Next recording to come from the IND Rockaway Line ( • NYC Subway HD Audio: B... ). Enjoy =)

I rode theR179 maybe twice or three times, and I wasn’t sure what I think about the sound at first. But it grown on me a few years later. Could’ve used a different motor sound, but I guess this is ok! what do you guys think about the sound?

The problem with getting 3 phase sounds for OpenBVE is the second sound, The first sound is easy for the 179 because it's steady, the third on is good because you can get a steady section that you can then use ad adjust pitch too. The second one though has constant pitch changes and when it reaches it's nominal level switches to either the 3rd phase if accelerating or 1st phase when decelerating. Making it almost impossible to get a steady sample that can be manipulated in OpenBVE

tf51d I’ve already found a solution to this with my Siemens pack and I’m using a similar method on my R179

Even though it’s not absolutely perfect, it’s within the limits of OpenBVE

For Phase two take this video at about 7:25 you will have a good second or two to sample. Use RUclips2mp3, use any sound program you want, I use Audacity. Clip that sound byte and effects > repeat > reverse. Then make it as long as you want.

God those propulsion motors sound so nice! I like the older MITRAC motors on the R143 and the R142A more then the newer ones on the R179 but it sounds completely sick!

I know right. Those screaming high pitch propulsion motors is crazy good. I gotta venture to New York one day.

For some reason when at slow speed, R179 sounds like Taoyuan Airport MRT, which uses Mitsubishi Electric IGBT-VVVF.

Took a risk and left my camera on the floor while I stood on the other side of the door inside the passenger compartment. As far as I know, I wasn't breaking any rules lol. #Loophole

Really don't need to. Gravity is plenty force to keep the equipment from moving around too much. The trains don't accelerate or brake fast enough to cause them to slide off the anticlimbers.

I'm an electric vehicle consultant for a living. I'm curious why the pwm switching is so pronounced and loud on these setups in the R179?
I mean I'm sure it's loud because of where the camera is outside the train but usually this isn't that noticeable in most vehicle setups unless you're right on top of the motor or inverter.
I also wonder why they didn't change the frequency up or down a bit so it doesn't reverberate in the station so much?
Most powertrains will let you set the low speed pwm frequency to favor either smoothness and more noise over quietness and some potential vibration.
It's usually fairly use case and vehicle-specific if you go high or low frequency to make it as smooth and quiet as possible.
    Thanks for the video!

Haha yea, I've always wondered from a volume perspective, the points you bring up. Especially when you have other manufacturers like GE who makes their locomotive inverters virtually silent. This would probably be something you'd need to ask an engineer from Bombardier about.

@@FanRailer I think it's a safety thing, for track workers to hear the train from afar. Especially in an instance where someone has fallen onto the tracks, they can hear the train from much further away.

It's too loud because the camera is located closer to the motors/bogies and this is a part of the train car hardly anyone cares about, its only to move between cars
