    What a week!! Productive and challenging. Like you, all my earlier patterns are just “cut out” - a problem as my weight fluctuates and I don’t always want to keep buying more patterns - especially when I already have it. Love the blue dress and the elastic at the back is so effective. Your Burda dress is lovely too and you could get away with it as a dress. Welled up at your Rainbow Bridge frame - beloved pets are so priceless and always with us long after they have crossed the bridge. Enjoy your weekend with your granddaughter. Happy Sewing. Lynne

      Thanks so much for your comment Lynne. Why oh why were we so shortsighted as to cut out those patterns 🤣. The Burda dress I have actually made into a more decent length dress for me before and added ties on the side, I love that shape of dress!
      I really didn't understand what people meant about the rainbow bridge but it is wonderful isn't it. We still miss little Mickey and I'm sure we will for a while but it is getting easier.
      Have a great week 🧵😊

    Oh,n I have that first pattern but haven't made the short-sleeved one yet - your solution turned out so well, as did the other items that all presented challenges - all pretty fabrics, too. I was glad to see Mickey's photo behind you. I realized the other day our windows need a wash and I'm inspired to get it done! We had some good weather but the past week has been gloomy everyday and 16 out of 20 weekends so far this year we have had rain where I live - good for the flowers, but also for the weeds, too! When your older grandson outgrows the new jacket, his little brother will be able to wear it - hopefully he'll like Pokemon, too!

    • @socarole66
      @socarole66  6 месяцев назад

      Hi there and thanks for your comment. Don't worry about that pattern as I love it and have made it about 5 times it was just the short sleeve version that looked strange and also I used cotton jersey whereas I have used fabrics with more drape before. You are right about the jacket I hadn't thought about that, the little one knows Pokemon obviously because of his brother but it will only be a matter of time before he enjoys it.
      You are right about the rain but as you say the gardens are looking very lush and my husband can't keep on top of cutting the lawn 🤣. Thanks so much for reaching and hope you have a dry and sunny week ahead. 🧵😊

    I am so happy you were able to fix all you makes so you are happy with them and can wear them. They are all lovely and I really like the fabrics you chose. This week was working on a dress for my granddaughter and somehow I sewed the straps to the bottom of the little yoke instead of the top. When I held it up and looked at it I couldn't believe it. Not sure how that happened but I'll be using my trusty seam ripper tomorrow to rip it all out. Ugh. My granddaughters love Poke'mon. Good thing they don't watch your videos or they would be asking me to make them a jacket . Hopefully next week's sews go more smoothly. Thanks for sharing

    You're so resourceful Carole! The ruched t-shirt sleeve detail looks very pretty. I had to chuckle when you originally placed the tie on the sleeve and trimmed it - it looked like insect antennae 😂 😂. The dresses are so pretty and again the genius way you dealt with the neckline by inserting elastic worked like magic! How do you come up with these salvaging ideas?? The last dress is my favourite - love the fabric and the colors! Have an awesome weekend!

    I took notes on how you saved your makes! Thanks :). I had a massive fail this week, and it cannot be saved after hours and hours of work for a faced JERSEY!! top. So frustrated. It was a New Look pattern, and so badly drafted. I did the sleeves 5 times to get them to fit. IN the end I had to recut the top of the cap down a full size. Only to sew up the sides and the body was wrong, in spite of tons of measuring and comparing and working out the drape for the weight of jersey. I enjoy watching how others 'save' their item, and usually I can. I am encouraged by yours and will try to throw off the funk of this week! I am going to do the elastic on the sleeve and back of jersey dress on items this summer. Looks great!

      Oh no Nancy! Which New Look pattern was it? That is so odd for there to be such a mistake in it. That sounds like you have put in so much hard work to make it fit and look right. Not surprised you are a bit fed up!
      I liked the elastic bit too as quite often dresses just hang down my back, so easy to do as well!

    Hi Carole - I have had patterns that say coverstitch or finish your neck seams before you sew the shoulders together is great as long as you can stop the two pieces from moving. I don't know if you had that issue, but if anyone else does, the best thing to do is to tack the edge together so that when you sew, it doesn't move.

