BTW if you are using cycles you can instance points, like there is a node that just says point, and its better for performance and is as smooth as the resolution of your render.

Would this work fully by using the 'points' node instead of the Ico Sphere? I understand they're perfectly smooth and don't add to the geometry overheads, so to speak.

It's a hard balance to strike. A little fast for me. Most other tutorials are to slow so I speed them up. He is the first one I've had to slow down.
