- Captain Dan and Elizabeth head five and a half hours up to Crystal River to try our hand at scalloping!! Follow us as we meet subscribers David and Melissa and explore Crystal River and Homosassa - along with running into a Sheriff's Deputy for Citrus County. We got some amazing tips for scalloping and had an incredible time!!

So happy you made it and got to meet y'all. It's been a tough year for scallops with all the rain. When Melissa and myself went they were deeper so you just never know. But that being said the experience is what it's about and finding them is a plus one. Look forward to us getting down to your neck of the woods and see the habitat and fish. We haven’t done scallop season for awhile. We had a sub invite us up one time to Crystal River and we did a cool video afterwards. Check it out in the feed.

Glad you got to go to a beautiful place. I wish i had known you were going there. I lived tgere for 14yrs and i could of saved you a lot of time by explaning where to go to.
But im glad you found a couple of them so now you know.
I used to swim in the area that has a lot of sea grass and swim against the current so you can look down into the grass their a lot easier to spot that way.
Only thing is you get exhausted swimming against the current so a long rope floating behind the boat is a good idea.

2017 and 2018 we limited out in just a couple hours. Last year was so bad, barely got half a bucket. Hopefully it'll be better this year. Glad yall enjoyed it. Maybe we'll see ya out there.

love the content.We went the first day of the year for the first time with 4 other boats with seasoned divers . everyone said its over fished as they come in a certain time of the year to spawn.We only found 40 or so in 3 days. The adventure is half the fun!! see you in the keys.
NXTROUND: Agreed! The journey is almost always better than the destination. We had an awesome time, but I worry that the scallops are definitely overfished. It seems a very small area is inundated with thousands of snorkels and the poor scallop doesn’t have a chance. I’m all about the sport and the water, but hate to see a species eliminated because of human overfishing - Capt Dan
Diffrent from your usual and very entertaining guys love the underwater hands on action the scallop fishing looks pretty cool and with florida probably been the best place ever for anything water related.one day mark one day oo well just have to keep watching you guys do all the great stuff.lol much appreciated again thanks

I like going to the grass beds off cedar key it's a bit north of Crystal River but a lot less crowded. 🤔👍

Nice video guys! Now that backwater is what I’m more accustomed to with the little boat I own and where I live. We might even try to make a stop at that place you’re at on our trip down to Bonita Springs next summer. 🤔
Maaaan..... so true about doing your research before going somewhere unfamiliar. Boating can be so unforgiving, especially in FL.

@@FloridaFishingCouple I'm in the St. Marks area. I go to crystal river every chance I get. I have a friend from high school that lives there and my wife and I go scalloping with him and he comes here to go scalloping with us. Only about a 2 hours drive. Crystal river is a beautiful place

I am a local and it was just a crappy year for scallops. We went out a few times and never got more than a gallon. Still always had fun but hopefully next year will be better.

Danny D-Rock Mahaffey the fish seem to be making their way in the back water for winter. The Redfish bite has been well. Head to Crystal River there's so much to do. I'm heading to swim with the manatees now.

That is my home area...been out there every year. The deputy was right...the scallops were hard to find this year!

Awweeee!!!! Thanks, Michelle!! There was so much info to get across in the video, I wasn't sure how else to do it aside from narrating. It was different for us, but seemed to have worked! Thanks so much for the feedback! As for the hair -- I cut it before our trip to Vegas and I wasn't sure if it would be TOO short... I love it, though!! John. I just moved my family to The Inverness area. Is there an area that’s better than others for scalloping ?
I thought scallop season there was around July....I have friends who say its a blast there, also they say pay the money to let them crack them for you, by the end you will wish you had. .Lol another great video ! thanks
callmepokey1 my understanding is there's no more commercial shucking. Doing it yourself is part of the fun.
We caught the very tail end of the season this year - definitely something we would do again - but like you said, we would go earlier! -Elizabeth
Hoping to go scalloping this week out of crystal river while we are down here. Itd be my guess that these spots aren't reachable by canoe so I'd have to rent a boat? Any help would be awesome!
I think you def need a boat or at least a kayak
next time nice way to finish off the day is to visit the 3 sisters springs at the end of the river

What did you think about the Mercury four Stroke ? A Friend from Washington State has twin 150 Merc 4 strokes on his 25 ' Grady - White and loves them . Way better fuel economy over his previous Yamaha 2 Strokes. Brian
Brian O the Twin River Marina has had great luck with the motors. As you can imagine lots of folks with different experience levels drive their boats and they have been holding up well.
Brian - Yeah - much better fuel efficiency and super quiet. It seemed reliable and powerful! Being on the pontoon was a different experience than our center console and we had a great time!! -Capt. Dan & Elizabeth

Hey great videos as always. I still have yet to put my Triumph 210cc in the water because last time I was going to do it was when the hurricane decided to ruin my trip. But such is life. I am going to try to make a trip down some time in the Oct. 8th to the 17th time frame. I was thinking about hitting the keys. My wife is giving me a hard time about going solo on my first trip offshore. I don’t suppose you or someone you know down there would like to show me the ropes?

If I hadn't towed my boat down from Dallas, Texas, I will rent a pontoon from the same location (4 different times).
Always go where the other boats a harvesting, just don't get too close and please be careful of other snorkelers, as most people don't recognize the legal distance you are allowed to stray away from your Dive Flag.
I see you collected both a scallop, and a starfish. We normally collect 5 gallons among my family of 4. Last time we inadvertently dropped a star fish into a cooler 1/2 full of scallops, and simultaneously the scallops went berserk, and started squirting, in an attempt to relocate away from the star fish.
If I tow my boat down, I will have a very small 350watt Honda generator, and small dry vacuum in the cuddy.
When cleaning, after soaking them in Ice/water for several hours (they should open), I find that a grape fruit spoon (has a slight cutting edge) helps open the scallops. A small dry vacuum (control of the vacuum is a perfect job for a guest or young child) is used to suck out all the "guts" ( We usually take these out to deeper water for fishing and chum up other fish). Then continue using the spoon to peel away the remain small abductor muscle.

Hey, small world! He really was a cool guy! We told him about the channel and he was so gracious when we asked his permission to include him in the video. We did come at the tail end of the season and didn't know what to expect. Like Capt. Dan said, those 5 scallops could have been 5 dozen and we wouldn't have been happier. Doug - YES! This is the same Crystal River near Ocala! We didn't HAVE to put them back, but the truth is, it really wasn't enough to eat and for it to be so little, we thought it would be best to let them go. We had SUCH an amazing time and learned a lot!! -Elizabeth & Capt. Dan

You guys were way too deep. All the scallops we got this year were all found in chest deep water. Great video anyway.
