I follow your channel and although I am totally not interested to purchase 95% of your tested lenses, I always take a look at the tests and look how the market is going. I also get a feeling of what is more important to you in testing a lens so I can take that in consideration when you test lenses I do like. All in all, solid and honest (not sponsored) tests, thanks for your time and sharing and I do hope you are in the opportunity to test the new 28-70 Canon F2 lens in the near future !!
Got mine used but if i had paid the full price i would also have no regrets. The A-ring is a bit to get used to but its so much fun! EVF + focus peaking makes this a joy. I think this lens is all around the process and less about the result. the joy translates to the pictures you get, not perfect maybe but worth looking at!
Sir thank you for responding to my comments so quickly. Actually your the only one who's getting back at my comments. Thats very nice of you. Today here's my question, I just want to be a portrait photographer and occasionally wanna shoot landscape. Regarding this information which camera would you suggest me to purchase? Thanks.
I think the Canon EOS R is a solid choice if you want to go Canon, as it is now a good value. On the Sony front, I would suggest an a7RIII, which is the strong value now in the Sony lineup.
Thanks for putting this together! It was helpful. There's a black friday deal on this lens for $329, but I think I'm going to pass. I didn't expect it to be great, but the bokeh is too busy. I would have given up a little sharpness, but I don't think I can deal with that bokeh.
I suspect that a degree of the corner sharpness issue is because the corners are out of focus. I don't know what the lens formula is for this thing but it is very possible that the focus plane is slightly curved and not flat. In order to truly test corner sharpness/performance you need take samples using the corner to set the focus. Focusing in the middle and then evaluating the corners for sharpness simply doesn't tell the whole story. A lot of these cheap fast primes use old Zeiss planar formulae which were notorious for this sort of thing. It is part of what gave them their charm, where you focus was sorta sharp and then softness radiates from that point. Don't get me wrong, I'm sure the corners are still rough, but probably not as unusable as it seems if you were to put your subject in the corner and focus on it there.
Hi Ryan, I shot some tests at infinity as well and got pretty similar results. I'm not saying that focusing in the corner wouldn't produce a slightly better result, but even at infinity the same trend towards corner softness persists.
@@nivin3 That's true, but I think it's worth $300 more. It's about the same size/weight, it's 2/3 stops faster, and based on other reviews it seems much better on F0.95 than Meike on F1.2. But I would like if Dustin could get his hands on Mitakon and do a proper cross comparison.
Since RF50 1.2L is very expensive, this one looks interesting. Would you recommend this one, or a Canon EF 50 1.4 with adapter? I am more interested in bokeh and sharpness, and I have no problem with Manual Focus only.
That's a good question. I wasn't blown away by this lens, so I would have a hard time strongly recommending it. My favorite inexpensive 50mm (ish) lens on EF was the Tamron 45mm F1.8 VC. It still might be a good option via adapter.
@@DustinAbbottTWI Oh. Id be very interested in knowing which one you will keep (the f2 or f2.8). My decision will be based on your recommendation (has always been spot on).
I bought a vintage FD 55mm f/1.2 (non-aspherical) and a $20 FD-RF adapter and together those cost about the same as this lens. I wonder how the two would compare! To my eye I think I like the character of the FD lens a little better, but then again I don't own the Meike so I haven't had a chance to try them both.
Hi Justin, the problem is that I always get about half a dozen different suggestions on how to pronounce everything from my audience. Most importantly to me, Meike (who supplies me the loaners for the three reviews I've done of their lenses) has never corrected my pronunciation.
Ehh, these pricier modern, all manual lenses, fast aperture or not, are a hard sell for me. I feel like most people would be better off saving a little money and adapting some vintage lenses for a fraction of the cost...
I wouldn't mind paying maybe $1K more for the same lens that was more consistent throughout the image, but I also wouldn't mind paying the price of this lens and use it within its limitations.

I'm glad you're enjoying the lens.
It’s great to have alternatives. A 1.2 lens, with its flaws, is awesome at that price
I agree.
Great picture at 16:23. The bokeh of this lens is really pleasing.
I agree...in the right situation. Not so great with bright highlights, but for ordinary things it can create some lovely images.

Thank you so much. It helped.
I liked it for what it is.... Definitely more for an artsy/portrait type lens. Kind of retro and dreamy but usually with character.
For sure.

Fair enough.
I’m bout to buy this lens. Thanks Steve Carell!

This Flare is nice❤
I would be great if you could get your hands on Mitakon 50mm F/0.95, I expect it would be much better for low-cost shallow DOF than Meike.
I don't think I've ever had a Mitakon lens cross my desk.
Mitakon is double the price of Meike

Justin, do you have a RF 24-70 IS 2.8 or RF 28-70 2.0? Just curious.
I'm testing the 24-70mm F2.8 IS at the moment.

Hopefully in early 2021 I can get to the 28-70
Never seen a 10 DM Note for 20 years - thanks! :-)
A lot of Germans enjoy seeing that note!

Hard to say. Mirrorless is such a great place for adapting vintages lenses; it really gives them a chance to live again.
This vs samyang 1.4 which one ? Thanks for review
Hmmm, it's been a while since I've reviewed the Samyang. I'm not sure I can give you a good answer.
The pulsing focus on 2:30 reminds me of my broken sigma 19mm 2.8 ..
I don't know - the Sigma 19 was really rough for video AF.
Just wanted to highlight that the name "Meike" is not really pronounced as "Mike", but rather "May-Ker". Great review btw!

Hey Dustin, would you do a video on the difference in color index between godox, westcott, and profoto flashes?
Hi there, I'm afraid not. I don't really have a supplier for Westcott and Profoto.
you have some background buzz @2:00 min mark the vid is good not sure if you know, lol nice work though !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Unfortunately mics have glitches on occasion.
@@DustinAbbottTWIdo you use that lens regularly

I think there's some truth to what you say, though functionally this lens is very nice.
Just me who is getting that horrible audio buzz?
It is there for about 45 seconds at the beginning. Microphone issue.
omG those onion rings...no thanks
Indeed,
They are definitely pretty strong for that kind of shot.

A grand might be a bit much, but I take your point.
