The polyphonic singing technique gives Diana the ability to create 1, and sometimes up to 2 additional tones at the same time which adds to the harmonic overtones and can sound an octave, or an octave and a half above. It’s this polyphonic singing ability that can make it sound like more than one person singing which is why sometimes people mistakenly believe Diana Ankudinova is using some form of artificial voice manipulation like Auto Tune, or she is using pitch correction software to alter or adjust her sound. Others believe another person is singing off stage in the background. Diana has been accused of lip-syncing over a previously recorded vocal track that was altered or modified. There is NO artificial manipulation of Diana's voice at all, and no one else is singing off stage, nor is she lip-syncing to a vocal track. What you are hearing is the musical score background backing track, along with a choir also on a backing tracks that’s used to fill in and round out the performance. Greetings from Scotland! Yes, give Diana a cover song and ask her to "modify!" it - this is what you get! 😊 Something completely, insanely different and beautiful! To point you in a different direction with Diana is going to take some time, because she never stops experimenting! Over the last 7 years I have heard Diana sing practically every genre in every possible style and I absolutely know that she is not finished by a long way yet! She still has to create her own genre in her own style yet!
*This cover is filling with deep meaning after realizing that Diana performed it as a requiem to the memory of the King of Rock and Roll - Elvis Presley. This is a public declaration of love and admiration for a departed idol!* 😪
The way she sings that song, very dark reminds me her very difficult and sad life she had, the atrocities she suffered as a child, abused and abandoned by her parents, then period at the orphanage...She went through a very dark life that any of us can imagine...
According to the statistics of my channel that is full of her videos one person out of a hundred does not like her voice so i guess that the rest 99% can't be wrong for recognizing her immense talent and her unrepeatable voice.
My statistics are way different lol for every artist, not just her. But I’m curious to know, is your channel only dedicated to Diana? If so, well then that is why your numbers make sense.
@@counterreaction Yes, it is the channel that has the videos from where you have done your previous Diana reactions from, it is Diana only that is why i mentioned the statistics. For example the "Derniere Danse", the first video you watched from Diana has 117200 likes and 1200 dislikes.
I saw a spectral analysis of this performance by Diana online; 3 harmonics above and 2 below the fundamental tone with an amplitude almost equal to the fundamental tone. This explains a lot, but how is this possible? The hypothesis could be that the chest and/or throat/head create the conditions for ideal resonance in some frequency range.
The judge/fellow competitor in red, Julia Parshuta, is also a nicely talented singer. I haven't heard many songs from her, but I watched a performance in which she handled Adele's "Hello" rather well. In that performance Julia even resembled Adele (hair, makeup, wardrobe) which I assume was part of that particular television program in which she participated. This video you just watched was the first week in a multi-week competition in which the participants were also judges -- so every judge who spoke after Diana's performance was also a competitor except for Yusif, the guy who stood up during Diana's performance and was the first to comment about her incredible performance and talent.
I have read that there IS a background track recorded by Diana herself for this performance, but Diana does have polyphonic capability that can be heard at times. And of course there are other background vocals in this performance.
Yes, I’m almost certain its her recorded vocal. I think its okay to speculate as it isn’t as conclusive as I would hope. The performance was amazing either way.
Diana mentioned in a Q&A two backing vocalists- a man and a woman who were probably part of the WEIT Media team- who sang during various performances for this show. I’m not sure she would have had time to record those vocals herself anyway
Your volume compared to her video is day and night, If I have my volume at a good level to listen to her sing I cannot hear a word you are saying. Your volume is way too low.@@counterreaction
I'm the one out of five. (Good point!) She is SO unique! Thanks for this reaction. 😃 I'm not an Elvis fan but she made this version her own. Well done!
@@counterreaction I went to the original vid, to watch again and see the judges comments. Thanks for the link! I like Angelina also. I'll check her cover out.
Magical...you really ought to check out her original work now that you've seen a few covers. Her last two are brilliant, one is from a major motion picture that came out this month. Go to her official RUclips channel. She also announced she has another orginal music video dropping on November 7th...she put out a short last night.
