Fun fact, English ‘decoy’ comes from Dutch eendenkooi. Wooden or tame ducks were used to lure wild ones into the eendenkooi. They didn’t realize that the ‘een’ part of the word wasn’t an article so they dropped it and thus ‘eendenkooi’ -> ‘decoy’ with the meaning of ‘an object to deceive’ (like the wooden/tame duck was)
4:00 That gate is always closed. The signs say it's private property but open to the public, and to please close the gate behind you. That said, I think it's still breeding season, in which case you're indeed not supposed to go in there.
Right, now I have a question: Boarding an aircraft in the USA is normally called as ON an aircraft. I honestly hope I would fly IN an aircraft, not on one.
Mudflat walking - that sea is called after it. "Wadden" are a stretch of sea where you can "wade" (verb, in Dutch: "waden"). It continues along the NW German coast to Denmark, but the wading opportunities may vary.
Love your trip through Ameland. Van Heeckeren is really nice, we stayed there in our 'there is some covid so explore your own country' period. I defintely regretted nót getting the ebikes. You must have past the Meerval farm, you can get Meerval Kibbeling over there!
So cool! Immediately when you guys mentioned De Heksenketel, I thought about the catfish and mustardsoep I had the first time I ate there (soup as a pre-course then). And especially the catfish I have since then never had as good as that first time. Baked with slices of apricot, ginger and almonds. So good. And the mosterdsoep I eat at every restaurant on the island whenever available.
Loved your video! Reminds us to go to Ameland again. About the coffee machine: It is a Jura, Swiss made. And the Swiss do not particularly mess up things, whether it is chocolate or machines. Jura manufactures the best coffee machines in the world. We have one. But it takes a little effort: adding water, remove coffee residual and water and feed new beans. I would never recommend it for a hotel. Oh, and 'droge worst' comes over from all of Europe. Italian and Spanish ar among the best. Whenever you might visit Rotterdam and the Markthal again: there is a specialised store in 'droge worst'. Many flavours, and I think 3 for EUR 10.
Been there once with schoolcamp in a kampeerboerderij somewhere in Buren I believe. Very oldschool… when bike was a word that only existed with a ‘B’ as it’s first letter. Biking away from our hometown over 30 km’s to Holwerd, with close to thirty 11-12 year olds and some teachers. With a lot of wind, not that great/safe bicycle infrastructure yet and bagagedragers packed with luggage 😅 Good memories though ☺️ En nu op naar Vlieland!!
So nice to see you in Friesland again! If you ever visit Ameland again (which you should!), be sure to go towards the west. There are a few cute villages around there, like Hollum and Ballum. Each time I'm on the island, I visit Eeterij Tante A'n for the best apple pie with whipped cream. It's sooo delicious! I took some international friends there and they loved it as well. Just outside Hollum there is a tall lighthouse as well. The view from the top is amazing! On the northside of the island, where the dunes and beaches are located, there are a few very long bike routes from Hollum to Buren. This is also where you find a four beach pavilions as well. They can get crowded, but the views are great. This is all doable without an electric bike, it just takes a bit longer. Also, sorry for the bad weather all the time. Ameland is actually one of the sunniest places in the country, though it's quite a bit colder and more windy (as you know by now). The Wadden islands can have different weather conditions compared to mainland, even though they are so close.
Today I went to Ameland for a daytrip inspired by your video, as I saw the bridge over water and The Oerd. The last time I went was between 15 and 20 years ago when I was a student. I've been mostly to Schiermonnikoog with groups and 2 times alone to Borkum since. You didn't showed much of the bicycle path through the dunes on the North-part of Ameland. My main goal was cycling towards the Oerd and the bridge, but I already got overwhelmed by the path through the dunes. I thought: If this is already so beautiful, how beautiful must The Oerd be? It is very recommending. Did you cycled that path too? I walked also the 4km walk through the Oerd. Again I got overwhelmed by how beautiful it was. There where even more of those wooden bridges. 2 weeks earlier I came back from 2 weeks of cycling through the Balkan and that was very disappointing, mostly how it was organized, so this was a bit of a compensation. I thought: Why am I going all the way to the Balkan, if I can also just go within 2,5 hours to Ameland by bus and train? I even went to the same beach as you did. I was completely alone! Far, far away I saw some people, but that must be over a km away. The water was surprisingly warm. I just walked in without shivering. The weather was also much better than you had. It started cloudy, but it got sunnier during the day and around 20 degrees.
