Leo, you write your diary in a foreign language? Btw speaking about linguistics. Recently on RUclips I got a recommended video about Dutch language (probably because I watched your video and you are from Nedherlands). People were saying phrases in Dutch. I was confused, because I heard strong/vibrating/rolling "Italian" "R" sound and soft "French"/"German" with "English" "R". Who knows does "official" Dutch have all these pronunciations of "R" or its because those people were from different parts of the country with different dialects? Also I see a lot of Japanese (pop) culture fanboys here. Correct me if Im wrong, but Japanese language doesnt have clean "sh" sound. Almost everytime it sounds like "s" and only in some cases it sounds like "sh". But not like clean "sh", rather something between "s" and "sh".

@@jus_sanguinis I'm pretty sure standard Dutch uses all those rhotic sounds and there are different rules on how each one is employed, but also I don't think it matters which one you use because people will understand you anyway.

@@jus_sanguinis Japanese is structured around syllables, with a consonant+vowel. The basic syllables starting with "s" are sa, shi, su, se, so. That is why one often sees "shi" vs other sh-sounds. There are ways to make other syllables starting with "sh", like sha, shu, sho, but this was a very basic & short explanation. :)
My plan for my reading is simple right now: Lord Of The Rings. That's it.

I'm also reading LOTR this is my first time with these books, I'm on the two towers
AMAZING!! I just finished the series for the first time recently and I love it so much!! It's my new favorite series now and I've been obsessed with the books and movies for the past three months! I'm currently reading the hobbit and eventually I'll get to the Silmarillion. The reason I got to read them is I took a Fantasy lit class in college and The Fellowship of the Ring was one of the things we had to read. While the rest of the class moved on to other books/short stories, I was stuck in Middle Earth and instead of reading the short stories for the class I was too busy reading LOTR, watching LOTR theatrical versions, watching LOTR extended editions on repeat, watching cast interviews/behind the scenes/meme videos. And now both the books/movies are my biggest obsession and I'm probably going to reread the books again soon. (I reread FOTR after we read it in class because I had to speed read it the first time bc I procrastinated and speed reading+LOTR=not a good idea). But yeah have fun and hopefully you love it too!! Sorry for long response but I'm super excited about LOTR :D
@@kaitlyng7850 the books are very good obviously but I haven't felt like they have sink in for me yet, I'm enjoying them but I feel they're a little bit dense for me even though a song of ice and fire are also dense and I love them
@@angelmarquez5153 Yeah I feel that way as well-- or at least felt that way. Certain chapters were definitely slower but overall I really loved it and even the slow chapters I found I was perfectly okay reading through. I had to change my reading style though, because of the books being pretty dense and descriptive. I normally read really quickly and binge through books but I could not do that with LOTR. I could read maybe 1-2 chapters in one sitting max because I had to read them slowly and carefully. Amazing series, but definitely had to make some adjustments in order to understand and follow along!!

Have you heard of Murakami? He's one of the most famous Japanese writers, he writes non fiction and fiction. Also, his works have lots of magical realism!

better to go for hiromi kawakami, banana yoshimoto to start with japanese lit. natsuo kirino (out) and keigo higashino (devotion of suspect x) are great thriller/mysteries if youre looking for that as well. cheers leonie!
@@dex7615 I love Japanese trillers/mysteries! The devotion of suspect X is one of my favourites. I rarely hear western booktubers recommend it
Yess, I made my first foray into Japanese literature reading The Wind-Up Bird Chronicle in Dutch, I've never read anything like it. Absolutely magical. *Long...* But magical.
I've read some more Japanese literature since, looking forward to jump back into Murakami!
Also - yeah, his female characters are, uh, something.
I just wanted to mention the other Murakami, Ryu not Haruki. Ryu's writing is a bit darker than Haruki, but both are good.
I'm on a Japanese fiction kick too! I read No Longer Human last month and gave it three stars. To put it in a very simplified manner, it's more the diary of a depressed man than a morally gray character.
I've also read Thrist for Love by Yukio Mishima, which could fit into the whole "unhinged woman" type of story. It's about intensiev jealous love and the lengths we're willing to go for it. It's also increddibly written and quite informative about Japanese religions.
just recently finished the cruel prince trilogy!! I read the first one back in the summer and honestly wasn't too into it, not like it was bad but just didn't feel like continuing it but then like a week ago I randomly picked the series back up again and completely devoured the other 2 books!! highly recommend continuing with this trilogy if the first one doesn't completely do it for you!
I highly recommend The Storygraph! It's like Goodreads but completely better. It helps you a lot to choose books depending on your mood since it has filters for that and chooses from your to read shelve (you can easily upload your information from Goodreads there) Buddy reads can also be done, there they could join and sign up for The Cruel Prince.
I still need to read Secret History too, maybe I should if you're going to. I remember liking Crime and Punishment; I have Dostoevsky's Devils on my tbr for someday.
Japanese Literature! I was actually going to suggest some Yukio Mishima, but I see you already have The Sailor Who Fell from Grace with the Sea. He has a sort of tetralogy starting with Spring Snow I have too. There's a classic like Kokoro by Natsume Soseki, Snow Country by Yasunari Kawabata, or something by Kobo Abe's Woman in Dunes, Ark Sakura, Ruined Map. Something more recent is A True Novel by Minae Mizumura which is a loose Wuthering Heights retelling in post WWII Japan.
I really loved 'Before the coffee gets cold'! Definitely recommend it if you're looking for translated Japanese fiction :)
I just got a copy of that for my birthday, I’m super excited to read it! I would recommend The Miracles of the Namiya General Store, it’s really great.

