Tried to make sure this was the right video cuz I’m binge watching.. love the series.. going under the BS and sending two out the rear was a Brilliant idea fyi
Here in the Pacific against the Japanese has certainly been an entirely different war compared to the U-Boat war in the N Atlantic, eh? Don't be complaining about the lack of IJN escorts, Taff! If you are assigned a patrol area off the Japanese home islands, I reckon you would have your fill of escorts, lol! Indeed, I have read that in the real war around the home islands, IJN destroyers sometimes teamed with IJN submarines - a formidable combination. So, you might keep that possibility in mind. By the way, those "fishing" junks blew up like oil tankers - I'd say it would be a very rare cargo of fish that would produce such fireworks!!!!!
Great episode taff, your more merciful than my brother in law.. he never hesitates or even thinks of letting the enemy fishing boats go.. he always says "can't trust them" and "they've likely got half a dozen gun crews aboard", which fair enough that was quite the case at times. Nothing beats real ships with a few thousand tonnage, also a relief to see the Mk.14s functioned this time.. you'll likely be stuck trying to rely on those in regards of the enemy's armed merchants in various areas, but nothing stops you going gun action like a pirate 😁. The small fishing boat kill was a cherry on the cake in this one. Great episode, really.. was fantastic. Keep up these awesome episodes, fantastic series. Well done mate 👍
In real life, the situation was that the vast majority of even finishing vessels was under the authority and ultimate control of the IJN. And as the war progressed, virtually every ship of that type directly supported the Japanese war machine. Admiral Lockwood himself noted this during the war. There were very few 'civilian ships' as a result, although doubtlessly, many of the crews wished they were someplace else and were caught up in a war that made them sitting ducks.

There's quite a few reports of US submarines engaging in "gun battle" duels with japanese fishing boats during the war. With the japanese opening fire with small arms to prevent US submariners from manning their deck guns and US sub crews trying to suppress the japanese guns with their own small arms from the conning tower. These engagements were, in fact, so frequent subs built after 1942 had their conning tower sides built out of high tensile steel instead of mild steel so they would be able to resist the impact of rifle caliber ammunition. Honestly the only question one needs to ask to figure out the intentions of such boats is "Why would an unpowered coastal vessel have such long radio aerials on their main mast?"
@@fernandomarques5166 That's why whenever I play IL-2 1946 or anything in which regards the IJA or IJN.. I just pull the trigger.. I hesitate when it comes to hospital ships or the red cross though. I often find myself going back to older Taff playlists when I'm not feeling well. There's something overwhelmingly uplifting listening to Taff talk to bus passengers like they are real people.
To this day, I wish for nothing more than for someone to take Silent hunter 3 and remake it up to today's standards and graphics. Nothing else. No changing anything else about it, just update it like B-17 is getting.
im tired of the German U-boat Das Boot perspective id like to see other navies sub warfare its like seeing 101st Airborne at utah for the 1000th time thats why i enjoy SH4 even though its not as good overall.
The Idea is quiet frankly boring as the U-boat campaign is already way too covered by multiple games. Heck an even better idea is to cover the french (both sides), italian and british sub campaign covering the south atlantic the Med and the Indian ocean
@@gotanon9659 How many of those games are modern ones? Silent Hunter 3 is considered to be the best Sub sim there is, Ever. A simple remake of it would be a shoe in for the sub community. Something that got me thinking in both this and the previous episode. All of those non-motorised vessels, none of them were flying any identification flags, so how would one know they were hostile? Local fishers were often not flying any identification flags, especially at that point in history
no you can not, though it would be neat if a mod was made to allow that or to board unarmed small boats to search for intel or take prisoners as happened IRL later in the war
My logic for the small vessels is every time they’re hit critically there’s a massive explosion, is the just a game mechanic? Maybe, or I’d like to think they’re smuggling weapons and ammo, even if it’s just rifles and grenades
It's just a game mechanic, most of the time when a ship sinks it generates that same explosion it typically doesn't mean anything though there was a time when I was playing a modded version myself that I put a torpedo into a run of the mill looking freighter and all of the sudden it blew up like that 7-8 times in rapid succession from bow to stern and within seconds it was under the waves. So ammunition ship? Who is to say that the mod didn't make that a possible spawn?
They are not smugglers....they are Swedish lol an even worse Crime against Taff lol Taff put some crew on the deck gun in the duty roster page to speed the reload up
Those fishing boats operating 1500 miles from Japan aren't feeding the Japanese civilian population. Go get 'em. Incidentally, starving the Japanese civilian population is also part of your job.
The US was implementing unrestricted submarine warfare against Japan so aside form properly marked hospital ships, if it flew a Japanese flag then it was a valid target to be sunk without warning so no, sinking the fishing boats is not in fact a war crime.
Related question for anyone familiar. Did the Japanese military let civilian fisherman in their occupied territories like the Philippines, Malay, etc keep their vessels or were they impounded or stolen for cargo/patrol purposes?
There were certainly civilian fishing vessels allowed to continue operating by the Japanese. Firstly, so that the Japanese didn't have starving populations on their occupied islands, but also so they could take much of the food themselves. Japanese food supply to bases was always second fiddle to troop movements and ammunition supplies - particularly when for Army bases rather than IJN bases, as the Army leaders were far more brutal even to their own men...
In essence, the civilian crews were retained on "their" ships but the IJN was allowing this as these ships were getting food for, and gathering intelligence for, the Japanese military. In a way they were auxiliaries of the Imperial Japanese Navy and played a direct role in the war
At the very least, "fishing vessels" acted as IJN early warning picket vessels. The USS Hornet encountered a couple on the Doolittle Raid in early 1942.

Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year to all of you wonderful sausages!
Those junks were loaded with tons of ammo. So using the machine gun was a pretty cost effective way to deprive the enemy of ammo.
Really good play, keep this up and you might really damage the IJN's war effort

Your WWII sub stuff is top notch! Thank you
Even if the crab/fishing boats were just that, every one sunk is taking food away from the IJN/IJA.

Local fishermen generally use small rowing boats or small sail boats weighing somewhere around 10-20 tons generally much less
Thanks again
You can also ram the junks and you take no damage. The junks were loaded with important food. Japanese troops often got canned crab meat for rations.
Another great video
reminder of Guns of Navarone...
I always assume all fishing boats are doubling as spy/radio ships. Take away their fish, good sir!!!
Oh and please get that bofor asap!
I second that emotion, lol! 40mm bofor cannon are excellent!
Those "fishermen" look like they are wearing military uniforms !
Fishing boats could have radios, and provide the IJN with intelligence!
My country from the Philippines 😊
I wish there was a cat and mouse game with subs and destroyers that was multiplayer
Should have made those crab boats give you a few crates of crabs in exchange for smashing their radio and not sinking them
After setting them on fire, Taff should have a least stopped for some cooked soft-shell crab...

At the end of t he war, Japan had great difficulty supplying it's outposts, relying on small vessels - fishing boats etc.
@MrLBPug In 1942 Japan had military vessels to transport supplies - fast destroyers etc.
Go check out the crates that ships leave and see what you find

Taft, your crew is Canadian so there is no war crime.
Can you board and search those fishing boats?
When will the Centrifugal Offensive resume?
Look up unrestricted submarine warfare meaning Mr. Taff
...as well as the US announcing that it would pursue that course, early in the war
Thank you Taff, that was a good amount of progress
If its red its dead. So any non allied ships go boom