No background singer. She’s polyphonic. She can phonate 2 tones SIMULTANEOUSLY!😂 You must read her bio. Tragic & triumphant. She sustained a serious laryngeal injury in early childhood. Was nonverbal till ~5! Enjoy your Diana journey. Nice job with your reaction. & no cursing!👏🏻. 2/‘24
@@AlokitaVerma don't you have ears?! Besides, Diana herself shared about the studio production at that show, she mentioned that studio employees helped with back vocals depending on a song
💖🎼✅Hi, came for Dimash, enjoyed other stuff (Angelina Jordan is also amazing), and now delighted you're getting into Diana. [Edit. Please consider reading @hearinginja's comment replying to this comment, and perhaps my reply to them, for some corrections, most definitely their clarification that Diana did not choose the switch to a minor key, but also discussion of use of the word "polyphony" to describe her voice.] Among the many things that contribute to this performance's unique sound are these three: *Minor key* Igor Krutoy, who took her and her family under his wing when she was 15 or so, because she needed a patron due to her biological family trying to legally reclaim her as it were, has paid for her home and education in a city thousands of miles from her scary past, and thus she has been studying music theory and composition and arrangement in recent years. Fast forward 3 years and she presumably knew enough to realize that singing this song in a minor key instead of the usual major would work better for her artistic and spiritual journey of love of music and good people. Related to that journey is _why_ this song, and the key switch, helped. One reactor suggested it was related to the scene in the movie in which Elvis covered this song and made it famous. You may recall -- or rewatch on YT -- that he ostensibly sings it to his character's grandmother, though wraps it up more broadly in just loving wonderful people (including the girl he's wooing of course). Diana has said that her grandmother has steadfastly supported her in all kinds of ways, including exploring her voice and having confidence in herself, and she specifically mentioned her in the FAQ about Revelation, the first song she wrote, which, if I'm not mistaken, she had already written but not yet released when she sang this song you've just reacted to. I hypothesize she wanted to sing a song to convey to her grandmother just how much she loved her. (And if I'm right, then job well and truly done!) *Unclassifiable / Multiple voice type* She uses both her ultra rare [dramatic contralto](en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Contralto#:~:text=dramatic%20contralto%2C%20the%20deepest%2C%20darkest%2C%20and%20most%20powerful%20contralto%20voice) at the start and much higher register singing at the end. Her Wikipedia page says that as of August this year the upper end of her vocal range has reached D6 -- and she's still just 19, so who knows where she'll end up when her voice fully matures (which may be in her 30s). *Polyphonic singing* You might want to react to (or at least watch) [Anna-Maria Hefele vocalizing polyphonically](ruclips.net/video/vC9Qh709gas/видео.html) (21M views!). Anna-Maria expertly demonstrates this extraordinary technique, vocalizing simultaneously and independently in multiple tones (two in Anna-Maria's case). What Diana is doing is apparently the same class of technique, but, it seems to me, not nearly as general as Anna-Maria demonstrates in terms of independence of over- and under- tones. Diana instead audibly keeps her multiple tones (two? more?) locked together in tight harmonics. Otoh, Diana sings lyrics rather than merely vocalizing, and blends in her other unusual/unique vocal skills. (While Anna Maria is clearly a skilled singer, she is not Diana.) (I speculate that Diana may have come to sing this way without being trained or consciously choosing to do it, but instead arriving at it due to her physiological adaptation to extreme abuse by her biological mother when she was a baby. It would not surprise me if she was strangled at least once when her larynx was especially immature. I also speculate that Diana sometimes combines more than two tones; if so, then it seems plausible to me she doesn't even know how to artistically wield them at the same time unless they're kept in lock step.) Note that this technique is normally voluntary, and that Diana doesn't always use it. Given that -- as Anna-Maria demonstrates -- it can go extraordinary places that Diana has, at least to date, not taken it, it seems plausible to me Diana may experiment with it further in years to come. That said, she is presumably wary of ensuring she doesn't get pigeonholed, just like Dimash is sometimes frustrated that people go on about his range. To the media, they're headline summaries of what makes them special. But to the artists, such things are merely tools that can come in handy to make something expressive in the right way.
