I too spotted this, and decided to undertake a Doctorate study to analyse the theory as to why he choose to play out of key. After 23 years of deliberation and in depth analysis (including field research), have concluded, that Joe in actual fact played this deliberately - he actually went as far as to invent a new scale (mode) of a mode, in real-time. No one has successfully ever reverse engineered the key, and to this day, I am still trying to crack the secret code. Hail the master Joe
