Maybe they would rather listen to Eminem, who, to my way of thinking, Kurt Elling is 100 times a better singer than.

Kurt can do Mingus! Beautiful. Kevin Mahogany can do Mingus also. It takes great talent to tackle the genius of CHARLES MINGUS!

Boy I don't know, the original Mingus chords are so beautiful and really capture the essence of Duke Ellington. I'm just not a big fan of this reharmonization. Not knocking the performance at all.

Reharmonizing Mingus (or Ellington and Monk) with the latest 2023 'hip' reharmonisations (that will sound dated by 2033...) is not a direction I would take either. But fortunately the Metropole Orch exists as the opportunity to do such ambitious projects just doesn't exist elsewhere…

Brilliant stuff. Who wrote the alternative lyrics? They're good, but I still prefer the original ones ("I was young, and carefree ...") . Mind you, these new lyrics really suit Kurt's persona.

Did he change the lyrics??? I prefer Mingus original lyrics.

  • @ficheye00

I prefer the original to this one. Sometimes making an already harmonically complex song even MORE complicated doesn't really bring life to the lyrics, and the lyrics are what a SONG is all about. Otherwise, it's an 'instrumental'. I love Kurt Elling; I just prefer the Jackie Paris/Charles Mingus version.

Transcribe them - it can't be that difficult: not like transcribing this arrangement. You'll live in them better (if you plan on singing them) if you do it yourself .

Bonita, mas muito longe do original com a interpretação de Jackie Paris, como também a magnífica versão instrumental.

He seems afraid of the song, both in how he introduces it and how he changes the melody and lyrics. (So many chromatic missteps.) Then marches like a soldier through the beautiful phrases that should soar up to the high notes. Intonation is bad when he comes back in. The new lyrics amount to a lecture to the listener, where Mingus's were a story of a young musician finding his voice, and talking about how the Duke's music (his 'sound of love') blew him away.

don't like this singer's interpretation. The arrangement is interesting though. Still can't really beat Mingus himself of course. (I didn't care for Mingus's original lyrics, but these lyrics didn't bother me as much although it's not like a really pay much attention to the lyrics anyway....)

arrangiamento veramente orrendo che snatura completamente lo stile compositivo di Mingus e non aiuta minimamente il canto di Elling.
