Timothée Chalamet, Joel Edgerton, and the Cast of 'The King' Talk Those Epic Battle Scenes

  • It's not an easy task to take a well-known and frequently mythologized chapter of history and offer a new spin on it, particularly when that history has been mythologized by none other than Shakespeare himself. But writer-director David Michôd and co-writer Joel Edgerton have stepped up to the task with 'The King,' a retelling of King Henry V's ascent to the English throne, with the help of a brilliant cast that includes Timothée Chalamet, Robert Pattinson, Ben Mendelsohn, Lily-Rose Depp, and Edgerton himself. Ahead of the film's theatrical release in October (it will be available to stream on Netflix on November 1), Michôd, Edgerton, Chalamet, and Depp sat down with RT editor Jacqueline Coley to talk about their new film, explaining how fight sequences tend to bring out an actor's inner child and what it takes to reinterpret history -- and Shakespeare. Plus, they give us a few Rotten movies they love, and Edgerton describes what it's like to get bad reviews as a filmmaker.

My one complaint...too short. I wish it had been spread out over two or three series. Or at least fill in the final history with words what happened in the wake of King Henry V short life. The acting was fantastic. Too bad no one mentioned Robert Pattinson. He really stepped into his role as a Frenchman. Loved his chemistry with Timothee, but then again Timothee brings out the best with whomever he is acting. Edgerton is such a talented writer. Very surprised to see that one of the producers was Brad Pitt.

So, the first group of the English “army” had armor and helmets, the French as well. But because the English knew that by the time rest of them are supposed to run from the forest and join the battle, majority of the English army will be dead, they joined without helmets and armor, that’s how they distinguished themselves ( the English ) and the French.

My wife and I both studied medieval history. The film is very accurate, historically. The battles and all of the sets are brilliant. The duel betwen Hotspur and Henry is excellent from a Western medieval martial arts perspective. It's close enough to the historical record that we didn't get excited about the plot being inaccurate.