I hate to be that person but your comment has some misinformation: - Igor Krutoy is not exactly a “mentor” to Diana in the way you put it. He doesn’t work with her in any professional capacity- yes, he gave her the apartment in Moscow to further her career but besides that he has more or less let Diana do her thing on her own (which seems to be the way she likes it, as she has not tied herself to anyone whether through unspoken agreement or through written contract). Their relationship is friendly but not super close - Diana had nothing to do the with the song’s arrangement in minor key. The show’s team decided to use a slightly modified version of one that had been created by the American producer Tommee Profitt, called “Can’t Help Falling in Love- Dark Version”, which you can quickly find on RUclips. In fact, Diana has said before that for her, the hardest part of creating new songs is coming up with an arrangement. So to my knowledge, all her arrangements (including both covers and original songs) are done by other people - If I’m being honest, I genuinely don’t think she is polyphonic, at least not in the way everyone says she is. I have no idea who started saying that, but all I’ve seen for ages is tons of fans running around with that claim without being able to explain it or give a source. I’m 99% sure Diana has never directly spoken about or claimed to have this ability. What she has seems NOT to be producing multiple notes at once (as Anna-Maria demonstrates clearly), but rather particularly strong naturally-occurring harmonics (as a result of physiology) and a deep understanding of how to create resonance. It would be great if Diana could explain it herself, since I would be shocked if she didn’t know that the majority of her fans say she is polyphonic. After all, she has basically said before that people should ask her first about her voice instead of trusting random “professionals” on the internet. Sorry for writing so much, and I know this comment probably seems somewhat passive-aggressive, but I just always have a lot to say when it comes to Diana 👍
@@hearingninja I welcome any and all corrections, so thanks no matter what. 👍 And now, having read your comment, I learned much, so thank you! 🙂 > Igor Krutoy is not exactly a “mentor” to Diana Yes, I didn't mean to suggest otherwise, but can see how some could interpret what I wrote that way. I'll think how to phrase it less ambiguously in future. Thanks. FWIW, what I meant by "took her and her family under his wing when she was 15 or so" follows. My understanding was, and remains after reading your comment, that when she had stresses in her life that got so bad they manifested physically, and she asked to quit the singing competition, and more generally singing professionally, Igor, having understood this was a pivotal moment in her life, and that he could so easily contribute substantially to removing one of the major stressors for both her and her family, and encourage her to continue to pursue her passion, paid for a home and her musical education. The financial cost would have been insignificant to him, and I imagine he felt that if anyone deserved a little support, she was the living definition of it. So he stepped in, helped for a while (perhaps just a few weeks), and then, I presumed, stepped away, letting her and her family get on with their life, as a genuinely good patron would. > Their relationship is friendly but not super close OK, that's what I thought. Indeed, given recent events, and the entirely reasonable and gracious views of things each has, but which are arguably misaligned, at least superficially, I imagine their respective arcs of life will be, at least for the foreseeable future, and sadly perhaps forever, moving further apart. My guess would be that Igor will feel sad about that, and Diana perhaps too, or perhaps troubled, but such is life and each must of course journey on toward their respective destinies. > Diana had nothing to do the with the song’s arrangement in minor key. Ah, OK. I had read others say she did. I allowed that they may be wrong (which was half the reason for my qualification "presumably"). But it's very useful to hear that correction, thank you, and won't repeat that misinformation. I also wonder if you know whether she's now more confident with arrangement, and is at least collaborating on arrangements, or whether she is still pretty much relying fully on others. I ask that partly because Revelation was largely her own creation, from musical composition to her clothing and make up in the mood video (right?), and I had been thinking that likely extended to several unusual arrangement elements in it. (From little details like the sound that seems exactly like the one made when judges press their button in the singing competitions she's been in to big ones like the whispering voices.) > If I’m being honest, I genuinely don’t think she is polyphonic, at least not in the way everyone says she is. Well yes, that's where it gets a bit complicated, hence all my qualified and speculative verbiage about what she's doing and how very distinct it is from what Anna-Maria Hefele demonstrates. > I have no idea who started saying that, but all I’ve seen for ages is tons of fans running around with that claim without being able to explain it or give a source. Well I'm basing it on the fact her vocals are audibly "polyphonic", per my understanding of "polyphonic", as further discussed below, even if it's not under her