could easily find a good job and get into an organization like the UN with a lot of work experience. Out of everyone I know who did a degree like this many of us have traveled, many of us have worked abroad and pretty much everyone I know has just ended up being a teacher, a lawyer or doing some totally unrelated work they could've done without those degrees. I absolutely loved my studies but if I knew then what I know now I'd have chosen something more practical and specific with good job opportunities. Specifically economics.

Good video! I am currently studying BSc Quantitative Economics and Finance. I am bit worried about my future because it is hard to get started with a job with just Quantitative Economics degree, but I've been coding casually for 2 years and now I am doing Data Science program online. So, After finishing my degree I plan on working for a year in Data Science industry, and then going for Masters in Computer Science. My end goal is to be Data Scientist and Software Engineer, I want to make sure I have solid professions lined up. Besides that, I know it will sound cliché but I want to build tech business and do freelancing work on the side and those degrees will definitely help me a lot.
    Thanks for these videos Shane!

Manny I think he means like whatever stem major you go for you apply it your other passion. Like if you choose neuroscience and theater you could do research on people’s brain reactions to different theater sounds

    • @yt_nh9347
      @yt_nh9347 3 года назад +1

You need to double major in something that makes sense to a business. Theater and neuroscience are completely different industries and skill sets in one does not translate well to the other.
For example i did a double degree in electrical engineering and business which gives me technical expertise as well as knowledge of key business areas like economics and accounting. This is highly desirable as they are both key components of most businesses and i am working on getting an engineering management role in future (currently early career engineer on 96k a year)

Actually, the organization that sponsored me said that I can't do a double major without paying for it upfront on my own, so I ended up doing a combined major of math and physics since that's what my university provided me. The major is still one single major, but it is the result of a combined version of math and physics, so I could figure out which one I wanted to specialize in.
Hopefully, that kind of major would lead me somewhere happy! 😁
