The British response upon hearing that Black and white soldiers can not drink together, so they said OK we will follow your stupid rules. "Black Troops Only". It just perfectly represents our humour and our friendliness.

I've read quite a lot about this. The British natives found the black US soldiers to be unfaultedly polite. They just accepted them. But to see their treatment made them see red. If you are a nice guy in Britain you will be accepted. I'm proud of my ancestors' attitudes in the UK.

Imagine America telling the British what to do was the wrong thing to do

I live not to far from Bamber and when I first heard this story I was proud of how we welcomed our fellow fighter, and turning the order to put race restrictions into black troops only is such a great example of the British humour of turning something not liked to mean the opposite of what they wanted, a woman at the time was quoted as saying "we really liked the Americans it's just a shame they brought the white ones with them" (sorry couldn't find the actual quote but it was something like this)

@@ToddReacts I'd love to know if any of the signs still exist, they should be in a war museum, or even if they sell little one's to commemorate the event

They tried to tell British people how they should behave in a British town, and even shot at them. The sheer arrogance of the Americans is sickening. Ever single MP should have been arrested and imprisoned by British troops to see if they could even survive that for 2 years - maybe even life for orders murder.

So many Black soldiers married our British women and settled happily in the UK...we have prejudice here, sadly, but it is nowhere near as pervasive as the States ...... I was taught we are all the same inside out and at the same time, Viva la difference...!! 🙃👍🇬🇧💖🇺🇸

Coming from the UK it doesn't surprise me that this happened. I come from the later Gen X generation and I would be classed as colour blind in today's society. I never looked at someone's colour. As long as they could do the job they were meant to do colour didn't matter. It still doesn't.

That makes sense why there were only black American soldiers shot or injured and none of the white American soldiers

My dad came home to Australia from WW2 after fighting along side of US troops on Bouganville, in a joint Australian-US opperation. And he told us kids how racist most of the American officers were, and he maintained this till his dying day.

I love museums as well, and that's one of the great things about living in Chicago; all of the various types of museums that one can attend here... Art Institute, Field Museum, Shedd Aquarium, Science & Industry, Broadcasting Museum, etc. to name a few.

Wrong uniform, meaning not in dress uniform but in battle dress. When a soldier was on leave he had to wear his dress uniform

It's really interesting right? Since I sent this to you (this is Jace using a handle that was autogenerated over 10 years ago lol) I've been reading up a bit as I love history. With they comment you had about wrong uniform and looking for an excuse, I'd say you're on the money. Some accounts say it was 'wearing the uniform wrongly' as in tie loosen/shirt undone but others suggest they were hassling him, unimpressed that a white woman had taken an interest in him and were looking for an excuse.
Apparently, whilst in general to many young women the American GIs were seen as dashing, exotic heroes to English women there was white troops who resented the supposed popularity of their black counterparts with the local women. It may have been a real preference in areas or just prejudice making some men resentful of any interest shown, you know? There are accounts or a stereotype being shared among English girls that if you wanted a GI who was more respectful, well-mannered and had good cleanliness you should approach a black GI! That book didn't give too much about where that came from, if the GIs knew or it it was a super common stereotype or not. But very interesting things to read. There was also disagreement if the man who died was shot *in* the back as in from behind or if the bullet was lodged in the back. Either way a tragedy and so terrible that so many black soldiers were imprisoned but I don't think the killer was ever punished at all.
I feel like historical incidents like this need to be taught all over, how can we improve as a people if we don't first learn the mistakes (and atrocities etc) that we made before us?

The racial restrictions were not just in pubs, it was as in the US at that time, segregation throughout the UK, how did the US think that the UK government and citizens would react to this, it was only ever going to go one way, there's an old saying "when in Rome do as the Romans do" in 43ad what was to become Britain was invaded by the Romans for 400 years before they left, we learned a lot from them, we were invaded by many others after that for a thousand years or more, and with all of this taking beatings the people learned about warfare, battle and governance
    "when in Rome"

What an audacity of these White Americans to tell the British landlords of the pubs to not serve black American troops - and good for the British landlords to refuse to obey them!

We did not have legalised racism based on colour in Britain. However we did historically have unfair laws based on religion. Both Catholics and protestants were persecuted, and in the middle-aged we had an expulsion of all the Jews. We persecuted the Scots, Welch and Irish, at various times.
