Another reason not to allow your cat lay down on top of your hamster cage is cats have scents gland as any other mammal (like hamsters) and leave their predador scent wherever they go and hamsters are prey animals and have a REAL GOOD olfactory sense, so it's really stressful for them being constantly exposed to a predator scent which means constant threat to life for them :(

Unfortunetly, one of my hamsters escaped and my cat got to her before I did because she got out under my door. The guilt still eats me alive even though there was nothing I could do but i totally agree with this. Aslong as you have a secure enclosure and keep the cats out of the room with the rodents, you can usually house both animals. Thank you for this video!

I'm sorry that happened to you, it happened to me as well. I had moved my hamster to an ikea detolf and I made the lid and the holes in it were just a bit too big and she got out that night, my door gap is pretty big so I guess she went under it and through the baby gate I had on the outside and I have four cats and when I woke up I found her. I was really upset because she was my very first hamster and I only had her for about 4 months which made me even more guilty about it, she was very sweet and would climb into my hands. After a week or two I gave the detolf to one of my other hamsters and I stayed up all night to make sure that she wouldn't get out. I now have plastic from their bin cage lids hot glued to the bottom of my door just incase. I still do have a lot of guilt about it, but it definitely wasn't your fault and a lot of people have made this mistake and it can sadly can still happen even with all of the precautions.

@@gay5626 that sounds terrible :( i couldn't imagine just finding her there dead. I got to hold her before she passed away thankfully. I was there for her last breath. She actually died from a heart attack, she had no wounds or anything and had all the signs of a heart attack. I guess the only thing I can learn is to be more careful and aware. From this experience i have been checking on my current hamsters multiple times a day to make sure there are no gaps or odd things happening in their enclosure.

I have had a dog and Guinea pigs at the same time. I have done some of these things myself. Even though I trusted my dog fully I would never have let him be alone with my Guinea pigs because it’s always a chance of that he would do something unpredictable even thought I could read his body language really well. We had him for nearly 10 years, since he was around 2 months old. I would always have the door closed into the room where my Guinea pigs stayed in and sometimes I would let my dog come into they’r room and sniff around for couple of minutes. I would always read my pets body languages and make sure everyone was calm. My Guinea pigs would always let me know when they had enough and I would always remove my dog from that room

Hi, Victoria! Thanks so much for your videos! Since I work in a huge pet store, I started researching as much as I can about small animals and came across your channel. Since then I've learned so much and feel confident in recommending my clients the right stuff for their hammies - I have even managed to send a few hammies to their new homes with huge glass tanks, deep bedding, an appropriate wheel etc. 😊
I also had never owned a hamster in my life AND I have 6 cats, but I recently ran into an opportunity to rescue a Syrian female from terrible conditions (she lived in a 20x20cm cage!!!)... Long story short, she also lives in a big glass tank with all the bells and whistles, is super happy and I'm suddenly in love with hamsters. Thanks to you! ❤️

This is all great advice. I have two very high prey drive cats, they are fine with the rabbits (it helps that they were raised around them and that training started their first day home, and also the rabbits are bigger). At some point I want to get some small native mice in a tank so I'm definitely looking into the best ways I can make a secure lid.

  • @Alteori
    @Alteori 2 года назад +5

I don't own cats at the moment anymore. We do have three dogs. My 9-year-old Dutch Bunny recently passed and unfortunately, when I got my Shiba Inu, my bunny could not roam freely in the house unless the Shiba Inu was locked away or if we were in a different room.
The Shiba is a freaking killer!!! Her breed function really kicked into gear when we had a mouse infestation from the pizzeria next door.
You could see it in her eyes and her body language, and her little tail that barely ever wags unless she's doing the deed, that she was born for this.
She hunts quickly and effectively and ends her prey with lightning quickness.
After the mouse incident and all the mice were clear out of our house, my Shiba seemed to not be as interested in killing the rabbit. I was not stupid enough to leave them alone with each other or put the rabbit near her.
I'm now getting a dwarf hamster. I owned a dwarf hamster many many years ago and she was the best thing in my life besides my cat.
I tend to carry around my small animals with me. Once my Shiba Inu knows of its existence, I know she will be hyper focus on wanting to get at my hamster.
I think it will just take time for her to understand that this specific critter, is mine and not hers.
Keeping the cage high up has also helped and not leaving them unsupervised in the same room, Shiba inus can climb as can cats.
Making sure the hamsters are safe no matter what can result in a peaceful household ( a place that is easily accessible by you but not your other animals who's best)
OH I also agree that it's not a good idea to leave cats alone with hamsters.
I used to own gerbils and when I got my first breeding pair, I had two male orange tabby brothers and they would stay in the lower level of the house.
The gerbils were in a reptile tank with a mesh at the top and you literally have to close the tank by placing the mesh cover directly over the lip of the tank.
When I came home from school the top of the reptile tank had been lifted and pushed to the side but was still on top of the tank, the gerbils were gone.
My two cats were just sitting and looking at me and licking their lips as if they'd just had a meal. Jesse and Justin both had a high prey drive.
I know in my heart they ate those gerbils and they waited till I left and found a way easily in. Cats are extremely resourceful when they want to get something.
When I was even younger and still living in my country, I had two baby red neck painted turtles. We had a little pillar wall separating our staircase and the rest of the rooms and the turtle oasis sat on top of that.
I was very little at the time and it never computed that with me owning 15 cats and having to baby moving animals in a place that my cats could. Hypothetically reach was a bad idea.
I was like 7. I came home and my little turtles were usually happy to see me because they know I would pick them up and play with them or set them out.
When I went to the top of the stairs... Their little enclosure was empty
Again, one of my older female cats was nearby. The area just staring at me and cleaning her face to seemingly get rid of the evidence
I can never be mad at my cats because the truth is it falls on me to be completely responsible and make sure smaller animals are completely cut off from predator animals.