Looked like a normal silver onion(i could be wrong), Amsterdam onions are more yellow due to the added spices and saffron i think. Both are yum tho, especially an Amsterdam onion with jong or jong/belegen cube of gouda cheese.
Nice vlog of Ameland never been there myself while being dutch. Great to see how easy and relax you guys are on that nudist beach, would never dare it myself haha

Ameland is actually the most ‘reserved’ of the Waddeneilanden in terms of nudism. On Vlieland, for example, nudity is allowed on all beaches around the island (except for a small section between paal 50 and 51, which is directly in front of the beach hotel). Terschelling is also an island where nudity is allowed on all beaches. Although it is not always appreciated by tourists. But it is normal to see the local people take a skinny dip in the early morning, before work or school.
that wasn't a ship, it's a natural gas drilling rig. Nude beaches are great. Friendly people, and less of a crowd than "regular" ones. Sadly I can't cycle far enough to enjoy Ameland (disability) or I'd love to visit there.
I remember cycling for hours on paths close to the sea. Great nature. Maybe it's a language thing but here in Belgium catfish and meerval tend to be the same thing. At least when we're talking about eating. In the aquarium world things are more detailed.
Little aquarium cat fish are also great to look at, They've got such great personalities. Like, my two bristlenose catfish Peppi & Kokki either hang from the glass, munch on wood of freak each other out. My bandit corydoras have such a fun way of moving about and they are a true cory gang. My new school of pygmy corydoras are too cute for words and my otocinclus just like to chill.
As a native born someone from Haarlem (near Amsterdam) visit Haarlem for some special architecture and restaurants. I can recommend restaurants like De Kale Pater or Napoli (Italian kitchen but realy reaaaaallllyyy good). Haarlem is very close to Zandvoort which is close by the sea and it's also near the dunes for great cycling routes =)
The Jura cannot make real espresso (Italian style) but can make a mean lungo. Depending on the beans you feed it. The "flushing" is not to get rid of water but to remove stale coffee residuals from its pipes. You only need a tall cup under it to collect the shut-down flush and the start-up flush. I run serious barista kit at home but have lived with this machine's ancestor in the 1980s. It would "tamp" the grind and "pre-infuse" the dry puck. It needed preventive maintenance that made TCO high, though. Barista kit is not better at that, but can be much more expensive. For a hotel room, this is luxury indeed.
Driemaal is scheepsrecht, so the next time you're in Friesland you'll have perfect weather 😉 Grote kans dat de mosterd in de soep van de koren- en mosterdmolen in Hallum kwam. Je kunt de molen bezichtigen en het winkeltje verkoopt veel Amelander producten. Also when heading to the west side of the island, you can climb up the light house and have a nice view. Bedankt voor weer een leuke video!
The catfish most likely is Pangasius, a commercially grown fish (en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Pangasius). It is often a substitute for more expensive fish like Sole. At least they where honest at the restaurant...
We've been to Ameland several times but I never knew that it had a nude beach, not that this is of particular interest to me. We always stayed on a camping called 'Klein Vaarwater' and went to the beach with our two sons that was on walking distance.
@@buncharted the soup is never eaten as hot as it is served😜 Ok, probably not what you meant 😉. It means something like: things arent as bad as they look initially.
I have never bin to Ameland. So thank you for this nice video. O at some point Michelle, i hate Lays chips. And i think mini golf is best on a small illand. Tanks for the nice video.Ruud Purmerend. ❤
As a child I jave spend many vacations on Ameland. Absolutely fantastic place. We always stayed in the town of Buren on a camping called "Klein Vaarwater" (small waterway/boating area). Still have fond memories even after almost 4 decades. Thank you Ameland, you made my childhood vacations awesome. there is a distinct lack of "Trapkarren" presence in your video. Are they gone? ) the "trapkar" is a steel kart/bike hybrid they are, or at least were, available in 2, 4, 6, or 8 people capacity. In your salad I see a silver onion, not an Amsterdam Onion. Silver onions and Amsterdam onions are made from the same type of onion but pickled differently. making the Amsterdam onions yellow (because one of the ingredients for them is safron) while the silver onions are white. Amsterdam onions also tend to have grown a bit longer making them a bit bigger. Just Google Amsterdamse Uien and you will see all pictures being of yellow onions.
