Really appreciate your no nonsense approach and practical advice on this. I’ve got a 95 (non evo) M3 that I’m working on. Looking forward to tensioner strap repair video! Keep it up.

great explanation about the straps, thank you for that great video. I own an E36 convertible and have that problem, it's such a pain i can't just press the button but i have to push and pull here and there in order for it to open and close properly. thanks again and keep up with the good content, i'm loving it!

Great information! I'm so glad I found your channel. We are going to replace the top and straps on our 99 E36. I am looking for more information on repairing the straps rather than replacing them.

Hey man great videos, Huge inspiration. But one quick question, how would you go upon sewing on the new elastic straps? Ive cut new ones the same size they came off, but im thinking, i need to strecth out the new elastic straps because it makes sense cause the old ones were strecthed out, but only a little bit. Any advice? I might just sew them on with no strecth if I get no reply hah.

Good solid information and thanks for making this video. Those tension straps are essential for the top lowering and raising process to work correctly. I just did the top, tension straps, and headliner replacement on my newly acquired 1999 M3 convertible this past summer.
I did the same thing on my 1999 323i convertible 3 years ago. One of my concerns is when the car is stored for the winter with the top up, it seems as though the cold temps for extended periods of time cause the straps to lose the elasticity quicker. It’s only been 3 years and I noticed the signs of the straps wearing out already on my 323i this past summer. Our winters are long and cold here in the Northeast, as I’m sure they are where you are located.
Anyway, great stuff and keep them coming.
PLEASE, PLEASE, PLEASE…finish the editing of the passenger side seat cover replacement process video. And I hope you will make a video of the rear seat cover replacement, as well. I have all the seats out of the M3 and they are in my house. I will be ordering from LSeats.com for sure. They will be just one of my winter projects and I’m anxious to get started. Also have the door cards inside too.
    Thanks, my friend!

So if i buy a new soft top i wont have to worry about replacing those. I ask because if a new cover is 400 why would i spend 130 for the tension straps

    • @ProblemSolverGarage

I would replace them or repair them, they prevent the roof from jamming and they help it fold

When the rear bow "slams" down, iirc, there is a small shock absorber on the right main roof hinge that should prevent the slamming.

I will have to check that, I thought it was the tensioning straps

@@ProblemSolverGarage you’re welcome. The shock is pretty tiny and hidden deep inside the compartment. I bought a new one years ago, but never got around fitting it. Need to revisit that.