I totally agree with you. They can coexist but you always need to be aware. I have 1 cat and 2 piggies. I have no C&C cage due to that but a secure wooden enclosure with stern wire on the open spaces. With a piece of glass on it so that the cat can sleep on his blanket there. And when they are roaming free the cat mostly is outside or I keep an eye out by holding the cat.
But keeping them together in the home instead of different rooms is possible too. Just make the enclosure rodent escape proof and cat get in proof.
    Great video as always.

As an owner of 3 cats and 1 hamster I make sure I keep them separate. My hamster's cage is in my room so I close the door just in case my cats decide to go into my room and hurt him. Also my door barely has a gap underneath so if my hamster escapes my cage then he won't be able to fit underneath. Although my cats have been in my room before however that was a time when my hamster was in another room 🙂 I try to keep all of my pets extra safe so they don't hurt themselves. when i was around 16, we had a dog and my dad had an hamster for a long while, the hammy was pretty tamed and i'd handle her daily. One day i did introduce her to our dog, i trusted the dog as she was very obedient and very sweet of a dog, the dog was comfortable with the hamster and no indication of any strange behavior happened, only some initial sniffing. At some point the dog was laying on it's side on the floor and i even let the hamster sit on the dogs back/rear and still have that photo i took of that lol, again, i was 16 and clearly didn't grasp the gravity of the situation at that age, but im glad it all went well. Today knowing what i know, i would never do that again, you never know what's going on on their heads even if you're good at reading body language.

I want to tell a cautionary tale as someone who owns both Cats and Hamsters that goes to show even with your best efforts, sometimes accidents will happen and you should ALWAYS be careful owning both..
I keep my Hamsters in my Bedroom so I can best keep an eye on them. The room has a door, which shuts and locks. I always close this door at night while I sleep and anytime I am out of the room or house, so my cats don't have access.
One night, I closed the door, and went to bed. I woke up to the horrible sound of one of my Hamsters screaming, and immediately flung myself out of bed - I actually moved so quickly that I later realized I sprained my wrist in the process.. I found one of my cats ontop of one of my Hamsters enclosures. He had managed to put enough weight on the lid by sitting on it that a small gap appeared in the wire mesh - And he had stuck his paw through that tiny gap. My Hamster, seemingly is a bit of an idiot, because he must have gone up to my cat out of curiousity - He got clawed, and screamed. Luckily I reacted quickly, and removed my cat from the room, before freaking out when I couldn't find my Hamster.. I was so panicked, that I even went back and checked my cat's mouth purely out of fear.
My Hamster was completely fine in the end - I found him in one of his burrows. He had a puncture wound on his back, but despite that, was acting like nothing had happened 30 minutes later. Obviously, I was not ok. This all happened at 4am, so I called an Emergency Vets and took him there. They thought he may need stitches, but wanted to try him on medication and see how it went first. Amazingly, his wound fully recovered in 6 days thanks to the medication. Not even a week!
I was incredibly lucky. To this day, I still don't know how the door opened - I took the right precautions, and still my Hamster almost paid the price. My best guess is, as the window was open, the wind might have been strong enough to open the door. Now, I lock the door, just to be safe. I've also double layered and strengthened the enclosure lids. I still have nightmares of his scream, and of seeing him in the mouth of a predator, to this day.
Please always be careful owning Cats, or even Dogs, and Hamsters - It's not worth the risk if something goes wrong. You can own both - But always take precautions, even if your cat is seemingly docile.

And she has a prey drive, she regularly brings in mice 😂 And yes, I'm 100% sure the hamster Doesn't care. He will sit right underneath the cat and clean himself, eat and drink. Our hamster also Doesn't escape, ever. My boyfriend have forgotten to close the lid several times, before we got the cat, and the hamster never even seemed interested to try and get out.

We had the hamster first so we'd keep their interactions supervised for awhile - then it got to the point, when we were confident the cat wouldn't try to eat him, he'd be allowed to sit in the same room as the closed cage.
They've gotten use to each other now that they actually rely on each others company and its quite sweet.
We never let the cat near if the cage is open, though.

I always have people saying "are you going to feed your hamster to your snake?" and it sucks to hear because its asking if I'd want to kill something that I really care about but joking about it. I have nightmares all the time that they escape and eat my hamster. I always prioritize their safety and really wish that people understood that I can equally love both of my pets without wanting to KILL one to feed another.