@@buncharted aww.. It used to be one of my favorite things on the island. My parents would rent a two seate for me and my nephew and we were let loose on the island (we were of course very well behaved kids, we only got into trouble... I wanna say once a day? lmao)
Lang geleden op ameland geweest. Camperen bij Nes. Fietsen gehuurd, picknick mand gemaakt en naar het Oerd gereden. Tot ver in de zandduinen en ons eigen nudistenstrand gemaakt. Mooie herinneringen.
The longest people in the world don't play Mini Golf, we play Midgetgolf! 🤪 By the way, those aren't Amsterdam Onions, those are Silver Onions (Zilveruitjes). Amsterdam Onions are yellow and most of the time a little bit bigger! 😁✌🏼
There's no need to hate the coffee machine. Put a mug under the coffee tap, switch on. If it's done with the startup cycle, remove the mug and make your coffee. Than put the mug back and either switch off or let it on till it auto switches off. What remains is just love for the coffee machine that makes the best tasting coffee (acc. all tests), and a mug you have to empty once a day 😉
Ow no.. there’s a reals difference between how fresh fish is versus not so fresh anymore. As a former ‘i dont like fishy fish’ person i had to learn theres a world of difference between a recently caught fresh fish and supermarket or dingy restaurant salmon. I basicly only had runins with dicy on the freshness scale. But then i went to a good restaurant and i had fish that changed my palet and knowledge forever. I frequently eat fish now thats much better than any meat i ever had!
Hot Soup? You know the dutch saying "De soep wordt niet zo heet gegeten als hij wordt opgediend" Good luck translating that I love you guys and your perfectly positive tour of the Netherlands
13:00 those aren't Amsterdam onions though... Amsterdam onions are yellow. What's in this salad is silver onions (zilveruitjes). The colour matters. :D
Cooool!!! I love Ameland. And I like your video about Ameland. One remark: in the beginning of the video you said that you were 'in Ameland'. In Dutch, when you are talking about an island, you use the preposition 'on/op'. So you should say that you are 'on Ameland', not in. You could say you are 'In Nes, Hollum, Buren or Ballum', but you are 'on Ameland'. This also applies to some places that used to be an island but aren't anymore, like the village of Urk. Urk is a village situated in the Noordoostpolder, one of the famous parts of land that were created by the Dutch ('God created earth, the Dutch created the Netherlands'). Urk used to be an island, but after claiming land from the Zuiderzee (now called the 'IJsselmeer') it became a coastal place and wasn't an island anymore. Nevertheless, people still say they live 'op/on Urk" rather than 'in Urk'. And there are more villages that have the preposition 'on' instead of 'in'. In the provinces Friesland and Groningen several villages were built on a hill, to withstand high water. In Friesland these hills are called a 'terp' and in Groningen these hills are called a 'wierde' In some of the names of Frisian and Groningen villages you can recognise these words. Living in a village that was built on a hill, made the inhabitants say they live 'on the village', rather than saying they live 'in the name of the village'. I'm sure this will not apply to all villages, so I am sure I will get reactions that will say I am wrong. But in several villages that were built on a hill against high water, the inhabitants said (and still say) they live "op(on) X".
12:13 well the thing about fishy is not that one does not like fisch but it is a sign that the fisch is not fresh and it is starting to smell and taste fishy.
Thanks for the video. Funny to see your hotel room is full of product placement, they are trying to sell you stuff, the recording players and audio and especially the Jura automatic coffee maker is way too expensive for a hotel room.
You should go to Limburg in the south of the netherlands, you have a lot of nice places to like Vaals it the 3 lands point. ( the netherlands, Germany and Belgium )
That Kooiplaats is anything but a duck sanctuary. An "eendenkooi" (duck cage) is a place for trapping and catching passing ducks and ducks usually did not survive the experience.