@@Eren-vb8ud I really liked it! It was touching and earnest. There were a lot of characters and balancing them was a little tough early on but their intertwining stories were really the heart of the book. I haven’t gotten to any of the sequels but I thought the book worked well as a standalone.
@@thejustinwestra Thats nice! I’m reading it right now and about to reach the third chapter. I consider it to be a very sweet and light book, its not complicated and its easy to understand what is going on. Will you consider reading the next book of this series?

It is surprisingly interesting to see people planning their reading experience, but you are making it something special. I hope you will make it through Crime an Punishments as for me Dostoyevsky in general is an author whose books you should try to read and decide if you love it or hate it (there is no middle, trust the russian, who was forced to read it back at school)
You should definitely read A Starless Sea when you’re in the mood for fantasy! It’s quite a reflective book and definitely a 5⭐️ rating for me.
I know you didn't even consider it for your tbr this month but I would high key recommend pride and prejudice for spring time🌸😅.
Jane Austen's books always remind me of sunshine and picnics and I think it's kind of the perfect balance between classic intellectual book and funny romance that I personally really enjoy😇 (my personal recommendation for Austen novels would be Emma and Northanger Abbey btw) especially during spring☀️.
Also, yes to a book about japanese translated fiction☕!!
Pride and prejudice was my childhood show to watch and I finally read it this year! One of my absolute faves now and currently reading Emma which I also love! I enjoy Jane Austen's language so much

Oooo if you like stories about twisted characters, you probably will like The Sailor Who Fell From Grace With the Sea!! I really liked that book and the author's life was also absolutely fascinating and adds a whole other weird layer to the reading experience. Some other authors I recommend for getting into Japanese lit are Yoko Ogawa, Sayaka Murata, Haruki Murakami, and, if you end up liking Mishima, you might also want to try Kobo Abe
Not sure if you've read the Starless Sea by Erin Morgenstern, but the vibes in that book are absolutely immaculate and it's literally a book about books. It's the kind of book to read with in the evening, by a fireplace (or at least a lit candle), curled up by a fireplace and under some warm, fuzzy blankets. Also the kind of book to read alone in a car or a greenhouse or better yet, a library -- some sort of enclosed space that doesn't restrict your breathing too much but just enough to feel cozy. I read it in a student lounge at my university and got through half the book just on a semi-comfy armchair with my friends working silently next to me. For me, it was the kind of book that stuck around, haunting vacant areas in my mind.
I look forward to your thoughts on the Secret History! I read this for a class and absolutely loved the experience of reading it while reading it -- not too sure what my thoughts are right now, but it does have a lingering, almost spiritual (haha) effect.

a really good translated japanese fiction read is there is no such thing as an easy job, AMAZING read and so fun
i read no longer human a few weeks ago and it was SOOO good!! its not for everyone but anyone who has struggled/is struggling with depression
is going to really relate to this character. would 10/10 recommend!!

re: crime and punishment, don't be too hard on yourself. classics are hard to get through, and sometimes you just need to put them down and pick them up later. it took me about a year and a half to get through Middlemarch and it's now one of my favourite books ever! the publication history means the stories were written to be read slower, so really you're just reading it the way you're meant to (or that's what I tell myself lol)
I read the cruel prince recently and loved it a lot. I never thought I'd read that book tbh, but I'm glad I read it. I'm excited for you to read it soon

Omg, I can relate to the bullet journal thing. Somehow I've been keeping up for (I think) over two years now, but I've been simplifying it a lot along the way. The one thing that is still quite a lot of work now is my habit tracker, but aside from keeping a loose insert with a monthly tracker I haven't been able to find a way to make that quicker. The thing I can probably relate to most is the Dunglish hahahaha. Bilingual problems.

