There's something so unique about Merle Haggard's voice, I love it. Wish this song was longer.

You should react to “Branded Man” by Merle. For some reason this is a short version of the song.

Merle was actually in San Quentin. That's where he was in the "audience" for Johnny's show. RIP Hag. You left us so much great music.

speaking of turning his life around, this was Merle's very first number one song, he was well on his way to becoming a legend after this song

I was too young to appreciate the moment. But, I saw him at a state fair in Montana in the 80s. Glad I have that memory. Thank-you for bringing that back to me.

FYI, Merle Haggard was in San Quentin, not Folsom Prison. An understandable mistake, since San Quentin was Johnny Cash's other prison album besides Folsom Prison.

Following this was ‘Sing me Back Home’, and I believe it was shortened, too. He probably did it because of time constraints of a TV show, Austin City Limits in this case. A lot country stuff from the early to mid-60s were short songs, under three or so minutes. They seemed to be more about the lyrics than showing off with a solo. That’s not to say solos didn’t happen, but they weren’t as long as they are today.
I’m not sure if it’s still on RUclips, but there was a documentary about Merle released in 2009 or so. It was called ‘Learning to Live With Myself’ and shown on PBS, I think.
I wish he got more reactions. He wasn’t as big a name as Willie or Waylon, but he was just as big a part of the scene and was given many, many awards back in the day.

Tasha, Did you know that Merle did NOT want to sing songs about his time in prison. Johnny Cash convinced him to tell the stories. Johnny told him that most singers only sing about it, but they haven't lived through it. He HAS lived through it. So he did, and it made him a legend.
Btw, there is more another verse to this song.

Love to see you getting to know Merle and his music. Looking forward to when you get around to the song by Pure Prairie League called I'll Fix Your Flat Tire, Merle, it's a fun tribute song to Merle and makes a reference to Merle's song called Okie From Muscogee.

Completely agree, the entire concert was amazing, i believe the whole thing is on RUclips somewhere. i'm not 100% but i think it was Austin City Limits.

He actually did time in Prison. All of the old Country songs, and some new tell a story. Like most young men born into poverty want things. He went about it the wrong way. The lady in the Video name is Bonnie, his ex wife. Bonnie and Merle remained friends, and she continued performing with him as a backup vocalist.
My favorite song by Merle is “Working Man Blues”

Merle was amazing... but how about Bonnie Owens' backing vocals and harmonies... there's something about her part on the chorus to this song that just makes me melt.

I really appreciate you doing this reaction video and obviously not the sound like a know-it-all by any stretch. It's more constructive, especially if you're doing a documentary. Johnny Cash's Folsom Prison album was in the late 60s, and Merle was out of prison by I believe 1962. Merle was in San Quentin prison call my buddy did see Johnny Cash there in the very early 60s

Am I losing my mind or did you previously post this reaction? There was a tribute program that featured many country artist doing Merle’s songs. It was in a relaxed setting with a great backing band. Merle’s three sons also perform on that show. Two of them do this particular song together it is very good. Can be found on Country Roads YT channel.