Catfish is a fresh water fish - I would never expect that on Ameland. And so I would never order it when there. Note that the "fishy" smell that (dead) fish can have is a sign of decay. Up to a point that is not bad and can be masked by proper heating and some lemon juice, but beyond that point, ammonia starts to build in the dead fish tissue and this is easily recognisable. That ammonia would damage your mucous membranes if you ate it. Memories go back to two guys from a restaurant showing off the halibut of which they would prepare a piece for me. It was on a 1" wooden board and its size about 2'*3' at least. It didn't smell like fish and was perfectly fresh from the harbour. They cut up the entire fish for all the tables that night. I love fish, but have this sensitivity to be able to discern the stages of decay. My wife does not taste/smell it. Must be genetic.
I also prefer a normal bike for everyday riding. A couple of years ago, I tried a rental on Texel with manual acceleration, you know this little manual gear on the steering, and hand brakes, but I haven't used hand brakes for so very long I couldn't get used to it again. I used to have a bike like that, back when I was in uni. My sensory issues involved with autism have gotten worse over the years and I couldn't tap into any muscle memory from those days. It's gone. I only know how to paddle back on my own bike in order to brake. And I drive a manual gear car, wouldn't want anything else. 🥰 Droge worst For The Win!
Fun fact: the English word "decoy" derives from the Dutch word "eendenkooi". This happened after the concept of a duck-catching pond was introduced to the English. Another fun fact: a special breed of dog was used for luring the ducks in, the so-called "Kooikerhondje". They are not very common, but you still can see one once in a while.
Oh no a cliffhanger! Do I need to tune in next week to find out what Alex's favorite Beatles record is? Presumably one that has the Beatles playing on it, not the BeeGees and whomever Peter Frampton is? Anyway, mine is Revolver.
We were there the same weekend! Feeling unlucky to not have seen you. 🫣 Hope you didn’t get too much rain and really enjoyed your stay on the island we love so much. 👍
@@buncharted we visit the island with the whole family every year. I’m close to my 20th visit, but my family in law have been going 34 years in a row! 🫣 We just hang out and enjoy the island. We stay at a really old farmhouse in Buren (last house when you go to the Eendenkooi). Great that you enjoyed the island, ate the catfish, the droge worst from Dennis and had the mustard soup. Happy adventuring and discovering! 🤗👍
Ameland has a very rich history. For a long time,Ameland took a special position in the Kingdom /republic of the Netherlands (sometimes the Netherlands were a kingdom, sometimes we were a republic). Ameland was a so called 'free lordship' in the Netherlands, let's call it a sovereign part of the Netherlands. Only in 1813 Ameland became part of (submitted to) the Netherlands, whereas the rest of the country united long before. This attitude to the central power still leaves its marks. The people of Ameland still have the mentality of being free and independent, even though they know they aren't anymore. The heart and the head. Up to and including 1988, the life guard boat of Ameland was transported by horses, also into the sea. Ameland was unique in this matter. It went wrong in 1979, when the life boat was launched into the sea and all the horses drowned by the launch. A horrible story that is remembered yearly on Ameland. The launch of the lifeboat by horses is a tourist event now. And to avoid the disaster of 1979 to happen again, the sea is inspected thoroughly before the horses are led into the sea. It's cool to sea and I recommend everyone who visits Ameland to go see it.
Just a small thing too add. When you're on a island you say ON Ameland niet IN Ameland, since you can not be in a island😅 also, there are nudist beaches in NL. Nudism isnt something weird and its even more natural then using clothes. Its only that a lot of countries conpair nudism with sex and thats just wrong.
Jeetje Mina! Da's effe lang geleden dat ik op Ameland ben geweest. De laatste keer was in de 60-gurr jaren. Maar toen hadden we nog echte seasons, all 4 of them! Lekker!! Also, Ik weet niet hoe goed jullie Nederlands kunnen verstaan maar Wim Sonneveld (Dutch cabaret artist and singer 1917 - 1974) sang a French song in Dutch. It was called: Het Dorp. De volgende keer dat jullie in een oud dorpje of stad bent, luister dan naar: ruclips.net/video/C8Ff5OEUzd8/видео.htmlsi=YBy1dq1pV1c-byQw
15:12 -- that was NOT a Beatles record! That was the soundtrack album from the waste of celluloid that was the Sgt. Pepper movie, the one where Peter Frampton and the Bee Gees sucker half the music industry into doing bad Beatles covers. The only good cover that came out of the whole disaster was Earth Wind and Fire doing _Got To Get You Into My Life_ . The rest was... 🤮
Slim vrouwke. Using jumbo zilveruitjes is better than the kesbeke ones. The shop brand is only sugar. Kesbeke uses artificial sweetener in EVERY product they make.
