"Okay but when will it replace stable?"
This is the wrong question, and as the lead developer not one I can answer. For those who haven't followed osu! from day one, it has been a constantly evolving project. I've never been about "releases" or "early access" or anything. osu! and lazer are something which have grown over years and will continue to grow. We will not force you to use lazer. We will continue to make it better and bring more features online until you want to use it. If you don't want to use it then you will always have the option to remain on the older version. We will continue to improve it nonetheless, and maybe one day you will decide it is where you want to be.
    "But I can't get pp!"
Well that's just a perspective issue. osu! was not always about pp. It didn't exist for many years, and people still enjoyed playing the game. Maybe this is a good chance for you to take a step back and give lazer a try, play for a different goal which isn't seeing one specific number grow. It will arrive in the future (sooner than you may expect), so don't worry. We just want to make sure everything is solid before turning it on, because if not we could jeopardise the last decade of leaderboards and user achievements.
    Thanks

Yet again though this isn't to say that there wasn't a leaderboard ranking system prior to ppv1 as before ppv1 there was the ranked score leaderboard that everyone competed in. (And it still existst today!)
This isn't to completely disregard your statement, many still played for fun and through playing for fun players would get rewarded through ranked score that would increase their rank and there weren't many who farmed score back then.
This isn't a hate comment whatsoever and we all are thankful what you have done for the game over the pass 10+ years, going from a simple ranked score leaderboard system in 2007 to a more complex system like ppv2 that factors in a bunch of different aspects of play in 2022 is really cool to see and it shows the dedication that you have to osu, something that we all appreciate!

A laser is a device that stimulates atoms or molecules to emit light at particular wavelengths and amplifies that light, typically producing a very narrow beam of radiation. The emission generally covers an extremely limited range of visible, infrared, or ultraviolet wavelengths. Many different types of lasers have been developed, with highly varied characteristics. Laser is an acronym for “light amplification by the stimulated emission of radiation.”

  • @ikkue

To simplify; it's an update, where the users themselves decide if they want to switch to it or not. The userbase decides which version is the "main" client of osu! based on active online users. Peppy will not force you to switch to it, and the goal is for it to hopefully slowly become the main client as more people switch over.
It might seem confusing because most games usually force people to update to the newest version, even with stable, but this isn't how peppy wants to do things when it comes to switching over to lazer.
TL;DR YOU decide if and when lazer will become the main client, not peppy and the devs.

@@descai10 I think that was initially the plan, to have the update button at the bottom of the screen just download lazer. But as I've seen it, they're changing it to just be an option in the Options menu, alongside stable-fallback, beta, and cutting edge.
Because like I said, peppy doesn't want to force the update onto every player, he wants the players themselves to make the decision to switch, and to make it their main client themselves
But changing the download button on the main website to download lazer is coming really soon as far as I know

So uhm, this video finally got me to decide to try laser, since it looks like you guys are pushing for it to be the new stable eventually now.
Yeah, I really don't care that there's no PP, osu laser is now my new stable. Anyone else on the fence, go get it now. It's just so much more satisfying and feature-rich than stable is. You don't even need supporter to download songs in-game and you can just browse the entire beatmap section of the website in-game, see which maps you already own and go to them, or get new maps straight into the game and play them. No draging or file opening necessary. Oh and a collections system that's way more intuitive than stable, even if it needs some more love.
Also, if you're worried about getting your maps and skins back, laser will dupe and import everything in your stable folder to your laser folder as you play, and if you don't like where the game is installed, you can migrate the entire game to wherever the hell you want on your PC within the options menu without needing a wizard and it works in SECONDS.
Yeah, it isn't perfect yet, laser still needs some QOL improvements to really shine. But it's already miles above what's already presented in current stable. Ditch the PP grind and go have some serious fun on laser. You won't regret it. Plus, if you're really a stickler for PP, laser tells you the maximum PP you could have acheived for your plays with the selected mods. So even if you don't play laser, you can use it to keep track of which maps you want to grind out if you swing that way and just love watching your pp count rise.
Dean Herbert, thank you for being one of the best game devs out there right now, and a big thanks to everyone on that GitHub that poured their time and talents into this project that is not only completely free but also a better experience than most pay to play rhythm games out there right now. Only good things are in store for osu! fans in the following years.

It's worse and note lock/slider accuracy are inherent features of the game that don't need fixing

    • @Koubles

@@Ohrami Well, I suppose that's why classic mod exists, so if you feel that way then the option is there for you. Though I'm really enjoying the new look, feel, and fresh set of features Lazer provides.
I'm sure it's a bit of a subjective thing. Without notelock I do notice I'm lasting longer on stream maps specifically. Whether you see that as good or bad I can't say, but at least I'm practicing the skill more as a result. A lot of players from all ranks have been wanting these changes from what I've seen, so it was inevitable that they'd put them into motion. I don't play at a high enough skill level to really see these kinds of tweaks making dramatic changes to my Gameplay, so it's not as big of a deal for me. However, I realize higher ranked players like you notice these things more often and have been more vocal on whether these changes are good or bad.