control, and is actually occurring for very different reasons than is usually the case. (Hence my speculation that "Diana may have come to sing this way ... due to her *physiological* adaptation ...".) > I’m 99% sure Diana has never directly spoken about or claimed to have this ability. Right. I've never read or heard it, which is itself striking. That's part of what led to my qualifications and speculations (search for "speculate" in my comment). > What she has seems NOT to be producing multiple notes at once (as Anna-Maria demonstrates clearly), but rather particularly strong naturally-occurring *harmonics* (as a result of *physiology* ) (Quoted with my additional emphasis.) I think I have essentially the same view as you (eg "multiple tones (two? more?) locked together in tight harmonics"), but hadn't arrived at the same sense that the definition of "polyphony" didn't cover her case. I'm always open to reconsidering all things and will be interested to hear your response to the following. I know the info on Wikipedia is ultimately no more trustworthy than any other resource that's open to corruption, but with that strong caveat, I'd like to quote the Wikipedia page on polyphony: > The term polyphony is also sometimes used more broadly, to describe any musical texture that is not monophonic. Such a perspective considers homophony as a sub-type of polyphony. And the Wikipedia page on monophony: > monophony is the simplest of musical textures, consisting of a melody (or "tune"), typically sung by a single singer or played by a single instrument player (e.g., a flute player) *without accompanying harmony* or chords. I took "harmonics" to be closely related to "harmony" in this context, though I get that's almost wrong before I start. So maybe that's one place I've derailed? > and a deep understanding of how to create resonance. Yes. Isn't it breathtaking? I'd been taken to another planet before, but when I heard the latter part of Can't Help Falling In Love my skin crawled, in a very good way, as she took me to another lifetime, another universe. I have goosebumps covering my legs as I type this, presumably because it fundamentally rewired my amygdala! > It would be great if Diana could explain it herself, since I would be shocked if she didn’t know that the majority of her fans say she is polyphonic. After all, she has basically said before that people should ask her first about her voice instead of trusting random “professionals” on the internet. Right. > Sorry for writing so much, and I know this comment probably seems somewhat passive-aggressive, but I just always have a lot to say when it comes to Diana I deeply appreciated it. Apologies are the opposite of what's appropriate in my world for such helpful corrections. Thank you! 🎼👍💖

*This cover is filling with deep meaning after realizing that Diana performed it as a requiem to the memory of the King of Rock and Roll - Elvis Presley. This is a public declaration of love and admiration for a departed idol!* 😪
Thats a very sweet narrative 😅
Yes, that's right, this girl is unique.
Indeed 🙌
Whats crazy is that it still is just a hypothesis lol
Same here. Diana is something else.
Angelina is a wonder, give her all oohhs and wows, money, fame and medals .. but next please, let's move on.
Thank you for the insight ❤️🙏
Это не бек вокал,это у Дианы полифоничьный голос!😂😂😂❤❤❤❤
Way! she is polyphonic, very rare.
👍👏✌️
I have read that there IS a background track recorded by Diana herself for this performance, but Diana does have polyphonic capability that can be heard at times. And of course there are other background vocals in this performance.
Yes, I’m almost certain its her recorded vocal. I think its okay to speculate as it isn’t as conclusive as I would hope. The performance was amazing either way.
Diana mentioned in a Q&A two backing vocalists- a man and a woman who were probably part of the WEIT Media team- who sang during various performances for this show. I’m not sure she would have had time to record those vocals herself anyway
Диана пее абсолютно сама. Никакви допълнителни записи!!! Нарича се полифонично пеене! И не казвайте, че не съществува! Тя е единствена, уникална, неповторима! Една на осем милиарда! Малка се образоване преди да коментирате!😅
music brings everyone together
🥺💓
Awww dont be sad lol
Para nada es autotune,es así de impresionante su voz, ella es polifonica puede hacer varias notas con su increíble voz al mismo tiempo, ella es la tan llamada REINA DE LA PIEL DE GALLINA solo mírala es mágica tan magnífica como Dimash
After listening to this, I must say, I still have no idea what you said, her voice was loud and clear..
I apologize, I dont know what you’re referring to. But thanks for watching 🙏
Well done!
Love the honesty, not a huge elvis fan myself but I really enjoyed this one. I enjoyed angelina jordans version as well, its on the channel
What is the name of it 🙏❤️ I would love to check it out.
@@counterreaction The last two are called "Baikal" and "In my huge city", the new one that she will release on November 7th has an unknown title.
You need to watch her singing Rechenka ❤
💫💫💫
No background singer. She’s polyphonic. She can phonate 2 tones SIMULTANEOUSLY!😂 You must read her bio. Tragic & triumphant. She sustained a serious laryngeal injury in early childhood. Was nonverbal till ~5! Enjoy your Diana journey. Nice job with your reaction. & no cursing!👏🏻. 2/‘24
yes there are background vocals here
How are u saying this so confidently??