Fun fact, English ‘decoy’ comes from Dutch eendenkooi. Wooden or tame ducks were used to lure wild ones into the eendenkooi.
Y'all have seen more of The Netherlands than the average Dutch person by now lol. I think we should at least reach 30k by this year btw!!!
haha when you wrote 50k originally i was like "hey, ok, but i think that's REALLY optimistic..." 😂
@@buncharted Hahaha true, honestly I expected the subscriber count to be higher somehow. 30 should be doable though 8-)
Your cover photo for this video is a work of pure Art!
We've been to Ameland several times but I never knew that it had a nude beach, not that this is of particular interest to me. We always stayed on a camping called 'Klein Vaarwater' and went to the beach with our two sons that was on walking distance.
Great moment to learn the Dutch proverb: "De soep wordt nooit zo heet gegeten als ze wordt opgediend"
but what does it mean 😅
@@buncharted the soup is never eaten as hot as it is served😜
Ok, probably not what you meant 😉.
Just Google Amsterdamse Uien and you will see all pictures being of yellow onions.
i didn’t see any! i don’t think there were any at the bike rental place either. i did see a lot of tandem bikes though 😂
@@buncharted aww.. It used to be one of my favorite things on the island. My parents would rent a two seate for me and my nephew and we were let loose on the island (we were of course very well behaved kids, we only got into trouble... I wanna say once a day? lmao)
Nice video...as always 👍❤️
Lang geleden op ameland geweest. Camperen bij Nes. Fietsen gehuurd, picknick mand gemaakt en naar het Oerd gereden. Tot ver in de zandduinen en ons eigen nudistenstrand gemaakt. Mooie herinneringen.

A: "... and that's an amateur move..."
M: "... (long pause, points finger) ... no... it's an intermediate move..."
Hilarious
The longest people in the world don't play Mini Golf, we play Midgetgolf! 🤪
By the way, those aren't Amsterdam Onions, those are Silver Onions (Zilveruitjes). Amsterdam Onions are yellow and most of the time a little bit bigger! 😁✌🏼
ahhh i thought they were the same thing. good catch!
haha was thinking the same thing. Amsterdamsche uitjes are yellow because they use saffron in the pickling process
In my experience, when someone says it's too "fishy", it means it's not very fresh.
That's not a Beatles album. Lol,
Thanks for the tour of Ameland. I've actually never explored northern Netherlands.
haha well, it sort of is
guess it’s a cover album
Don't sleep on your snelbinders. Nice vid!
There's no need to hate the coffee machine. Put a mug under the coffee tap, switch on. If it's done with the startup cycle, remove the mug and make your coffee. Than put the mug back and either switch off or let it on till it auto switches off. What remains is just love for the coffee machine that makes the best tasting coffee (acc. all tests), and a mug you have to empty once a day 😉
haha i’m just surprised there wasn’t a note about it somewhere near it - the first time it happened i was like AHH
Great one again. ❤❤
I went to the US in 2017 and it was like going to a different planet. I really wish I could experience what it would be like the other way around.
Ow no.. there’s a reals difference between how fresh fish is versus not so fresh anymore.
Lucky me as family we have a mobile home (stacaravan) on Ameland at Roosdunen Ballum.
Hot Soup? You know the dutch saying "De soep wordt niet zo heet gegeten als hij wordt opgediend"
Good luck translating that
I love you guys and your perfectly positive tour of the Netherlands
13:00 those aren't Amsterdam onions though... Amsterdam onions are yellow. What's in this salad is silver onions (zilveruitjes). The colour matters. :D
Are you going to visit curacao, bonaire and aruba as well?
eventually! we'd really, really love to but it's a much bigger trip :)
If you like "fishy" fish, I would suggest getting some canned cod liver or haddock liver on oil and put that on some buttered toast.
Looks like you had a great time on that beautiful island.
