    I think you may also include the SWOT analysis on your own company. The strength and weakness of the development team can greatly determine how far and how good can the final product be.
    Many amazing indie titles come into notice because the company is utilizing their most powerful strength in developing the game. Cuphead is an example where the company has a very strong animation team capable of delivering that artistic cartoon style into platform game.

    I'm not sure I understand the market comparison section. I get that you're comparing characteristics, but, for example, how did you arrive at "3" for importance of market size in platformers? Is it a subjective assessment, or is there a way to objectively evaluate the importance/attractiveness of market size, consumer expectations, etc?

    • @AskGamedev
      @AskGamedev  6 лет назад +3

      Kyle Harmieson totally subjective and really determined by your own research/opinion of the market characteristics.
      The platformer example used was just meant to be illustrative and not our personal opinion of that space.
      These models are never perfect - the inputs can cause the results to sway wildly... but by completing the process ( ideally for more than one market) it forces you to think about what really matters, as well as how one market stacks up against another.
      The exact number score that is outputted isn’t really the important thing.

    • @KyleHarmieson
      @KyleHarmieson 6 лет назад +1

      Okay, I think I understand now. It's more of an "at a glance" thing, a way to organise your research ina readable way. Makes sense. Better (or rather, easier) than using an excel spreadsheet with raw figures that can't really be interpreted in a meaningful way. Thanks for your insights :)

      I love how the video opens with Notch accepting an award and then tells you to do the exact opposite of what Notch did, which was take an open source prototype with no genre or audience and bring it to the masses by making it more approachable.

    • @AskGamedev
      @AskGamedev  6 лет назад +1

      Warp Zone sorry if that was how it was received!
      We definitely didn’t intend to say that any certain path is ‘right’ or better than the other. The intent of the video was just to outline ways to evaluate or think about markets. We definitely agree that there are many paths to success - and the methods outlined in this video were just examples that should be customized to each developers specific situation.
      Thanks for taking the time to give us feedback - and supporting our channel.

    I’m not sure how applicable a lot of this is to many indie titles, at least not at the conceptual stage. Let’s use Cuphead as an example since you did; at the core gameplay level, Cuphead is an intentionally difficult boss-rush side scrolling shooter. I can’t think of another successful modern side-scrolling shooter (platformers sure but not shooters), and while hard games can find fans in streamers and competitive types the glut of failed super-meat-boy clones on steam prove how off-putting they can be as well. Not to mention this game looks cartoony and kid-friendly, not ‘hardcore’. Which brings me to the most important aspect of Cuphead; the beautiful, labor intensive hand-drawn graphics. There are far too few games that have even tried to go that route to tell if that’s a money maker at the outset, and there was no big indicator that 20’s-era cartoon aesthetics was the new thing (now you see others imitating it but was very original). It’s the thing that took the most time and work to do about that game but you couldn’t sell it through comparison. And it’s not just cuphead, plenty of break-out indie titles through the years (five nights at Freddie’s, Undertale, Hotline Miami) could easily be written off as oddities and Unmarketable and wouldn’t have been made through this system, where as some large failures like Yooka Laylee would fit pretty well.

      Hi Rene - thanks for your question! It all really depends on the needs of the team. There have been a lot of hit games made with 4 or less people - even solo devs. If there is a discipline needed to hit goal, and no one on the current team has that discipline, then it may be time to either change your goals, or grow your team.

    I've watched a couple of videos from this channel now and each one of them quickly went from "So you're interested in making a game?" with me answering "Yes!" to "Then start thinking about marketing and market research, sales predictions, digital game stores, demographics, trends, deadlines, publishing contracts, financing, accounting, pricing models, feasibility of long term support, competing games, community updates, networking at events...". No! Screw ALL of that! I just have a neat idea for a game I'd like to make myself in my spare time. It's a small idea that I haven't yet seen done that way anywhere else. But it's such a niche thing that I'm 100% convinced that nobody besides me would be interested in playing something like this. But I'm still doing it currently and having a blast. Still, I could use some tips for looking critically at my design, making improvements or eliminating unnecessary stuff. After all, I know what I want to play but I might not yet know how to get every piece to where it needs to be. But so far, NONE of these videos were helpful in ANY way because none of them apply to solo devs who just want to tinker with something they'd like to play themselves some day.
