Hi Big Bro! Thanks for coming back for the tutorial which is much appreciated! You look great with long hair btw :) Hope you've had a blessed time with family! Take care. Ciao!
This was an excellent tutorial. It was comprehensive and clear. I watched about 6 other videos about the Roto Brush 2 before this one. As a newbie I found this one to easily be the best of them all. I liked and subscribed. Thanks!
It's a tip from Adobe. In my experience not always that easy though. But if a brush stroke doesn't work the way I expect, I hit undo and adjust the size and re-brush.
Much appreciated it! The course is built from my own experience. I'm also working on level 3 /advanced which will really push the boundary in After Effects. Hoping to have it out before the end of the year.
Hey CM! Just came across your channel and this tutorial was by far the best I’ve seen on rotoscoping. I’m getting into After Effects now and plan on buying your course next week. Until then do you have any tutorials online explaining how to do the “super saiyan” effect at 2-3 seconds. Thanks so much man
Thank you amigo! Yes, the super saiyan effect is using a pack called RTFX. Here's a tutorial that gives an overview: ruclips.net/video/p-nCf0VzRbA/видео.html
What tips do you have for preparing your footage if you are planning to use the rotobrush? (any camera settings or color correction needed beforehand to make the subject stand out more?) I have some old footage from a soccer game and I wanted to use it to cut him out as he kicks the ball. It's been an absolute nightmare 😂. The edges look sloppy and just terrible. I film on a canon 700d currently so quality is not the best and I was filming from somewhat of a distance from the player.
increase shutter speed (you'll have to test it out but I would go at a minimum of 200 and go up from there). The lower the shutter the more motion blur and issues you'll have when rotoscoping.
@@cmdelavega Thanks for your respond. I have the Nvidia GTX 2060 SUPER 8GB, 32 RAM DDR3 1667 mhZ , BUT thse CPU is very old Intel I7 3820 , 3,6 Ghz and motherboard P9XT9 .Any suggestion about CPU and motherboard?
Thank you for creating such a clearly instructed, well-paced tutorial! I'm struggling with propagation (rendering?)... I'll keep searching for more tutorials on this aspect of the process, but if anyone has tips for what to do when a clip doesn't ever fully propagate so the project is at a standstill, I'm all ears! :)
this is a decent demonstration but i think it would be better if you ran through common problems that people might have with different footage. your roto job was very simple, it picked it up perfectly because the footage is well suited to roto brush. whereas in my composition, i can't even select the subject. it highlights the entire clip, and when i try to minus stuff from selection, it is postponed until 1,2 or even 3 frames later. and this is with the composition frame rate at the recommended frame rate
I work in the world of sports so I picked a typical shot I usually work with. This was probably somewhere in the middle, neither easy or extremely challenging. For difficult rotos, you need to go with another tool such as Mocha.
Thanks for the video. In the video you mentioned artefacts, what does that mean? Also, if the subject I wish to roto has some extreme motion blur what should I do to make it natural.
You're welcome! What I meant by artifacts is the encoding of the video wasn't high. As a result several pixels are smashed together and you get blocky/blurry sections instead of very clear pixels where you can distinguish the talent from the background. For extreme motion blur, try your best using Rotobrush and turn on the Use Motion Blur option in the Rotobrush Effect Properties. You can also tweak the Samples per Frame, Shutter Angle and Higher Quality.
Thanks! Yes, you can use the roto mask as mask for content aware but would need to convert to mask shape. You can do this by going to Layer -> Auto Trace. Make sure you select work area (so it can create a mask for all the frames). Once its done, simply copy/paste the mask or masks to your original footage and I believe you need to set it to Subtract to make it work with content aware
Please help me, if I want to extend the time of the movie, how do I do it? You've masked a little over three seconds and I've seen that you have to work in pieces of more or less three seconds for computer calculation problems, but how do I make a longer movie? Thanks thanks thanks!
Extend the length/duration of the clip and if needed, the duration of the composition. Go back to Rotobrush and continue to propagate the selection on the new frames you just extended.
Thank you man! After using it the last several months, its definitely way better than v1. You should also check out Runwayml, web based roto tool using machine learning. I just did a tutorial on it.
What computer do you have? It's taking me 24hs to freeze 44s of footage! Got an 2020 XPS Dell, 16gb ram. What would you recommend to improve workflow/reduce time? Thank you!
