I think you should not do if you are not comfortable on the company. If they are laid off you they will do it again when they find a chance. When you join again you will train or transform your old work for them without you. They reached to you because new employee could not do your work better than you. They should improve your conditions before deciding to laid off.
I think I would have told your old company yes, with the farthest date in the future you can afford. Just to at least have it in your pocket while you are on your search. You can always turn them down later saying you got a better offer.
