"Boba" is Mandarin for "bubble" (as a borrowed term from English), which is what the balls were originally called when developed here in Taiwan. These days it is also commonly referred to as "zhen zhu" which means "pearl". Depending on the tea stand they might use the two to differentiate ball size (Boba for large, Zhenzhu for small). The brown sugar is because after steaming the balls have honey or sugar added to created that firm chewy texture; brown sugar adds the almost caramel flavor IN the balls. New challenge for Ollie, Zhenzhu War! Suck up the tea but keep the bubbles in your mouth. The straw makes a most excellent torpedo tube. Use as you would a spitwad. The balls stick like [RETRACTED] and are a horror to try to get out of your clothes just shy of a full laundering.
Boba = 波霸,originally a phrase derived from Cantonese, basically means "big boobs". Apparently the namer wanted to say "these balls are bigger, just like boobs". You see it isn't actually a good term, and Taiwanese rarely use BOBA to refer the drinks theses days (still on some shops' menu I guess)
I think its only fair to inform all bubble tea first timers of the fact that there are solid toppings in their drink. It helps prevent accidents. But honesty I don't get the dislike for pearls. Besides some that are way too sugary or artificially chewy, pearls are gold and delicious! Also it would've been great for them to try fruit bubble teas, those are so underrated and swept under the bus by all the milk ones. Thanks so much for this episode, bubble tea (particularly the fruit ones) are a blessing of the universe.
I hope these gents get to do army stew. You guys always get real good reactions from that and its always a interesting dish. You could talk about some of the veterans you met with them see their reactions!
I don’t know if it’s considered an “old” food but we still have tapioca pudding in my state and can find it in most stores with a deli. My grandma used to make an instant version that somehow always came out hard. Most places that make it just put tapioca in instant vanilla pudding, but it’s oddly good in small quantities.
This was really enjoyable to watch! Would like to share that in Singapore we call it bubble tea as the "bubble" refers to the foam that appears after shaking the tea. And we call the tapioca jellies "pearls. Thanks for making me jolly this day :D

Not a big fan of tapioca texture. I don’t eat sticky Korean rice cake(떡) for the same reason. I wish I can tolerate the texture of slimy things in my mouth so I can enjoy what 99.9999% of other people enjoy.
It was served as part of school dinners when I was a lad but that's 48 years ago. I think tapioca has fallen out of favour since then and it wasn't very popular back in my day! It used to be called frogspawn.
As a big boba drinker this was so entertaining. My parents would prob react the same, I've tried to get em to sip but nope lol. I need light Tapioca too 😂 get tired of chewing after a bit!!
I love the design of boba tea, it's so easy to take it to go because of the top. This has made me decide to leave early for work to stop and get milk tea 😀 😍
Agreed, get plastic straws. The paper ones disintegrate as you drink, and you have to use both ends of it to get the tapioca because the wet end becomes mushed up.
I'm so glad y'all had the subtitles. Otherwise, I would not have been able to understand a word they were saying lol 🤣🤣 Why do the taxi drivers have such a strong accent? Much stronger than Ollie and Josh. I assume maybe they are from more up north? Isn't that right? The more north the more heavy the accent? Or am I making that up? Lol
Their accent is a London accent, mostly south, east or north London is where this accent originates. Ollie and Josh are a bit more well-spoken and have a generic English accent, they could be from anywhere in the South of England its hard to tell just by the accent. Strong doesn't necessarily mean "North", there are over 40 different dialects and accents in the UK. Even London has different accents depending on which part of London you're from! :)
No, you're right. The more north you go, the accents get stronger. But these guys sound like Londoners, some of them, have what we call a cockney accent. Type of London accent!

That's what I was thinking like uhm i grew up in the US everyone knows tapioca pudding
It was a thing growing up in Ireland too also seen as old fashioned and died off. My Mum loved it I couldnt stand it.
It was served as part of school dinners when I was a lad but that's 48 years ago. I think tapioca has fallen out of favour since then and it wasn't very popular back in my day! It used to be called frogspawn.
@@kysthanks8352 I live in the US too, I’ve heard of it but have never seen or eaten tapioca pudding.
@@Orangeyougladx3 same here. I’ve seen it at the grocery store but never thought to buy or try it. No one I know eats it either as far as I’m aware.
That taro drink.... Omg yum... I'm craving boba now!!
The cockney slang line is absolutely priceless. I was so brown bread after it.
I love these guys! They’re so funny and they’re humor is 🤌🏻 please keep bringing them back
I love the taxi driver’s accents! I could listen to them talk all day 😊
Finally a genuine reaction
ollie and josh laughing hysterically made me laugh also lmfao
Your taxi driver vids are my favorites!
As a big boba drinker this was so entertaining. My parents would prob react the same, I've tried to get em to sip but nope lol. I need light Tapioca too 😂 get tired of chewing after a bit!!
Still waiting for them awesome cab drivers to have their own Trip to Korea Series. 🙈🙈🙈
I love the design of boba tea, it's so easy to take it to go because of the top. This has made me decide to leave early for work to stop and get milk tea 😀 😍
The cab drivers always brighten my day. Thanks for a wonderful video as always. Gotta say Bill and Al are my favorite group though.
It's been a while since I truly laugh watch youtube video
Agreed, get plastic straws. The paper ones disintegrate as you drink, and you have to use both ends of it to get the tapioca because the wet end becomes mushed up.
Bill: "That's like ... sick?"
Me, a taro lover: 🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣
This episode is sooo funny
I don't know if its not as popular over there but in my corner of America I LOVE blended bubble tea. The texture is so perfect :D
Not Josh wheezing, "I don't know what's real anymore" 🤣
This is the best fun I have had all day Black cab drivers are well funny, Awesome, thanks

It so much more fun hanging arround people 🌻 they were all lovely humans, thank you for the video
Their accents are cockney I think. UK north have very different accents
@@emmaritson3936 also the further east or west you go the accents get stronger too
They're older, language changes and grows as the culture does, you can't seperate communication from time.
Jolly lads make me smile and a smile is priceless and they do it effortlessly