I built my desktop, here's link to the video and specs are in description. ruclips.net/video/NgEXmZobhZk/видео.html I havent done a 44sec roto. Most of my rotos are 10 sec or less. I have noticed that for long rotos it just crawls. Why don't you test by doing 5 seconds. If that's works than try 10 seconds. I don't have a solution other than to roto in sections. This actually would be a great question to ask to the Adobe Team. @adobevideomotion
@@cmdelavega That's a great tip in itself, to roto in small chunks. Thanks for the reply...! Will also write Adobe to find out if they can give us some tips.

hola profesor! le hago una consulta, descargue after effects 2020 y no viene con la version 2.0 de rotobrush. mi pregunta es la siguiente, tengo que descargar de adobe creative cloud? saludoss
Been trying so hard to rotoscope using the AE Toto brush but it’s just so challenging. Love your sports animation... any tips? Finding true HD sports video is surely hard to find. Pulling them from YT compresses the hell out of it. :(
Thanks! Roto 2 is a big improvement over the original. But there's always scenarios that it doesn't do well - when you have a lot of different pixel color or details in the background or when it's heavily compressed. The Mookie shot surprisingly worked pretty well and that I got from MLB's RUclips channel. Usually you'll find the best quality there.
Hey bro! thanks for this video - Question/Problem, I follow all of these steps, and also "Freeze" the Roto brush, when it comes time to "Render" - it renders out a very short unfinished clip of what I just done, ex - have a 10 second clip on the timeline, but when it renders, it only renders like 2 seconds, I know im missing a step, suggestions?
Hey man! Sounds strange what is going on when you Freeze. Make sure that your In/Out point for the Work Area is set to the entire 10 second clip. Perhaps you changed the in/out points.
My roto is not showing in the main comp window for some reason. I can see it in the layer, but when I switch back to comp nothing is there. How do I fix this?
Adobe say DON'T use undo, unless you selected totally the wrong area, if AE selects too much based on what you selected then use background paint to refine it rather than undo as that further "teaches" the AI.
That's strange. I recall something similar happened to me once but using beta version. What version of Ae are you using? Some simple steps. Purge all the cache. EDIT menu - Purge. Reboot your computer. Install latest version of Ae. If it persists definitely reach out to Adobe Ae Team.
if you have a 2 second clip with extremely bright lighting - ok. anything longer, expect lots of problems - freezing, etc - even on an M1. One of these problems is that it will randomly start propagating the whole clip, unable to exit that mode once it starts - then you're basically over, and will eventually get the beach ball. I was disappointed, bcz I was sure than a new M1 studio would solve these problems.
Once you have footage rotoscoped, select layer, go to Layer Menu -> Auto trace. Select work area as range and alpha as channel. Select option to apply on a solid layer. Hit ok and it will create an outline frame by frame. After it's done select the solid layer, drill down to the mask properties and expand the mask to desired width.
How long is your clip? What resolution? 4K? 2k? 1080? These factors plus your computer specs determines render time. For a 2K, 8 second clip, it takes 2-3 minutes to lock/freeze the rotobrush. Once its locked and cached, RAM previews and Renders are quick.
For rotobrush, 1 minute can take a while. Also check on what drive your clip is residing on. Sometimes, rotobrush slows down because your drive is not as fast. Try placing the video clip on your fastest drive, a SSD or m2v drive.
@@cmdelavega i have the fastest computer on earth with over rtx 3090 and ssd hard drives as well as the fastest cpu i9 and over 256 gig of ram. I have samsung super flash drives onboard the motherboard as main drive.
I suppose, the AI would be mature enough when version 5.0 is out soon. By that, we no need to struggle like this anymore. Everything would be managed by AI only. I really can't wait for that miracle to happen.
Man. They should already use some of this tiktoks algorithm in background removal. It's just funny how people that don't know how to edit could outdo an AE professional in terms of bg removal. Adobe needs to up their game in bg removal. They have to be the best at it. After all AE is industry standard in motion design
I don't get why my composition takes minutes and minutes to roto a single frame. 15 second or less clip and I'm rotoscoping a person. Literally top of the line PC specs and it is so slow.
I've noticed that the more brush strokes you add over time along with a longer clip, it really slows down to a crawl. Try reducing the number of brush strokes as a quick test. A quick solution is to roto in sections. For a 15 second clip, split among 3 sections and roto each one individually.
@@cmdelavega I ended up doing that. But quite literally splitting the clip among 3 different projects entirely. Splitting the clip into 3 sections in the same project still had the exact same slowness issues. I have a lot of gripes with Adobe software I feel like shouldn't be a thing.
