  • The second episode of Couple Thinkers finds Craig and Megan asking some big, big questions - about Earth, the universe, alien life, and the future of humanity. Thankfully, world-renowned astrophysicist Neil deGrasse Tyson is on hand to shed some light on the topic and answer the question: ““When do we have to leave this planet?”

George Carlin said it best: we're not ruining the planet, only thing we're ruining (and then trying to fix) is our way of life. Our habitat. Planet is doing fine, with or without us. After all that happened and can happen again (asteroids, earthquakes, volcanoes, etc.), we still like to think that we are significant in this universe. We're nothing but pompous idiots.

Yes he was. Maybe editing related, but the man is phenomenal regardless. I think, unfortunately, he is going to be remembered as a great communicator when he is also a great thinker. And the way he speaks, the thought that goes into every word.. we need more of that. He is the more relatable version of our generation's Sagan, Hawking, Newton, etc.

I'm a big fan of NDT myself , and I'm alwys fascinated and hypnotized by his speeches . Science is very important , and so is religion . To say that religion doesn't provide anything tangible is very wrong . Any human being needs to believe in something greater , and that is a human need since the day our species born . Religion teaches us humility , generosity , patience ,etc etc , there is not a single bad thing any religion teach us , so therefore by definition it's not a bad thing . It becomes bad when people get overzealous , become fanatics , and that's no the fault of the religion , it's the fault of that particular 'fanatic' who has a brain with a predisposition to become overly attached to things . It's also not the religion fault people kill in its name , it's the people that predicate it in the wrong way and create these 'monsters' by brainwshing them . Again , the blame here falls on humans , not on the religion concept itself . The concept is a beautiful one , it's the last thing that poor people have left . You'll notice civilized/rich people consider religion redundant , but poor people will worship it , simply because that's all they've got , a hope that when they die there's a better place , and that in itself gives them hope to move on through this difficult life .

I have been typing keywords like "Craig Ferguson interviewing physicist" on RUclips for years, with little or no success, and here you are treating us with this magnificent, surreal, chef-d'oeuvre. Regardless of whether or not your sales increase as a result of this show, Gant, this whole entreprise was such a classy move on your behalf. Although I have to say, being myself a physicist and mathematician, it made me giggle when Craig inappropriately raised "relativity" and "quantum mechanics". Craig should give these disciplines a more serious go. Craig and all the others, if you read this, don't be afraid to study these disciplines. The knowledge we currently have was produced by humans and you are one of the smart ones of our species, therefore this technical knowledge is definetly not out of your reach. The key to succeed in this field is curiosity, passion, integrity and a lot of exercising. How about taking a high school Maths and Physics textbook for a start? Laughing is good fun, veganism is good ethics, but Physics will enrich your life beyond belief.

      Chuck-U Farly,
Religion is doctrine and dogma based - as opposed to science: evidence, scepticism, logic (non-fallacious). The latter are corrosive to all evident errors in religious doctrine and dogma.
Most important, religious families practice a degree of non-rationalism that permits such dogma to persist. Their children are raised with defective modes of thinking that leave them vulnerable to, not only their own religion, but all manner of fallacies.
To the extent that each religion clings to points refuted by hard science, they also are obligated to teach illogical ways of thinking or compel believers to abstain from critical thinking.

So glad this came up on my recommendeds again-- there's so much to contemplate and debate. Plus, it's simply pleasant to see interesting and intelligent people interact. I remember how wonderful it was to get to college and find everybody loved learning and thinking, and my little circle of family and friends weren't a suspicious minority to ridicule and exclude.

I just stumbled upon this video and it speaks loudly to me in so many ways. From the multiple videos I have watched ; over and over in some cases, this one is among my favourites as I think we saw a bit of a different perspective of #NeilDeGrasseTyson.
Someone else has commented that they were glad to be alive during the life of this wealth of knowledge that Neil shares with us. I couldn’t agree more !
The “ almost spiritual “ notion of the fact that We Are Stardust is a direct bullseye from the teachings that I have been fortunate to experience of the Native American elders who teach us that we are all one.
I would like to quote an entertainer from the 60’s , Harry Belefonte as he said, “ Togetherness, there is goodness in it. “
Let’s share that ideal with as many people possible and start a social revolution.
Washté ! … all my relations

As Craig questioned "Is it wise to let aliens know we exist and where we are?", this reminded me of Marshall Vian Summers's 3-book series "The Allies of Humanity" which says that extreme discretion is one of the main requirements necessary for any race to become (and remain) free and sovereign in the universe. There are many nuggets from Marshall's books that I could share here but I feel it's better to leave the experience for the interested reader to find it for themselves. To anyone interested, the Allies of Humanity books are free online.

    • @MaureenMurphy238

Yes. Yes. Yes. I've read, even studied, The Allies of Humanity Briefings. They make so much sense and are extremely informative. To me visitation by other intelligent life is merely the next step in the evolution of humanity. Aren't we even trying to explore space ourselves? Why are so many in denial that other intelligent life exists? We seem to think we are the most intelligent life form and the most evolved. That doesn't appear to be true if we are the visited rather than the visitors.
As for leaving the planet because it is being destroyed, why not focus on caring for this amazing place? Hubble has shown us that there aren't any other earth-like planets in the local universe. Yes, "turn Earth back into Earth."

I agree completely with your assesment. All we have to do is look at what happened to the native peoples of our own world when they were invaded by The Europeans. Allies of Humanity really opened my eyes. I highly recommend them to anyone who is curious about this subject.

I wondered about "out there" since I was 10 when I saw one.... a BIG one over the house! Allies of Humanity Briefings cleared it all up for me. I hope that more will become aware. Good guys-bad guys flying around? Turns out they're "needy" guys and they are not human nor concerned with human values. I love the Allies material!