Ooh! Mishima is such an amazing writer! I personally think if you want a morally gray character and a kind of strange plot, go for ‘Temple of the Golden Pavillon.’ The protagonist falls in love with a building. It’s so bizarre. Loved it!

I also want to read Iron Widow soon! I was going to buy it and then it was gifted to me, and I finally got through some other more urgent books so I'm going to be starting that tomorrow or even tonight maybe. Especially since I'm subscribed to the author's RUclips channel and love her content, I'm excited to read it.
Lonely castle in the mirror is GREAT, I highly recommend. It made me teary. The magical realism is hardcore and I loved that.

So curious to hear your thoughts on The cruel prince, I'm hoping you like it enough to continue the series. I think the consensus on the book community is that it starts alright, gets better on the second book and the third one is just too short, but a solid series anyway.
Given your 'contemporary twisted student's mood' I think you might like In my dreams I hold knife. ALso, both Lonely castle in the mirror and Iron widow are on my tbr, I hope to read them soon.

I am reading a retelling of Greek mythology called The Tapestry of Fate which is part of a multiple mythology series focused on apocalypse myths. The theme for my bookclub this month is to read the books that has been on my tbr the longest!! I will be reading Night Film by Marisha Pessl. It's been on my shelf for over 5 years and I am very intimidated by it. So we shall see how that goes. But first I do need to finish off Piranesi, so I hope I will be able to do that this week!
Since you mentioned japanese lit - I higly recommend you try something from Haruki Murakami - I think you will love it 😊 It's weird contemporary mixed with magical realism and it's just great. My personal recommendation would be Kafka on the Shore, it's one of the best books ever written.🌸🐬
Btw I know you've read and enjoyed Girls With Sharp Sticks, so I just wanted to let you know that it is a trilogy, so you might be interested in picking the other two books 🌵😊
Regarding Japanese literature, I highly recommend Banana Yoshimoto, any book by her is awesome but I think Kitchen is a good one to start with.

@@alwayswantingtochange I like Amrita, N.P and Goodbye Tsugumi. I am currently reading High and Dry (first love) in Japanese and I am in love with the whimsical illustrations that accompany the writing.

I was literally just thinking about The Cruel Prince when you mentioned it 😂 i read it recently and really enjoyed it, which surprised me due to a lot of polarised opinions I've seen around booktube over the years. I have a feeling you'll love it though because there are some pretty messed up characters in it which should go nicely with your recent interest in twisted young characters!

I also find myself coming back to pen and paper when things get very overwhelming. Something about writing it down makes me feel more accountable haha
In my opinion, Crime and Punishment is kinda slow and a tough one so don't feel forced to read it in one breath, you can rest and pick it up later :) But it's become one of my favorites ^^

I'm very into japanese lit but I felt that Before the Coffee was average and you could feel it was adapted from a play
I just finished it and I agree!! It wasn't bad per se, but I was expecting to feel more. I'd be interested to see what the play is like and whether if I feel more connected to it.

You should try reading Crime and Punishment episode by episode maybe! I haven't read it so I don't know how long the episodes are but it helps me get through big chonkers like that by splitting it up and reading fun stuff in between, which it sounds like that could work well if C&P is already broken up into easy-to-separate chunks!

I really liked Before the Coffee Gets Cold but the writing isn’t everyone’s cup of tea (pun intended lol). I read that it’s meant to be a play so I’d be aware of that going into it. I’m a big fan of Japanese lit especially Murakami. I’d love to hear your opinion on more Japanese books and maybe find new recommendations 🤓

The Aosawa Murders by Riku Onda is such a great japanese novel, that has those dark academia vibes (young people being pulled to v!olence). I finished it yesterday and it's one of the best books I read in 2022

If you wanna get through Crime and Punishment, please read it in English. I read Wordsworth edition it's so good and fun! English version is much shorter than the copy you have

Can I suggest that you might enjoy Lolly Willowes by Sylvia Townsend Warner. It's a book that starts off as one thing and then takes one of the greatest turns into something else of any book I've read. It's got a great central character and it is nice and short. I really think you'll enjoy it based on what you enjoy reading but I can't say much else without spoiling it. And it definitely - like Piranesi - rewards coming to it unspoiled. Mishima is an interesting writer. I read Confessions of a Mask recently. I'd also recommend Tokyo Ueno Station by Miri Yū as a modern Japanese novel. Nice video again. Thanks.

No Longer Human is an awesome read! It's sort of a semi autobiography.