    • @socarole66
      @socarole66  6 месяцев назад

      Hi Jeanette, the shoulders didn't move but I can see how they would when you sew them. I mean it was a less fiddly way to do it which I suppose would suit a beginner. I still tack lots of things by hand 😂, I know, I am still old school! Thanks for watching 🧵😊

    Great job figuring out how to save your makes. It's so satisfying to figure out how to make things work out! I've only visited England once, and that was almost 18 years ago. My husband and I stayed with my cousins in Hythe. They took us to visit Southampton, Stonehenge, Beaulieu, Isle of Wight, a little village that was popular because of witch who lived there, and The New Forest. I LOVED The New Forest. All the ponies, horses and donkeys, I was in 7th Heaven. They also took us to a Donkey Sanctuary on the Isle of Wight. It was actually closed for the season but when the owner found out we were visiting from Canada he opened it for us to tour. Amazing! I have a thing for donkeys!

      Hi there, thanks so much for your comment. How wonderful that you have been to all those places in the UK. Most people tend to visit the big cities whereas you were shown 'real' England. How funny you should mention the witch village as a couple of weeks ago in a Friday sews at the end I showed some photos from a walk we did around Burley, I bet that was the witch place you were referring to. If you check out the end of the 19th April Friday sews you may well recognise it! It is 10 mins from where I live. Hi Carole I meant to comment before when you were talking about the cost of getting a pdf pattern printed - I use CLC Print, thinner paper option, and they are very reasonable. Also with Love Notions you can print A4 from home only the pages you need for the view you want. They tell you what pages to print in the instructions. You can also use layers on acrobat reader to only print the size or sizes you need. Apologies if I'm teaching you to suck eggs! Always enjoy your videos.

      Thank you so much for the PDF printing comment. You are not alone in recommending CLC so I will definitely give those a go next time. Someone else said about L N and only printing what you needed but I couldn't find that and then couldn't decide the view I wanted anyway so printed them all! No worries at all for letting me know those details, I need reminding of those things all the time!

      Thank you so much for your comment. I have never had an issue with that pattern before so it must be because the cotton jersey was more structured than other fabrics I have used. The top is quite boxy though with no shaping at all.
      Hope you have a good weekend too 🧵😊

    Carole! I spotted that frame instantly! I love the picture you put in there and that you got to read about the Rainbow bridge🌈, it's a comfort to a lot of us pet parents, I'm sure. Wow! You tackle every challenge and somehow get through in the end, with a beautiful garment! ❤ Despite it all, everything come out so pretty! And how lucky you get to make another jacket🤣! The Disney store will want to hire you soon, and how cool that Nanny makes these things, and he gets to design it himself basically?! The photos were so cool, you really go on an adventure when you go for a walk. Did you feed the horses? PS the window washer would have scared the heck out of me!💓💜

      Mickey looks so good in your frame, thank you again for such a kind gift. I didn't let anything defeat me this week as that is the problem with having a channel, I always feel responsible and answerable to someone 😂. I am not sure I would use the word 'lucky' making another jacket, this child is older and more demanding! Plus he wants all the colours right for each character, not just Nanny's interpretation 😉.
      We did not feed the horses no, they scare me!! Now a Window washer, he is ok, I would feed him 😂😂. Have a great weekend xxxx

    Well, that was such a week. I know how you feel. I have been sewing the same blouse all week and having mixed results. I was having such issues that I pulled out my owner's manual to make sure I was making buttonholes the recommended way. I almost put that blouse in the naughty corner to have a think about all the trouble it has given me. I think I will make my next project out of a kinder fabric than viscose, maybe some cotton. I was using a pattern which used 1/4 inch seam allowances and it's just plain old hard to control viscose with such a narrow seam allowance. I think it's about five mm. Lessons learned.

