Bear in mind: The battleship was in harbour. Harbours tend to be quite shallow. Battleships tend to be quite deep in the draft. You probably did in fact sink the battleship - but the ground got in the way stopping it from sinking any further than the top of the armour belt - it simply wasn't deep enough for the battleship to sink fully.

Even if the battleship didn't sink fully, that many torpedo hits puts it out of service permanently - especially as each torpedo hit roughly the same area as the previous - each would do increasing damage internally. The side 'bulge protection' on battleships is good... but not that good.
@@VerilyVerbatim You could see in the video she'd sunk to the top of the main armour belt but couldn't sink any further because she was sitting on the bottom of the harbour. Lacking major port facilities there, refloating her would be a task likely to keep her out of the war for years, so the end result is the same as if she were sunk.
@@vipertwenty249 I know it's a game, but tactically, that was foolish. Putting heavy capital vessels into this location, with minimal draft clearance, that is ...well, it actually sounds like arrogance, from people in charge giving orders, just because those orders sound plausible..?
you hit the aft magazine on the Furutaka class cruiser. I aim for magazines all the time when I raid harbors for capital ships as it is typically a one torpedo kill if you bullseye it. I aim for just under the turrets. Not sure if it is the mod pack that added it but the force of the detonation may have triggered sympathetic detonations in the battleship due to how closely moored they were but I dont think the base game had that. Also with battleships you have to spread your torpedoes out more to flood more of the ship, it does not do much to slam them repeatedly into the same section over and over on damage saturated compartments.
Nice episode taff, talk about a close shave with that shore battery.. my brother in law plays this all the time and he never attempts Harbor raids, he claims it's taking your life in your hands.. I suppose that shore battery was proof, but you pulled an epic raid off so it was worth it in many respects. That first ship you sunk was one hell of an epic bonfire, a glorious sight indeed. The IJN will be humiliated by this one, raiding one of their ports so early in the war and slapping them in the face, it was like Anakin Skywalker raiding the Tuskens.. left, right and center.. the enemy was being cut down. If the enemy recovers any ships in shallow harbor water.. we just sink then again 😉. Great episode taff, on form as usual.. keep it up mate 👍
Shallow water is so dangerous, i would have fled long before you did ! :D I would have been tempted to surface and put a few deck gun shells into the carrier .. but then sanity knocked on the door.
You've got me back into playing this. Havent played in years. Patrolling the Celebes Sea, only finding passenger(probably troop) ships flanked by 2 or 3 destroyers so I'm using long range shots 2 or 3 torpedoes and scat. So I'm gone before they start searching. So far successful ;) ... he who shoots (hit or miss) and runs away lives to shoot again another day ;)
Ome of the deficencies of the IJN submarine force was that its captains were fixated on sinking the prestige warships rather merchantmen. It allowed the Allies to build up their supply base and troop numbers. Allied submarimes weren't adverse to sinking warships but priority went to the Japanese merchant marine.
Eventually. the USN did not like unrestricted submarine warfare at the start of the war and sent submarines on all sorts of missions that weren't ruining the Japanese Merchant Marine
I am totally not surprised you choose not to sink that carrier Actually I did face a carrier that was in the port in one main land Japan and it was very New one that was sunk in turkey shoot but I sunk her.
My goodness, Taff, USS Plunger seems to have commandeered all the good Mk-14s. All yours seem to be working so far. You were very lucky those shore batteries didn't manage to nail you straight away. Perhaps it was slightly dodgy to sail on the surface so close to shore like that on such a clear night. You would also have expected those shore batteries would have alerted the base that there was likely to be an enemy submarine in the area looking for juicy targets. You clearly struck the Furutaka-class heavy cruiser in the aft magazine to cause that conflagration. By sinking that, you have accounted for half of the Furutaka fleet. I can't imagine that Kongo class battleship will be setting sail for a long time. I reckon it's sitting on the bottom of the harbour floor. You hit it with five torpedoes, but they seemed to all hit in the same section of the ship. You were somewhat hampered by the heavy cruiser sitting in front which restricted the space for the dispersion of your spread. The distant fires were intriguing me too. Maybe those seagulls dropping some 100 pounder HE bombs? Who knows? Good job though, Skipper. Home for tea and medals! By the way, it baffles me why the Yanks have put the deck gun behind the conning tower on the back of the sub whereas the German u-boats had them placed in front of the conning tower.
Hi, @Taff, very good video. I've played Silent H 3 a los of years ago and was sunked by very agressive style of playing. I like very much your style of gaming. Greetings from Uruguay. PD: Are you from England?
The real IJN Kongo was hit by 2-3 submarine launched torpedoes when she sank. I think that the game was unfair in not giving you the kill with 5 hits. 😢😢😢
@JDKempton: Taff thought the torpedo he fired at the carrier may have hit a protective torpedo nets or may have pre-detonated as the Mk-14 type torpedo tended to do.

Watching the seaplane get blown off the ship was cool! I had to watch that twice.
You've got steel cahoneys. In SH1 I've never sailed into that area, as it's a death trap. Nice work!

When in doubt , win the war ! Launch aft torpedoes !
26:48 and this why you try to place your shots instead of just trying to aim at midships all the time.

Lovely fireworks, Taff. The recon float plane launched in a unique way! Must have hit the aft magazine.
29:15 I think you might hit the aviation fuel with the floatplane.
27:00 was beautiful
Something’s wrong with your torpedoes my friend they seem to be working
if the target speed is zero. aob and range wont effect the solution, so you can leave them as they are when raiding ports.
🎉 on the H/C kill. Xhame about the B/S. Prob was sitting on harbour seabed but notballiwing itbto sink completely

The first ship was evidently smuggling highly combustible Tatami mats to a fascist IKEA distributor.
HA! I just watched _Operation Pacific_
WOW Kongo BBQ!

There is no way in real life you get leisurely time to attack capital ships in a port and not get a response.
😂 watched and Liked 👍
Taff has hit Half thr Kongo fleet by now😅
Im surprised air cover was hunting you down that close to land and shortly after a harbor raid.
chosing to sink a cruiser or a battleship rather a carrier is curious
More tonnage = more beer back at port - very mercenary is our Taff.
Gotta give the navy flyboys something to do😁
Wow!!!
What the heck is the Akagi doing so far south 😂
Taff that wasn't a Kongo Class BB...it was a Fuso Class IIRC...the huge Pogoda Mast gives it away lol
Taff got it right, that was a Kongo, with 4 turrets and 2 funnels. Fuso had 6 turrets & 1 funnel.
You seem to be confused when attacking.
"Akagi class carrier"... wasnt the Akagi a unique ship? Amagi was never converted.

I reckon the Japanese lit some fires after they spotted you to warn the rest of the base that could be the reason why there were fires in the distance
