Kabbalah - A Kabbalistic Magic text for producing a Magical Cloak - The Sefer HaMalbush

  • The magical cloak is a common motif in both the history and mythology of magic. In this episode, I explore a c 10th century ce text of Jewish Magic which describes the production of a magical cloak imbued with Divine and Angelic names - The Sefer HaMalbush or the Book of the Garment. I also explore a similar text - the Sefer HaYashar - which describes similar divine names along with a series of astral-angelic correspondences! Both texts go on to become important texts in both Kabbalah and Jewish magic more generally.

    It’s also interesting to note that Gypsy woman during the dark ages, would often use embroidery to decorate her weeding veil with family knowledge and symbolism. The fasting I believe is to fit into the dress though. The magic seemed to happen after the veil came off.

    Great episode! Why do people write these intense spells? Who are the people writing them? They're definitely educated and well versed in Jewish magical practice. What is the motivation for writing the book of the garment? Also, would anyone really go through with all the demands to have such a powerful tool? These are unknowns, but is there a best conjecture as to writing and/or performing this and similar spells?

    • @andrewburch7776

      I wonder if it was a psychological process, only they didn’t realize it. Sort of like the alchemists.

    • @darkartsbyadrienne
      @darkartsbyadrienne 2 года назад +6

      @@andrewburch7776 good question! Like was the writer thinking, "I bet no one will ever follow through on this to know if it's effective." Or of someone did do the whole thing exactly and didn't get the desired results thought, "I must have messed up somewhere." And many people wouldn't be performing the garment ritual mostly because they'd never have access to the manuscript. And if they did they'd have to be educated and knowledgeable in many of the corresponding systems to begin to understand it. I see these complicated spells almost as a competition between two masters in training. Who can write the most impressive spell incorporating all their learning and knowledge. Folk magic I understand because it's not complicated and makes you feel like you're somewhat in control- like curse tablets or even something as simple as writing a person's name or using an image of them and tearing it up or lighting it on fire. Stuff that is as prolonged as the garment or Abramelin ritual is too much work, definitely for my modern sensibility, but maybe back in the day, those in a cloistered existence, with little to eat any way were like, "sure, why not? Not much else going on anyway..." Maybe it was a personal challenge to see if you could be as disciplined as the text demands? I don't know, but it's super interesting to think about. Maybe the writer and/or practitioner really believed in magic too. I mean, they certainly believed in other non-tangible beliefs. But fascinating that they applied so much of their physical reality into a. writing the ritual and b. performing it (if they did). I guess only they'll know their motivations.