I recently redesigned my rescue hybrid dwarf hamster, Matilda's cage and added a sand bath and a rock to help keep her nails under control. Apparently she hadn't seen a rock before and immediately tried nibbling on it thinking it was some weird millet spray or mealworm i guess, she stopped after two nibbles and walked away to run on her wheel but I thought it was an odd behavior, she doesn't go after her whimzees or chew toys, and she hasn't done it since which makes me think it isn't a stress behavior, just her thinking something is edible that wasn't ^^''

I have 2 rats and a dog, the dog isn't too bothered by the rats if anything she's more interested in them, I had 1 of the rats out of the cage making sure she was okay because I seen a red mark on her eye and the dog came up beside me and laid on her back, which is either a sign she's showing the rat that she's not a threat or she was jealous of it because I was paying more attention to it lol

i swear to god ive seen so many people talk about how a cat's saliva is almost poisonous to hamsters and one of the most liked hamster videos on tiktok has a cat licking a hamster in it 💀

    • @VictoriaRaechel
      @VictoriaRaechel  2 года назад +2

It’s not poisonous 😊 but it is filled with bacteria, bacteria that will cause a quick infection to any open wound. It’s where the term cat scratch fever came from 😅

    Hey Victoria 👋
What are your thoughts on the Tiny Friends Farm Harry the hamster seed mix? It seems to be quite varied but wanted your thoughts before I bought it, also I don’t know if we only have it in the UK but would love to hear your input even from a quick google search thank you 😊

I have a question for you if you care to answer. I know you have had experience with owning hamsters and know more than I do. My hamster is turning two on July 15th and I believe that is getting pretty old for a hamster even though he looks good right now. Since I purchased him at a pet store his blood lines are suspect as probably no ethical breeder was involved. What should I expect from age two to age three and should I change his living arrangements or keep them the same. Right now I have him in a 50 gallon (about 200 liter) bin cage with a tunneling system allowing him to visit a 6 foot by three foot play area (2 meter by 1 meter) outside his main bin where he lives. The play area has many platforms and paper substrate depths along a two foot by two foot sand area containing black sand and another round sand play pen from Night Angel having white sand within the black sand area. Is this too complex as the area is completely safe with many tunnel and hiding spots throughout his bin cage and the play area. I know how he ages his energy levels will drop but I also do not want to deprive him of the chance to do what he wants as he changes his habits all the time. I am not worried about the now but what signs should I be looking for as he grows older. Maybe a video is in store as I am sure many of us Hamster owners are in the same spot. Plus should I change his diet as he gets older???

The older the hamster, the more prone they are to getting respiratory infections or kidney failure. If you see they start exercising less or breathe faster, take them to the vet to get treated. Or to be euthanized. So they don't suffer in their last days.

I even washed my hands before dealing with anything hamster related because I didn't want the smell of my dogs, in my hands, to stress them.

I'm trying to prepare equipments to adopt a hammy. I was wondering, if I want to free roam my hammy, is it okay to use children's playpen? The one they use to play with a lot of plastic balls, but without the balls. I will cover the base with blankets, of course.

This goes the same for me. I don’t own a cat but we have a family dog. When he comes over for a staycay, I will always lock my door up. Even just incase he happens to slip into my room, my parents will quickly move him out. We do not know what will happen every minute, second so safety always comes first

Our hamsters (one syrian, one Chinese dwarf) and kept in my daughter's room. No cats are allowed in there. We check and double check for kitties, just in case. I also have the cages secured to the shelves their on, as well as have the lids secured. We have lost one robo hamster due to the cats. I still feel awful about it.

Well I just had the scare of my life last night. I went downstairs to check on my hamster at like 9:30 and saw that her food from 2 days ago was still there. I hadn’t seen her in 2 days. I immediately started rummaging through her bedding and realized SHE WASN’T THERE. So I panicked and woke up my parents. We searched her cage and the whole downstairs until my mom saw the Capet by the bookshelf was torn. So then my dad says “it’s hollow under there. Go get your flashlight.” So I do and sure enough, I see her head poke out from under it. Then I lure her out with a seed and put her in her carrier. Then my Dad grabs chicken wire and starts putting it on over the gap between the two sides at the to p if her cage. The one way she could’ve gotten out without physically chewing through it. Then we put her in her cage and put the cage in her pen, so if she did escape again, we would know. 🥵🥵🥵 it was terrifying. She is ok now though, just a little freaked out

Hi thanks for this video! I don't have a separate room for my hamster. I'm worried my kitten (3 months, picking him up in a few days) will become totally fixated on my hamster as soon as he arrives. I do have a place in the entryway to my basement that is dry and normal temperature, but does not get natural light, but there is a door that I could close. Is it a bad idea to put the cage there? I could leave the light on during the day, but it's not natural light

I had a Gsd puppy when my hamster was still alive (I still have the dog :)) He ever bothered her or tried to find her, (he knew she was there but I wouldn’t let him anywhere near her) I honestly think he didn’t care! But dogs and cats are pretty different!