      Hi Marcia, sorry you've had a troublesome week too! Now a 1/4 inch seam allowance gets me really cross, there is no margin for error at all 😂. As you say, viscose can be a handful but I really do prefer the feel of it as opposed to cotton which is lovely to sew with. You win some you lose some eh? Thanks so much for watching and I wish you a better week next week! 🧵😊

      Yes you are right, the design is boxy and it's never worried me before being a long sleeved top. I had made it about 5 times before but I suppose the short sleeves made it look different and as you say, I had never made it in a cotton jersey before. Thanks for your comment 🧵😊

    Into my only 2nd pair of trousers. I’m not looking forward to it. 🙄

Well, we do learn something from our challenges don’t we and I certainly learnt about cotton jerseys and raglans! I always dread putting zips in then realise, if you do it steadily one step at a time the zip is done before I know it. Possible update to first shirt would be to add this simple placket. ruclips.net/video/P6HzT6FiJqg/видео.html Could be knit or woven. I'm going to use technique on ready to wear t-shirts. Will be tucking top of placket in prior to sewing to finish neck edge as I will not be adding a band or tie at top of placket

    Carole, I always have issues with raglan sleeves and in my case it’s about adjusting for the shoulder width - with set in sleeves, it’s easy to adjust to fit my narrow shoulders- but with Reagan, how do you know how much to reduce the width?? Because I love raglan sleeves, in the end I made a block and use this to check against a new pattern, guesstimate the amendments and run off a toile! It’s tedious but it works for me. Thank you for your videos, always interesting!,😊

      You are right Moira. I quite often bring in a neck line but that isn't so easy for a raglan is it. Well done to you for making a block for a well fitting one. Wow Carole! You have had a WEEK! I have those , also, I am always relieved when they are over. That was great saves on those two garments, some good, genuine outside the box thinking! It’s a shame that you couldn’t do the sleeves the way you wanted. I don’t get rid of garments that are not to my liking, I just deconstruct them and salvage the fabric for something else. That Simplicity blouse pattern is meant to have a huge pussybow in that gap, do women still wear pussybows? I don’t know. You are definitely making expert with that embroidery machine, I’m impressed. Carole, you have so many interesting sites to visit in your neighborhood , we have to go hours to visit anything very interesting. That’s a very sweet photo of Mickey, it was nice of her to send you that frame, it’s precious. My sewing buddy crossed the rainbow bridge this week, she was a special dog and we miss her terribly. Her sister dog misses her also. I took a kitten from the barn for a companion for her, just to help ease her grief. Her cat passed away earlier this year, so it was a good time to get her another one. Have a great weekend and happy sewing!

      Hi Sue! You are right about the Simplicity blouse, most of the views did have the bow but I really don't have the need for formal blouses like that anymore. They remind me of when I worked in hotels in the 80's and my uniforms then!! I don't think I have ever asked you where you live? We are lucky to have forest and beach so close to us, we just need more of the lovely weather to enjoy them in!
      I really am so sorry you lost your sewing buddy this week. I now know just how hard it is and of course your other dog will miss her, I know my daughters dog is still uneasy at our house. We still Mickey so much so I do appreciate what you are going through. Sending you an enormous hug xxxx💗

      @@socarole66 , thank you, Carole, for the kind words and the hug! I live in southwest Alabama, about 2.5 or 3 hours from the beach. I spent a good bit of my childhood in Pensacola, Florida, but moved back to Alabama in my teens. I also lived in Florida for 10 years while my husband was stationed at the Naval base in Pensacola. I also lived in ElPaso, Texas , where there was a small mountain of sorts. It’s all farmland around here, everyone either has cows, goats, or horses. We have chickens and horses, and of course cats and dogs. I inherited this farm from my mother when she passed. It’s really nothing close by for cities, about 2 hours in any direction. I enjoy your pictures because it gives me a window into another life that I wouldn’t otherwise know. Take care.

    you have had an interesting week and it just goes to show that even though we've used a pattern before a change of fabric can really change the whole look and feel of a pattern. With raglan sleeves I find you need to really pay attention to shoulder width, slope and position (forward shoulder). I think your raglan shoulders stick out because there is too much curve in the pattern for the shape of your shoulder and in a softer knit this isn't noticable.

    • @socarole66
      @socarole66  6 месяцев назад

      Thanks so much for watching and your comment. You are right, different fabric can make a massive difference to a pattern and this certainly was the case. That hasn’t stopped me wearing it 3 times already though 😆. I have never had an issue with raglan sleeves before and it’s my go to shape as I have ‘pointy’ and narrow shoulders! This pattern has been brilliant for me before but in the long sleeve, not having the weight of those really changed it. You are dead right on the knit though, my other makes were a softer knit. 🧵😊
