    The sound when it's pulling off just fills me with nostalgia and love for NYC. I never knew about how there's different trains that make different noises and so I always believed it was just the wheels by chance screeching on the tracks as it would accelerate. I admire the R160's electric propulsion motors now.

    At King's Highway, there is a R68 racing the R160B Alstom when departing. The howl sound of the Westinghouse 1447J and the step-by-step Alstom ONIX 800 4LCA1640A have a perfect match for the motors!

    Sound almost like the R142s but those use the 1st generation Alstom propulsion. The R160s uses the 2nd generation propulsion.

    380-665-1290 Hz is the acceleration pattern with 1430-1240 Hz used alternating during cruising. The process is reverse when decelerating.

    I’d love to know what the amperage draw of each traction motor is when these things start accelerating.

    • @FanRailer
      @FanRailer  4 года назад +9

      AC motor amperage actually builds as the train maintains a set acceleration rate while speed increases. starting amperage is close to 0 and builds up to about 350 or so amps per motor around 15-17 mph, at which time acceleration and amperage start to taper off.

    Why does the engine sound like that?

    • @iitrapezoid_8243
      @iitrapezoid_8243 3 года назад +9

      Think of it like the engine of a car: Multiple gears for different speeds / strength. The R160 propulsion uses electric pulsing as 'gears.' thats the noise you hear, the propulsion at work. ;)

      @Bye Bye! no, R160B Alstom. There are R160B sets that have the Alstom propulsion. R160A-2 and R160B Alstom sets look and sound similar, which is the reason for the confusion. This R160 class set that you see in this video is a Kawasaki R160B equipped with the Alstom propulsion running on the Brighton Line signed up as a (Q) Train to Coney Island - Stillwell Avenue. You can tell that this is an R160B just by listening to how the door opens and closes. The door motors on the R160As are very loud and robotic, whereas the R160B that you see in this video has door motors that are so quiet that you can't hear the door motors at all. It's completely silent. Remember this as this is extremely important information that you are required to know as a railfan. Trust me, look it up. I promise you, I'm telling the truth.
