It’s very helpful in a world with hardly anything covering e36 convertibles

The reason you have to pull the on the window so it doesn't hit the storage lid is because the tension straps between the canvas top and the headliner is worn out. Replace those and you won't have a problem.

please... i beg you stop grabbing the plastic window... you're gonna get oil marks on it and it will nicely cook into the sun.
if you get this problem you can do the following:
      1. Change tension straps (forever solved)
      2. Wash your top with fabric softener. If the top material was really dry and the tension straps still have some elasticity in them this will work a while. Maybe 2-4 week solution if it's summer and hot outside.
      3. If nothing works than stop pressing the roof button when it gets to this point. GET OUT OF THE CAR, grab the U shaped from UNDER Window and push it forward lightly. After that continue pressing the roof button.

I remember using some medical grade tubing and tying / fixing them to specific bars under the headliner. After a few adjustments, fully operational from the button. Was a good day, but long day from my memory. I think I did a new rear plastic window that I could never get perfect.

A agree, skin oil will definitely help with sun baking :) (which we don't want). I've should mention that in the video :)
      1. Straps replaced 3 times in 9 years of ownership. Las Vegas dry/heat simply loosen them up too quick.
      2. Fabric softener is a good point, I haven't think of that.
      3. That is a good point too. :)
      4. The car is sold, hopefully the top still works :)

This car is so identical to my car (except for the seat color and the nice cruise control you have which I don’t) ! I also used to do the same exact things you describe in precisely the same manner; but I fixed the tensioner straps so I don’t have to help it as much so the tonneau cover is clear for lifting because the repaired tensioning straps pull the vinyl window bar toward the front. Overall at 24 years old - this is the best we can ask for !

I absolutely agree with you about tension straps. In 9 years of ownership I've replaced those 3 times. I live in very dry/hot climate, the straps loose tenson quick in this condition.

very good your video. I have a question for you, I have an E36 1994 convertible but with a lever that opens and closes the roof. What is curious to me is that once I open the lever I activate the button to open the roof and I have to accompany it with my hand for a short distance , because otherwise it does not open by itself. Is that how it works? To save it, it does it perfectly and in the end I finish closing it with the lever that I mentioned to you. thank you so much!

Hello there, thank you! Sorry for the late reply. I hope this answer is still relevant to you :). You have a semiautomatically top (it has two motors) in my opinion is a better one because it has 1 motor less to break :). To answer you question, if that would be 30 years ago then probably it won't be normal. But considering the age of the car, the fabric gotten harden, the motor weaken, I think is totally fine to give a little help with the hand.

Your tensioner straps on roof are gone thats why is requiring so much help, personally repaired many e36 roof and they was working without any help.

You are absolutely right. I owned that car for 12 years. Replaced those straps 3 times, I live in Las Vegas, and the dry heat here weakens the straps within 2-3 years.

logical video, if you dont want to destroy your motors if your e36 is very old!

all E36's are "Old" and Are old enough to drink,,, lol,,, I am gonna take my car to a specialist to "Tune" my Top so it works ,,, all my motors work but my Top cover motor is not synced with the other folding motor,,,

I hope they were able to find and fix the issue. There are no synching on your motor. There are position sensors that activates and deactivates the motors based on the position of the top.

Hi, thanks for the video. Do you know if I can replace the fully electric hood with the manualy in e36?

Hi, thank you for watching. I haven't done such a conversion. But I believe that it would be possible since they both are installed in the same chassis and have the same size.
