Testing sail configurations in strong winds, how I managed my canoe o

  • In this episode I continue my sailing adventure in Gustav Vasa country. I start the day on the small island Skinnpälsen. The wind is forecasted to be between 16 and 22 knots but it turns out to increase during the day. I have to change sail configuration several times during the day before I find one that works. At lunch time I have to cross over a larger open stretch and the waves get to high to be comfortable. Please join me on this trip and support me with a comment and like.

Enjoyed the video and will check on some of your other videos. You look to have a big sailing area there.

Thank you for commenting. Yes there are plenty of places to explore, many lakes and several archipelagos. If you have a look at the sailing playlist there are some hours of sailing with my different boats.

Interesting sailing... If I were you, I would try to find a way to get more tension in the halyards. Flat sails are easier to manage in breezy conditions, may be a small tackle ?

@@Panoramix0874 Thanks for the support! This was at the most extreme conditions I ever plan to sail in.

What a beautiful area. I would dream to sail there with my sailing canoe but so far from France. Once, maybe...

That was great sailing in your sturdy canoe. I liked the way you were observng wind and weather and island positions and you thought through all the options and needs to reduce sail and avert capsizing. I have capsized in high winds quite a lot as a youngster when racing. While cruising and camping it definitely would not be advisable and you might lose camping and other gear over the side. Downwind sailing in a blow always most difficult.

Thank you for the comment! The boat is hard to turn flip over but I have had water over the edge several times. The trick is to reef early as the power of the wind increases quadratical to the wind speed.

Name: Kanotyawl 400 by Thomasson Design, made it myself as you can see here ruclips.net/video/Y6CiK3uImNg/видео.html , length 403 cm, beam 161 cm, draft 16 cm with centerboard up and about 60 cm with it down.

At 161 cm beam it’s not really a canoe ,more a double ended boat

Yes you are right, the width of my boat is 161 cm, the beam from the blue print is 154 cm. I guess a designer can call it a canoe when it is 154 cm but not when it's 161 cm 😉. Thank you for taking the time and commenting, the feedback it's much appreciated.