@@AlokitaVerma don't you have ears?! Besides, Diana herself shared about the studio production at that show, she mentioned that studio employees helped with back vocals depending on a song
💖🎼✅Hi, came for Dimash, enjoyed other stuff (Angelina Jordan is also amazing), and now delighted you're getting into Diana.
[Edit. Please consider reading @hearinginja's comment replying to this comment, and perhaps my reply to them, for some corrections, most definitely their clarification that Diana did not choose the switch to a minor key, but also discussion of use of the word "polyphony" to describe her voice.]
Among the many things that contribute to this performance's unique sound are these three:
*Minor key* Igor Krutoy, who took her and her family under his wing when she was 15 or so, because she needed a patron due to her biological family trying to legally reclaim her as it were, has paid for her home and education in a city thousands of miles from her scary past, and thus she has been studying music theory and composition and arrangement in recent years.
(And if I'm right, then job well and truly done!)
*Unclassifiable / Multiple voice type* She uses both her ultra rare [dramatic contralto](en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Contralto#:~:text=dramatic%20contralto%2C%20the%20deepest%2C%20darkest%2C%20and%20most%20powerful%20contralto%20voice) at the start and much higher register singing at the end.
(While Anna Maria is clearly a skilled singer, she is not Diana.)
(I speculate that Diana may have come to sing this way without being trained or consciously choosing to do it, but instead arriving at it due to her physiological adaptation to extreme abuse by her biological mother when she was a baby. It would not surprise me if she was strangled at least once when her larynx was especially immature. I also speculate that Diana sometimes combines more than two tones; if so, then it seems plausible to me she doesn't even know how to artistically wield them at the same time unless they're kept in lock step.)
Note that this technique is normally voluntary, and that Diana doesn't always use it.
I hate to be that person but your comment has some misinformation:
- Igor Krutoy is not exactly a “mentor” to Diana in the way you put it. He doesn’t work with her in any professional capacity- yes, he gave her the apartment in Moscow to further her career but besides that he has more or less let Diana do her thing on her own (which seems to be the way she likes it, as she has not tied herself to anyone whether through unspoken agreement or through written contract). Their relationship is friendly but not super close
- Diana had nothing to do the with the song’s arrangement in minor key. So to my knowledge, all her arrangements (including both covers and original songs) are done by other people
- If I’m being honest, I genuinely don’t think she is polyphonic, at least not in the way everyone says she is.
> Igor Krutoy is not exactly a “mentor” to Diana
Yes, I didn't mean to suggest otherwise, but can see how some could interpret what I wrote that way.
> Their relationship is friendly but not super close
OK, that's what I thought.
(From little details like the sound that seems exactly like the one made when judges press their button in the singing competitions she's been in to big ones like the whispering voices.)
> If I’m being honest, I genuinely don’t think she is polyphonic, at least not in the way everyone says she is.
(Hence my speculation that "Diana may have come to sing this way ... due to her *physiological* adaptation ...".)
> I’m 99% sure Diana has never directly spoken about or claimed to have this ability.
Right. I've never read or heard it, which is itself striking. That's part of what led to my qualifications and speculations (search for "speculate" in my comment).
> What she has seems NOT to be producing multiple notes at once (as Anna-Maria demonstrates clearly), but rather particularly strong naturally-occurring *harmonics* (as a result of *physiology* )
(Quoted with my additional emphasis.)
I think I have essentially the same view as you (eg "multiple tones (two? more?) locked together in tight harmonics"), but hadn't arrived at the same sense that the definition of "polyphony" didn't cover her case. I'm always open to reconsidering all things and will be interested to hear your response to the following.
I know the info on Wikipedia is ultimately no more trustworthy than any other resource that's open to corruption, but with that strong caveat, I'd like to quote the Wikipedia page on polyphony:
> The term polyphony is also sometimes used more broadly, to describe any musical texture that is not monophonic. Such a perspective considers homophony as a sub-type of polyphony.
And the Wikipedia page on monophony:
> monophony is the simplest of musical textures, consisting of a melody (or "tune"), typically sung by a single singer or played by a single instrument player (e.g., a flute player) *without accompanying harmony* or chords.
Right.
