I keep thinking of upgrading from my C100 MK 1 but I keep convincing myself to keep it as it just does what I need it to do. Whether it’s stinger work, documentary work and client projects, this thing has paid for itself many times over. Can’t beat internal NDs and the dual pixel upgrade my c100 has works flawlessly. Yeah, it doesn’t have 4K but I have never had anyone ask me to deliver a project in 4K.
For sure I totally agree. The tough part about getting a new camera or even different system is having all the you have with this camera at a reasonable price point. It’s really hard to beat.
Got a C300 with 5 batteries, two cards and an extra wooden handle for 450 Euros. One of my best purchases ever. It's so much fun to shoot with it and the look is special!
Excellent review! I've been shooting with Canon for years, and I fell in love with this camera a few years ago. I bought two and a C300 for live events. They always looked amazing. I'm selling my C100s now only because I still have the C300, and I just bought a C300 mk ii for the 4k capability (for a specific project coming up on the west coast). Canon's xf405 and xf605 are also amazing. I use those for livestreamed events now because the fixed lenses make it more of an ENG camera. No fuss with lenses and worrying about focal length. I'm gonna miss my C100s. Thanks for showing it the love it deserves in your review. A monster workhorse camera...
Absolutely! Thank you. I’m thinking about the C300 as well now. I love how canon has out of the box ready cameras. They may seem expensive but when you compare them to other systems, what you get for the price is hard to beat.
This brings me SO MUCH JOY - my C100 is my true lifelong "ride or die". I may have some Sony stuff these days... but this rig is my favorite of all time. Agreed, it holds up in today's market which is amazing. Great video thank you!
Good video with nice examples. I'm part of the C100 (M2) cult and I still shoot with it in 2023. (definitely worth buying the M2 if you can) It's just a solid workhorse, with a great feature set, tiny gradable files and still very respectable image quality. I'm looking to upgrade to 4K before too long but once you've had built in NDs and audio it's hard to go back. Also insane battery life. Thanks for the notes on black balance. I also agree - the inability to move the focus point is my biggest gripe. The dual pixel autofocus is still respectable.
Thanks! I totally agree with you. Once you have certain features it's hard to not have them anymore, especially when it's all in one and you don't have to build out your camera with all types of attachments. I definitely want to mess around with other camera systems, but the C100 is great for any type of work that you're doing.
I own c100 mkii. I have it paired with Sigma 18-35 1.8 cpl ND and 150-600 c with cpl. Get a good tripod. I use newer pro heavy duty with tilt and pan friction adjustment for smooth shots. 1 touch dual pixel auto focus and spot wave form in square box is what I use to expose log on target
Just ordered one from MPB today. Traded in an old Canon T7i crop sensor DSLR so I only paid $429 for it. I’m wondering since it has a 4K sensor, If I connect an atmos Ninja V if it will take the 4K sensor data and kick out a 4K video. I’m happy either way but that should be interesting to find out.
My first cinema camera ever and was my workhorse for many years! I am always pleasantly surprised by the image from this camera when I look at it again after so many years! Like Owlbot said in his C100 video, best 8bit footage you will ever see in a camera hands down! WideDR on the camera is also so beautiful SOOC if you know what you're doing when exposing.
Great video! I watched/listened to it in my car coming over the 17 from Santa Cruz on my way to buy my C100 mark 1 DP. It’s been about a month, and I have finally figured out the color and lighting profile I absolutely love. I’m using it primarily for a podcast setup with direct XLR plug-ins for my Rode PodMics. I’m not the best at color grading and thought that would be the only way I would ever be able to use the footage but as I mentioned I played with some settings and I’m getting a Super great Video color profile product out of the camera directly. Thanks for the recommendation. The ND filters & batteries are also awesome! One question I have is how do I get the longer videos to save as ONE video & not MULTIPLE shorter videos?
Thanks!..I’m not sure if you can get one big file instead of a bunch of broken up files. Every camera that I’ve ever used that uses the avchd codec always produces these types of files.
@@JonathanKMoore Thanks for your response. I just added an Atomos ninja v to my C100 Mark 1. With the LUTs added I don't think I'll be using the avchd files other than as a backup because I'll be getting the video directly from the recorder. I'm pretty stoked.
My main filming setting is C Log. The one thing that I try to focus on the most is my white balance and exposure. There’s times where I’ve messed up the white balance and it ruined my whole shot. Although shooting in C Log does give some room for error so even if I don’t get it exactly right in camera, I can fix it in post.
I can vouch that C100 footage upscaled to 4K looks like 4K, but a little bit softer. There are no artifacts, no jagged edges, no stair steps. It looks amazing. Make sure you DON'T sharpen it before upscaling. Sharpen it AFTER upscaling! (Put your entire final sequence in a new sequence, make that sequence 4K, then add sharpening).
Thanks for the tip. I agree the footage looks super sharp at 1080 and still great at 4K. I think it has a perfect blend of being sharp and soft at the same time if that makes sense.
@@nitestrykerx01 Actually, it will if your medium is RUclips. RUclips uses higher bitrate for 4K videos, but if they have roughly the same level of detail as a 1080p video, you'll actually get better quality from the upscaled video, as more bandwidth is used and less detail is getting removed.
Yes I did. Check your settings and see if you’re using the log or wide dynamic range profile. If so, once you start to grade the footage the clarity should pop. Those 2 profiles give a washed out dull looking image.
Youre probably like me, where i didnt finish setting up the camera profile. Go to your side buttons and search for the cinema profile. For starters and great result straight from the camera, you can use EOS standard profile 🎉
For me - I agree with others that "Wide DR" is great on the C100. When paired with capable glass and PLENTY OF LIGHT (this is key) you'll love the image.
Yes. I used the c log profile. As for lenses I use a mix. I really love to pair it with my canon 35mm f2 and my 50mm f1.8. But I also like to use my vintage canon fd 50mm 1.8
I've been using the C100 for 2 years with my college and we all really hate the footage we get, it's choppy and blocky, any recommendations for lenses or settings cause it's driving us mad
I’m not sure why that’s happening. I usually shoot at 24fps and I don’t really run into any problems. The only thing I could think is maybe your sd cards but in all honesty I’m not sure.
I am seeing one of these with the dual pixel focus for 400. I am tempted between this and a GH5. I already have a 5dmk4 with selection of lenses. I primarily want something more video focused to help my partner build an online course for horses training that will require some low light videos. I think the 5dmk4 can handle that and the c100 could do the rest mainly talking head videos and outdoor work on a tripod. Thank you for the video.
That's a great pice to pick it up for. At that price point you won't be disappointed. Also for the set up that you're putting together that would work out perfect.
Been using rebel series for a while now am looking into an upgrade to cinema camera... for documentaries, interviews and church sermons and music videos. I feel like leaning towards c100 mk 1, or any other recommendations will do 😅
The great thing about this camera is that you can get everything you need right out the box for a great price. Meaning you have great video quality, excellent audio quality, internal ND filters and other pro features all in one package so you don’t have to piece a bunch of parts together to build out your camera. For the right price it’s a great option.

To get the cleanest image possible your subject has to be really well lit. Also nailing the white balance is going to play a big role….with that being said, I actually like the grain I get on this camera. I’ll use another camera if I want something really clean. When it comes to this camera i like the character of the image it produces, it kinda reminds me of film and so when I want that look, I go for this camera. Hope that helps.