( the netherlands, Germany and Belgium )
ruclips.net/video/5Zvq6FYcxx0/видео.html < our playlist of all of our limburg vlogs, including the drielandenpunt :)
will you be back to flevonatuur this summer?
probably not even though we’d really like to. it’s difficult to get to without a car
Ahh a shame. Would have loved to meet you guys.
That Kooiplaats is anything but a duck sanctuary. An "eendenkooi" (duck cage) is a place for trapping and catching passing ducks and ducks usually did not survive the experience.
now though, it’s a duck sanctuary i think?
@@bunchartedMost likely yes, trapping ducks really isn’t en vogue anymore.
Catfish = Meerval ('Moretrap' hahaha)
Great video! Next time I hope you will visit my favorite island Vlieland. It's a bikers paradise!
for sure - maybe this fall!
The dutch pronunciations are definitely getting better!
That Max bag can be used for many things!
Welcome in Friesland. Greetings from Witmarsum...
Not all islands up there are Frisian. Texel (tessel) is part of Noord-Holland.
Little detail…. Small white pickled onions are called “zilveruitjes” if the colour is yellow its named “Amsterdamse uitjes”
Droge worst For The Win!
Fun fact: the English word "decoy" derives from the Dutch word "eendenkooi". This happened after the concept of a duck-catching pond was introduced to the English. Another fun fact: a special breed of dog was used for luring the ducks in, the so-called "Kooikerhondje". They are not very common, but you still can see one once in a while.
haha thank you, if it wasn’t obvious in the video this place confused us quite a bit 😂
Very good 'droge worst' pronunciation!
Heksenketel = witches cauldron, also meaning a very busy, complicated situation.
Next week the weather will be nice, promise you
Oh no a cliffhanger! Do I need to tune in next week to find out what Alex's favorite Beatles record is? Presumably one that has the Beatles playing on it, not the BeeGees and whomever Peter Frampton is? Anyway, mine is Revolver.
mine is revolver!!!!
Nice Joppies!
We were there the same weekend! Feeling unlucky to not have seen you. 🫣 Hope you didn’t get too much rain and really enjoyed your stay on the island we love so much. 👍
we had a great time! were you there for the beach rugby tournament??
@@buncharted we visit the island with the whole family every year. I’m close to my 20th visit, but my family in law have been going 34 years in a row! 🫣 We just hang out and enjoy the island. We stay at a really old farmhouse in Buren (last house when you go to the Eendenkooi). Great that you enjoyed the island, ate the catfish, the droge worst from Dennis and had the mustard soup. Happy adventuring and discovering! 🤗👍
the clouds will not clear!
Omg, can't people lift up a chair anymore?
hahahaha
Summer still loading....... read error..... Summer postponed, please try again later.....
The Netherlands are obviously running on Windows.
Jeetje Mina! Da's effe lang geleden dat ik op Ameland ben geweest. De laatste keer was in de 60-gurr jaren. Maar toen hadden we nog echte seasons, all 4 of them! Lekker!!
Also, Ik weet niet hoe goed jullie Nederlands kunnen verstaan maar Wim Sonneveld (Dutch cabaret artist and singer 1917 - 1974) sang a French song in Dutch.
It was called: Het Dorp. De volgende keer dat jullie in een oud dorpje of stad bent, luister dan naar:

Fun fact 90 % of all croissants are made in one factory in The Netherlands.
where?!
Not sure about that percentage, but i guess you are talking about Délifrance??
😀 *Am e land*
🌊 *Am e sea*
🇺🇲 Am e rika ...
Haha i think you were brave to go naked on the beach in that weather, looked cold to me!
it was chilly with the wind but we had been riding those bikes directly into the strong winds down by the nassaukooi and we were exhausted 😅
Somebody call France, a croissant was murdered this morning
So I can play my own reggae, rock & roll and metal albums over there? Cool!!!
haha i have a ton of records at home too but i’d be scared to bring them all the way to ameland 😅
@@buncharted I'd bring just a few favorites 😉
Technically its on Ameland not in Ameland, as the locals say: only rabbits are in Ameland.
i had no idea such a movie existed
that’s probably for the best 😂
Slim vrouwke. Using jumbo zilveruitjes is better than the kesbeke ones. The shop brand is only sugar. Kesbeke uses artificial sweetener in EVERY product they make.
😊😊
If it aint my favourite americans trying out the Dutch life.
